OT: Horns back in the Top 10 thanks to Jay Norvell...

This is one thing we can agree on JM. And let's hope that Bob can hire a WR coach (or two) that can actually develop these kids and turn them into the players they should have been all along.

Recruited. That's the key word...he recruited them.
Yes, recruiting is a big part of Jay Norvell's job. Just ask Tim Kish...ooops.

Developing 3 of the 4 WRs with the most receptions at OU was also a huge success of Jay Norvell's development.

Are you going to argue against that stat fact as well? It didn't happen? Then why are the horns boasting such stat fact on twitter? Horns know more about Jay Norvell's success at OU than OU fans? Perhaps, more so than some.

You are making your case by what Horn fans are bragging about?? Are you serious??

And maybe the reason Norvell has 3 of the 4 top receivers at OU, is because OU generally relied on a lone WR to carry the offense while he was at OU. Prior to Norvell getting to OU, we had plenty of depth at the position and was able to spread the ball around to more than just one.

If Norvell was such a success story, then why did OUs passing game completely bomb once Shepard got hurt?? All that 4-star WR talent on the sidelines, yet Shepard was the only guy who could consistently make plays.

Because Trevor Knight threw for 56% passing in 2014, literally 5 for Pick Sixes.

Total INTs in 2014 was 17 by all QBs, yes 17 INTs.

Regardless...

Who did Bama rely on to carry their WRs throughout the year in 2014?

Amari Cooper says hello!

Instant Analysis 101...

Bama:

1) Amari Cooper = 124 receptions for 1,700 yards.

2) DeAndrew White = 40 receptions for 520 yards

3) Christion Jones = 19 receptions for 260 yards.

Earth to Sooners: Blake Sims threw for 65% in 2014.

OU:

1) An injured Sterling Shepard = 51 receptions for 970 yards, 69 receptions less receptions than Amari Cooper.

2) Durron Neal = 42 receptions for 513 yards as second man, 7 yards less than Bama's second man.

3) An injured Michiah Quick = 25 receptions for 237 yards, he sat out with a pulled groin for four games.

Earth to Sooners: Trevor Knight threw for 56% in 2014.

I guess you need to tell Nick Saban that his WR coach is doing an abysmal job with his WRs because his numbers almost mirror that of Jay Norvell even though Jay had two WRs injured on the year.

Bama simply threw the darn ball too much to Amari Cooper.
laugh.r191677.gif

What wasn't even close to being mirrored was Bama's QB at 65%, while OU's QB was at 56%.

Difference of 10%...

I truly understand why Bob chose to revert to Maximus Perine to carry the load as the QB passing % demanded it.

I'm sure Top 10 program HC Charlie Strong looked at the 2014 numbers and said, "Jay you're hired".

I'm sure Jay responded, "I'll head to Austin, only if you find a QB that can throw for 65%".

Meanwhile, the pride of mountain west - Utah State came calling for...

Both are impact recruits.

Hopefully, Dominique Reeds choses OU or Arkansas.

I have no clue about Demarkus Lodge's recruitment as OU was never in the race for his services.

Some say Ole Miss has an outside chance?
Ole Miss is probably the favorite but Murray could be the difference. If we don't get Murray, we probably don't get Lodge. Murray, Lodge, Mack and Soso had talked about playing together at one time. Texas is the only school they have in common

IMO,Bob Stoops fired Jay Norvell because he had lost confidence in Jay's ability to coach/develop the WRs that had been recruited and Jay's involvement in the disappointing offensive performances over the last two years. I doubt the demotion factor had much if anything to do with his decision. I've demoted a lot of people over my years and never has one quit over it because they knew they weren't doing the job and knew if I didn't want them to stay I would have fired them instead of demoting them. It's how you go about explaining the issues. I suspect Bob just felt that he could replace Jay with a better WR coach. If so, and think it is, Jay wasn't doing a good enough job as a position coach, in Bob's opinion, or he certainly wouldn't have let him go. That would be a cutting your nose off to spite your face kind of deal. "Oh, Jay your are a great WR coach, but I'm going to fire you because of your failure as a Co-OC. I know that's kind of a shit thing to do and you are a personal friend, but I don't it to reflect badly on Josh." If that was the deal, what does that say about Bob? Well, I don't buy into the demotion theory whatsoever. Bob thinks he has an opportunity to bring in someone that can do a better job. Jay didn't say "Fire me rather demote me". Everything I've posted is only my opinion, but looking at from a business respective and I think Bob did as well.

