Update on four-star TE Nate Roberts (Tue 6:00pm)

This is down to four schools, but at this point, I think it comes down to just two. Roberts will take OV's to Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State, but it seems the Sooners and Buckeyes are a step ahead of the pack here.

I sat down with Roberts today and he acknowledged to me that the race is close between all four schools, and that when the time comes for his official visits, he'll probably find himself wanting to commit to all four. That said, I get the sense Penn State has some ground to make up on the other three, and although Oregon isn't out of the race by any means, I do think the distance factor will be prohibitive. Roberts admitted that his family's travel up to Eugene has been arduous the last couple of times they've visited. The Buckeyes continue to push very hard for Roberts' services, and new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has already struck up a strong bond with the blue-chip Washington (Okla.) tight end. Meanwhile, Roberts' older brother Jake is very much enjoying his time at OU thus far, and Joe Jon Finley and Seth Littrell have kept up their concerted pursuit of Nate.

Roberts will be at Oregon's spring game on April 13th, Oklahoma's spring game on the 20th and the Ohio State spring game on the 27th (I may have those Oregon and tOSU dates flipped, but I think that's correct). He said he expects to commit shortly after his official visit slate is wrapped up, but one way or another, I don't feel that this thing is going to be all the way over until pen meets paper. Much could depend on how much (and how well) his finalists use the tight end this fall, and for better or worse, that could cause him to re-evaluate his decision. So regardless of where Roberts commits, I wouldn't necessarily consider the process to be a wrap when he does so. In short, there is long-term flip potential for Oklahoma if he goes elsewhere, but there's also long-term flip potential for the other finalists if he ends up picking the Sooners.

As for where Oklahoma stands in relation to the other programs in the mix (particularly Ohio State), I think the Sooners are in a good spot but not a great spot. There's still a lot of work to be done here, even with Jake on board the proverbial schooner. And in the end, I don't think Oklahoma is going to bend over backwards to get Roberts in the class. They will recruit him as diligently as any other blue-chip prospect, but as one source put it to me today, "OU's not coddling him." If he wants to stay home and be a Sooner, they'll welcome him with open arms, but if not, they'll move along and turn up the heat on DaSaahn Brame and/or Chase Loftin (it goes without saying that Linkon Cure is a major priority regardless of what happens with Roberts).

I give the slight edge to Ohio State as of now, but it's not enough of an edge that I'd bail on my FutureCast just yet. The Buckeyes are emphasizing to Roberts that the Big Ten is the tight end's league, and some may recall that they successfully deployed a similar pitch (i.e., the Big Ten is the linebacker's league) to get Payton Pierce on board last cycle. It's a pitch to which Roberts has been receptive thus far. So the Buckeyes will likely be the largest thorn in Oklahoma's side until the process winds to a conclusion.

Much more interesting than we all figured it'd be six months ago. But hey, that's recruiting, right?

Patty Gasso aiming to 'amp up' intensity ahead of Mary Nutter Classic

While the Sooners are 9-0, OU coach Patty Gasso is looking for OU to push past its 'average' start to the season.

Moser to DePaul - Kellen Sampson to OU at Season’s end

Finally a reprieve from the Moser misery, this dude has just been the worst OU basketball coach since the Vietnam War. It will be nice to have a young coach, who at least understands the soil in a power 5 conference. Kellen loves OU, great fit, and if you fail with him, at lest you fail with a young guy, who is an OU guy through and through. Moser had no NCAA tourney teams in 3 years, shit, Vermont makes the NCAA tourney every 3-4 years. Gets Moser back to a mid major where he can coach against Emory-Riddle and Chicago State.

DrummBeat: Peach State four-star returning to Norman soon?

Spoke briefly with four-star DE Isaiah Gibson last week, who also was at the Sooners’ JR Day a few weeks ago.

First and foremost, Gibson has built a strong relationship with Sooners’ DE coach Miguel Chavis. The four-star edge rusher spoke about Chavis, saying, “He is my guy and he’s so energetic,” Gibson said of Chavis. “We have connected and started to build a real good relationship.”