This is the first season under Saban that a single WR has had such a lopsided amount of receptions, and Alabama actually develops the WRs they recruit out of high school instead of getting JUCO transfers. Sure OU distributed the ball well in the last handful of years, but that was when they were able to recruit in transfers to make up for Norvell not developing the high school talent he recruited. Alabama over the years under Saban has always spread the ball out well to all their WRs. And Cooper was invited to NYC for the Heisman Trophy right?? How many WRs has Norvell had invited to NYC?? The fact Cooper was a Heisman finalist explains why Alabama leaned on him so heavily during the season since the guy was an incredible playmaker. Why wouldn't Alabama take advantage of how good he was and keep throwing him the ball?? It was the same as when Broyles made 131 catches in 2010, which was fine and dandy since he stayed healthy that year. But I'm willing to bet Alabama would have had WRs step up and make plays if Cooper had been lost with an injury.

And yes....Bob went to Maximus Perine to carry the load after Shepard was lost since it was clearly evident that none of Norvell's highly touted WR talent was able to make plays consistently. You didn't see Shepard complaining about the QB passing % since oddly enough he was able to make plays, while the rest of the WRs on the roster weren't able to. That speaks volumes!!

Jay Norvell's numbers tell all. Anyone with an analytical bone in their body can see that, and those that can't don't have receiving stats to prove otherwise. Their arguments are Jay Norvell had to recruit JUCOs and Transfers in to help the WR corp, and they walked on campus developed ready to go. We'll if that's the case, then Jay Norvell should get a plug and play award as he sure did a fine job recruiting top flight plug and play talents when necessary.

Taking that argument into consideration, nobody gets credit for bringing in JUCO Heupel at QB as he was a plug and play guy as well.
laugh.r191677.gif

At least the HC of the horns and the HC of the Badgers could see Jay Norvell's talent within 48 hours.

Regardless...

Bob did right. Co-OC is a title with a pay scale.

Bob would never expect Norvell to accept a demotion in title and pay with any true integrity, so you move on.

It happens. Give the new sole OC a chance to command the team as a sole OC.

I can only recommend that you give Strong and Chryst a call to get their reasons for jumping on Norvell within 48 hours of his release. Perhaps they can guide you through the analytics and stats they reviewed on Jay Norvell's success.

I totally get it, so Strong, Chryst and I are good to go.

There is a reason Heupel is coaching in a mountain west conference now.

Good morning, Billy. I agree with you. It will be interesting to see how Bama's offense changes this year while breaking in a new QB and new receivers so to speak. I suspect all of Bama's foes will see a lot more of that big back they have.....#27, Derrick Henry.

So, you are on the record as not agreeing with Strong hiring Jay Norvell or Chryst trying to hire Jay Norvell because he couldn't develop WRs at OU, causing Trevor Knight to throw for 56%?

Time will tell as this will unfold before your eyes soon enough.

I going to stop defending the obvious as Jay Norvell is sitting pretty nice in Austin working that LHN, while earning serious coin at a very high profile gig.

Charlie Strong on Jay Norvell:

"Jay is a guy that has always had an outstanding reputation, and when I had a chance to talk to him, what impressed me the most was his energy, passion and drive to be successful," Strong said. "The thing you see and everyone talks about with him is that he's a great teacher, very detailed and organized, and he really develops his players. He's coached so many great players, gets the most out of his guys, and they really like playing for him. He brings a lot to our staff, is very familiar with the Big 12 and has experience recruiting in Texas. We're really excited he's joining us."[/B]

I am sure Norvell will do some good at Texas, however, we needed change and so did he. By the way, where and when will Bob hire a WE coach?

True, I agree.

I can only make the assumption that OU will hire WSU's WR coach, Dennis Simmons, but don't want to hurt Mike Leach's late efforts with recruiting. I would find it difficult that Bob Stoops is having a difficult time hiring somebody.

OU only needs one addition to the class and that's not critical in itself.

The WR depth chart on campus is LOADED!

The new WR coach is going to be thrilled to work with this group imho.

It sticks out for a bit, until I come to the realization that 56% didn't seem to affect Shepard all that much. Maybe the lackluster completion % was partly a result of a poorly developed WR group. But I can understand how in your mind a poor completion % must be all the fault of the QB and the WRs have nothing to do with it.........

So ya...sorry that I can't help you see the obvious lackluster job that Norvell did while he was at OU. You like to look at a few WRs that did well in 8 years, and ignore the huge number of highly touted busts that occurred under his watch.

And what does Heupel have to do with anything? Talk about needing help with this discussion. You do realize that Norvell was Co-OC, WR coach, and passing game coordinator, yet when Shepard was lost the passing game became a joke. Sorry, but that falls on Norvells shoulders. No amount of your stats and numbers and funny pics will change that.

This sounds like any other canned speech that a coach makes after making a hire. Bob prolly sounded very close to this after he hired Bruce Kittle, Patton, Kish and his brother Mike back. Cuz ya...those hires have worked out great for Bob...regardless of how much he tried to talk them up after they were hired......

No reflection on you JMIS, but I don't give a damn about Charlie Strong and what he thinks. I stand by the post I made earlier this morning, i.e., Bob fired a coach because he thinks he can find someone better. IMO, if Bob had wanted to save Jay, he could have convinced Jay to stay on as the WR coach only. That's what he ended up being anyway except not for Bob Stoops. If Bob hires Bill Blankenship as WR coach, don't you think he will tout what a great coach it is? Of course he will.

Jay Norvell was NEVER going to take a paycut and a demotion at OU.

That's silly and a slap in the face, when a new OC comes onboard.

Would you accept that in your employment? I would hope you had options elsewhere.

Jay Norvell obviously had major options within 48 hours. A position coach in Austin is a HUGE gig on a national stage.

If Norvell makes noise there, he will be recognized and compensated greater for it monetarily in Austin than at OU as a position coach. The horns have tremendously deep pockets and Austin is a paradise scenario to live in for Jay Norvell. Something tells me he's grinning ear to ear in Austin right now as it is a great job.

I trust Charlie Strong knows what he's getting in Jay Norvell over our judgements any time.

He's coached so many great players, gets the most out of his guys, and they really like playing for him. He brings a lot to our staff, is very familiar with the Big 12 and has experience recruiting in Texas. We're really excited he's joining us."[/B]

Sure, poor old Charlie Strong just didn't have the resources in Austin to hire a true WR position coach.

You do know the horn's AD budget is around $165M

The LHN with the football program earns $109M annually, while OU football turnkey earns $85M.

How many coaches recently fired from OU have received interviews from Texas or any Top 10 or even a Top 25 program?

Josh Heupel? Nope.
James Patton? Nope.
Bruce Kittle? Nope.

Jay Norvell? Yep. (Texas and Wisconsin within 48 hours)

Even Charlie Weiss got another shot at running a college program after that disaster we all saw unfold up at Notre Dame. Lane Kiffin took a "demotion" after leaving USC and going to Alabama as a coordinator. Josh Heupel got another job after he got fired with Norvell.

That's how coaching circles work JM. Just because things don't work out for a coach at one spot, doesn't mean the entire coaching community turns their back on them. They move onto another job.

If Norvell is a success at UT, then good for him. But his time at OU sucked.

Okay, JMIS. IF you need to win, I declare you the winner. No need to for me to continue to repeat what I have already posted. Three is my limit, so I will move on. I see where this is headed. Every time one of the Texas WRs has a good day, the Sooner Nation will hear about it.

My point still stands. Coaches move on from job to job. Just because Norvell was hired by another program doesn't diminish the lackluster job he did while at OU.

And I"m the one smiling ear to ear....I started making mention of Norvells failures earlier this year when it all became obvious, and my thinking was vindicated when he was fired. So now OU can look towards the future and hire a WR coach that can actually develop some depth, and not just develop one WR at a time with a roster full of stud talent.

Several things have been clearly shown in this thread.....JM thinks very highly of Norvell as a UT coach, JM thinks very highly of Charlie Strong, JM thinks very highly of the UT football program, JM thinks very highly of what Horn fans tweet about, and JM is excited at the prospect of Norvell succeeding while wearing burnt orange to teach us OU fans a lesson about how wrong we are.

For the love of god JM...I really think you would be happier if you just ponied up and became a Horn fan.....

Well BR...I chuckled for sure!

The following WR's are credited by Rivals as having been recruited by Jay Norvell to OU by year:

2008 - DeJuan Miller 4* - complete and absolute bust. Never developed the ability to run routes or catch the football. The ball would be at his knees and he would jump up in the air. After Norvell was fired he took to twitter stating Norvell had favorites on the squad and never did anything to assist in his development.

2009 - Jaz Reynolds 3* - discussed ad nauseum in this thread. Mental midget. Bust.

2010 - Trey Franks 3* - liked the weed more than football. When he was on the field he fell down. A lot. Monumental bust.
Justin McCay 4* - transferred home to KU as he had a family member that was ill. Never did anything at OU or KU.
Joe Powell 3* - such a bust at WR he transferred to DB until he was busted taking possession of a brick of weed via Fed Ex. Monumentally busted.
Kenny Stills 4* - part of the Cali trio. The fact that so many people are surprised at how well he has done in the NFL should tell you what NFL execs thought of him coming out of OU. My favorite memory of Stills is him ear holing the UT DB who was chasing DD Williams on the 95 yarder. Good times.