Naturally, Coach Chavis and the Sooners seem to be a quiet team, but one people should at least watch for with Gibson at this point.

As for his trip to Oklahoma, Gibson said he enjoyed his visit to Norman, and the Sooners’ JR Day, and called that visit, “Smooth,” while adding, “That visit went smooth and I would call it a success,” the four-star said. “The staff was awesome and they stood out to me.

When I asked if the visit went well enough for Gibson to return, he said, “I don’t have a date to return set I stone just yet, but I plan on returning to OU soon.”

Obviously, that’s great to hear for Sooners fans hoping that OU can pull the Rivals250 DE out of the Peach State, but that won’t be easy. As of now, in-state Georgia is, naturally, the team I would watch for most along with Clemson, South Carolina and Oregon.

My Take: This is one that surprised myself and Parker to begin with when we were gathering the list for the Sooners’ Elite JR Day, in early February. And it goes without saying, that Gibson making the trek to Norman shows how well DE coach Miguel Chavis and the defensive staff have been working Gibson on the recruiting trail.

That said, getting the four-star DE up for an unofficial visit and getting Gibson to commit — or at the very least take an official visit — are different things in the big picture of it all.

So for now, Gibson will be someone we watch and check back in with over the spring — along with seeing in person at Rivals Camp in Atlanta — so more updates will be coming. Even with that, I wouldn’t hold my breath too much on the Sooners’ chances with Gibson just yet.

Now, if that official visit, or even a return on his own dime, takes place I would then start to pay closer attention to the four-star DE. Until then, we will monitor and let you know when we have more info on the OU and Rivals 250 DE target out of the Peach State.

Many people were off on MIZZOU last year.

Can we have a conversation about MIZZOU? I feel as if this site and others were very low on MIZZOU coming into last season. People talked about Drinkwitz being on hot seat and it being hard to see MIZZOU winning more than five games. I could've sworn they had a lot of upper class men last year that they'd lose but I just saw a graphic saying they have the most returning offensive production in SEC.

Add in they come into our backyard and steal one of our own players. Steal maybe a top three target of ours in Williams Waneri.

Obviously they had a fantastic season. Im just wondering how and why everyone was so off on them? Now it seems as if we might go into Columbus next year and get beat. Any thoughts on this from anyone else?

Hoops: Team and Injury notes (Tue 3:15pm)

- I've had the opportunity to connect with several sources since my initial report on John Hugley. These sources have confirmed the nature of the injury. Additionally, it has been indicated that Hugley's injury will likely require surgery at some point. However, there is a possibility that Hugley might choose to tough it out and delay the surgery until after the season. As of now, it would be surprising to see him on the court anytime soon. I will provide updates as more information becomes available.

- It was encouraging to see Rivaldo Soares going through warmups on Saturday, even though it became apparent he could not play. The upcoming bye week becomes crucial in this context. If Oklahoma was to have a mid-week game, the likelihood of Soares being able to participate would be low. However, with a week off, those chances increase. If Soares can reach around 80%, I believe he will give it a go. The nature of the game, being a must-win for the Sooners, enhances the likelihood of Soares playing. Designating Soares as "Probable" for the upcoming game is reasonable. If all progresses positively, he will take the court, albeit possibly not at full strength.

- Many have been asking, "Why is Kaden Cooper not playing?" I was among those advocating for his inclusion after the second conference game. However, upon delving deeper into the reasons behind his absence from the court, it appears safe to say that he is probably not ready yet. This is not a critique of Cooper; most true freshmen typically face challenges adjusting to the competitiveness of the Big 12. While Cooper may have been highly rated, that doesn't necessarily translate to immediate readiness for play as a true freshman. In comparison, Maks Klanjscek brings considerable experience, albeit not at this level, but it surpasses Cooper's current level. Although Cooper possesses exceptional athleticism, he does not match Klanjscek in shooting ability. At this point, I wouldn't expect Cooper to provide any valuable minutes this season.