2011 - Kameel Jackson 4* - never played a down at OU. Bust.
Trey Metoyer 5* - didn't qualify out of HS. Liked to expose himself (arrested twice) on campus. Yikes.

2012 - LaColton Bester 3* JUCO - If not for the Sugar Bowl in 2014 Bester becomes "who was that guy who they called Scooba?"
Durron Neal 4* - the #62 player in the country in 2012. Development? Played as a frosh in '12, a soph in '13 and caught his FIRST TD as a Sooner as a junior in 2014. Please. My wife hates football and she would have turned this guy into an all conference player by now. Good. Googly. Moogly.
Sterling Shepard 4* - recruited by Stoops since he was 5. Never going anywhere but OU. A phenomenal player.
Derrick Woods 4* - Rivals Top 250 kid out of Cali. One memorable catch in 3 years. Thrown off team for stealing shoes from the locker room. Bust, bust, BUST.

2013 - Austin Bennett 3* - 1 catch in 13 games played this year. WOOOEEEE.
Danon Cavil 3* - He gone.
Jordan Smallwood 3* - 3 catches in 13 games played this year. If it weren't for having to catch the football this guy would be all world.

2014 - Jeffrey Mead 3* - No stats this year. Didn't play.
Carson Meir 3* - TE which OU currently doesn't use. Touted to be a good one though. (Like all the guys listed above).
Dallis Todd 4* - Worlds of talent. Jury has yet to be seated.

So, OP - talk to me about his awesome recruiting abilities and how he develops WR's. You keep spouting the 56% nonsense. That was one year homes. How about the lack of development for all the players he recruited prior to this year?

He didn't recruit Saunders, Saunders sought out OU. He didn't recruit Brown, Stoops did after the PSU debacle.

Tell me another story about the greatness of Jay Norvell. I like fairy tales.

wow jaaa ouch lol. Very impressive and perhaps this will stop all this "Norvell is great" nonsense

Jaaa, also don't forget 4-star Jameel Owens recruited in 2008, who ended up transferring to Tulsa after I think one season right?? I remember at the time him saying that after the season he realized OU isn't the right place for him, and how being at OU wasn't' working out for him. Sounds like he saw a little of what DMiller saw in that playing for Norvell wasn't really all he thought it was going to be.

This post was edited on 1/27 3:31 PM by BillyRay

Jameel's lead recruiter was Jackie Shipp who also recruited his teammate Stacey McGee. In '08 Jackie had primary responsibility for the state of Oklahoma.

Norvell was NOT the lead recruiter on every WR OU signed during his tenure. KJ Young was primarily recruited by Tim Kish.

Mark Andrews last year was primarily recruited by Tim Kish.

I only listed those guys for whom Jay was the lead.

FAIR AND BALANCED. Makes your post even more impressive! However, regardless of the lead recruiter it was Jay's job to coach them up. I've heard coaches say that it is a group effort to recruit a kid and whomever gets credit for the commitment doesn't mean he was the reason a kid signs.

Ahhh gotcha. I didn't know that. Thanks for the info Jaaa. But even though Norvell didn't recruit Owens and others, they were still his responsibility to develop once they got to campus.

Oh Snap! Game, set, and match.

Quick doesn't have a lead recruiter listed by Rivals. I know both Kish and Chip Viney were involved in his recruitment. It may well have been Norvell.

I'm willing to think that Bob Stoops said the same thing or very close to it and praised Norvell the day he hired him. I think Strong hired him for his experience of recruiting Texas mores than anything.

Pretty much right on there Jaaa. Hard to believe he keeps using Jaz Reynolds as an example of how Norvell was some great coaching mind. Honestly, I think I could have tackled Trey Franks at least 5 out of 10 times. Just touch one of his feet and he fell flat on his face.

OU coaches that do lackluster jobs elsewhere NEVER get hired in Austin.

Just ask Josh Heupel, Bruce Kittle, James Patton and Jackie Shipp.

Some could credibly make the argument that a WR position coach at Texas is a higher profile job with more pay and city life than a WR position coach at OU. Just ask Barry Switzer what he thinks of the HC job in Austin. You'll puke orange.

But, you know more than Strong, Switzer, Chryst, so no worries.

You're talking about a program that kept an underachieving Mack Brown as their head coach for as many years as they did.

Ya...good call there JM......

It really is amazing that you are trying to make a case for Norvell having done a great job at OU just because he got hired at Texas, as if it means anything. I noticed you haven't even attempted to debate Jaaa's list of complete busts Norvell had while at OU.