Softball Top 25 Poll: Sooners still No. 1, Texas lurking at No. 2

Oklahoma and Texas are No. 1 and No. 2 in this week's Top 25 poll, but the SEC's show of power is even more impressive.
Counting the Longhorns and Sooners, the SEC would have 14 of 25 teams currently ranked.

Starting Lineup vs. Nebraska

1. John Spikerman CF
2. Bryce Madron RF
3. Easton Carmichael C
4. Michael Snyder 3B
5. Rocco Garza-Gongora 1B
6. Kendall Pettis LF
7. Jaxon Willits 2B
8. Isaiah Lane 2B
9. Jason Walk DH
Starting Pitcher: Jamie Hitt

You may be unfamiliar with the names Isaiah Lane and Jason Walk. They are two players that you should get to know very quickly. Lane is a very highly touted true freshman from California. Walk was a highly recruited kid out of Georgia. He is a presence on the base paths. He is the fastest player on the team and it's a treat to watch him run.

Lake Charles, LA

On a competing POD …. a question was raised “what kind of town is Lake Charles Louisiana ..??

Headed down now for the softball tournament..

I believe I can sum it up with an anecdotal story/comparison……

I served… back in the day with a Frogman (Scott Bepler) who played Linebacker for the Massilllon Ohio Tigers….

In Massillon ….. the Booster Club delivers a tiny Tiger Football to all new-born boys, while the girls receive a tiny set of Massillon Tigers Pom-Poms….

In Lake Charles (a refinery town)…… All new born baby boys receive a pack of Marlboro Reds….. while the baby girls are gifted their first pack of Marlboro Light 100’s ……

True story.

4-Piece Nuggets: Dead period updates on several OU targets

— Four-star CB Cobey Sellers released his top six schools today, and tells me that he currently doesn’t have any set-in-stone visit plans for spring ball. That’s a good sign for Oklahoma, as the longer this recruitment drags out, the longer the other five finalists have to close the Sooners’ lead. The absence of any concrete visit plans bodes well for the status quo in any recruitment, and the status quo favors OU. I like my FutureCast here, and the expectation within the Switzer Center is still that the Sooners will get Sellers on board relatively soon. There’s a general consensus among sources that the spring game is a ballpark timeline.

— I mentioned in an update last month that Alabama could be a major player for Christian Jones depending on the composition of Kalen DeBoer’s new staff. Former Washington assistant William Inge was one of the staffers that made the move from Seattle to Tuscaloosa, and Jones’ strongest relationship is with Inge. We haven’t seen a Bama offer go out yet, but if that offer does come, I expect the Crimson Tide to jump to the front of the pack pretty immediately. Don’t get it twisted: the Sooners are in good shape, but there’s work to be done.

— Officially faded my FutureCast to Oklahoma for Gus Cordova, which is a bit overdue. I don’t see things heating back up between him and Oklahoma, especially given the off-field circumstances at Lake Travis that have made waves nationally. OU was kind of always the dream for Cordova, but the Sooners weren’t ready to take his commitment last fall and the plan had been for him to take a few more visits and commit this summer. Initially, the Sooners had remained in touch with him even after the locker-room fiasco in which Cordova was a prominent character, but it seems they eventually decided it wasn’t worth the PR scrutiny. It hasn’t stopped him from racking up 40 total scholarship offers… but Oklahoma appears content to let another school deal with the inevitable blow-back that will come with Cordova’s pledge.

— I mentioned Amarion Jackson in a note last week as a potential offer guy for Oklahoma down the line, and he’s now earned an invite to the Sooners’ Future Freaks event on March 9. Also in attendance will be Lawton (Okla.) MacArthur WR Joshua Rushing. Both of these wideouts could be early pledges to OU if they end up earning offers, as both of them grew up rooting for the Sooners. The question is whether Emmett Jones will pull the trigger on one or both, as he’s already in great standing with several 2026 wideouts (including Legend Bey, Mason James and Brock Boyd). That said, Jones has shown a willingness to err on the side of offering too many prospects as opposed to too few. So these are two names that I would file away, and whose recruitments we’ll likely revisit next month after they visit.
