Trying not to Overreact and be emotional…BUT

This might be a 3-4 win football team. Offense is beyond dysfunctional. Just no momentum or rhythm whatsoever. They don’t do a single thing well, with the exception of some RPO and Burks playmaking ability. With that being said, the RPO is rendered useless without any actual threat of run or movement from the OL at the LOS. A few other thoughts:

1. Getting flashbacks to 2022 with the defense not being properly aligned and set as the ball is snapped. Got beat on the 3rd and 1 quick snap QB sneak because we weren’t set. On the coverage bust we had (2) DBs on the opposite side yelling at each other as the ball was snapped (while being out of alignment). It’s year 3, no excuse for not getting the call in and properly aligned. Lost count how many times our guys weren’t set and reading keys before the ball was snapped tonight.

2. More on the offense: there is no movement or running lanes between tackles in the zone run game. Thought Febechi and Sexton would at least get some push in the run game…they do not. I stand by the notion that Tarquin is not a starting T in the SEC, just not athletic enough and can’t get his hat on quicker DEs/LBs.

3. We miss Farooq, Anderson, and Gibson…not just because of pass catching. Without those guys we have no blocking outside the numbers. Can’t run jet, swings, screens, outside toss, etc with Thompson and the undersized freshmen at WR. Hester also whiffed multiple times on perimeter run blocks that resulted in blown up plays.

4. Some of the soft zone coverage schemes and delayed blitzes in this defense continue to drive me insane. I get BVs defense is predicated on different looks and pressures to cause negative plays, but the constant zone coverage busts are frustrating.

5. Do I think play calling was great tonight? Of course not. With that being said, it’s hard to call much of anything that will be effective with a terrible OL and undersized WRs who can’t create separation. Add in an inexperienced QB who doesn’t trust his line, and we have a mess of a passing game.

6. The stupid undisciplined penalties by Dolby and Bates should be addressed in a major way. Almost cost OU the game…the margin for error is not there for idiotic, ego-driven penalties.

7. Every struggling team’s favorite player is the backup QB (remember Rattler behind Hurts? Caleb behind Rattler? JA behind DG?). However, I do wonder if Hawk’s legs give you a better chance to win with this OL. Maybe moving to the Jalen Hurts 2019 zone read offense is the approach moving forward?

8. I know we are only two games in, but personally I’d rather just concede and play the young pups on the OL. Take your lumps and hope that late in the season they start to make progress heading into 2025. BB has worked some wonders in the past, but this group (even with Hatchett, Everett, Hickman) is beyond a long shot. I just don’t see the talent there with these older guys.

In closing, forget TN and Auburn…. Tulane is going to be a major challenge next week. This might be a long, long season.

Upon Rewatching the OL

- Tarquin is going to have a tough time dealing with any edge rusher who plays with speed.

- Nwaiwu needs to stay right where he is at. I like his play and he’s got some nasty to him.

- Hatchett doesn’t have the athleticism to stay in front of the more athletic interior players. Some of the slowest feet I’ve seen at OU by a center.

- Sexton has some juice to him but would love to see him finish stronger sometimes. That being said, he’s got the athletic talent needed to dawg out at that spot.

- Brown wasn’t incredibly bad when he got down hill but between him and tarquin trying to bookend the OL in the SEC.. 😬

Bill Bedenbaugh vs. Emmet Jones

For all those people that get on Bedenbaugh, how can you not get on Emmet Jones? People say BB hasn’t been recruiting well lately. IMO, this year has been great. That he lives on transfers. My question is where are EJ’s guys? We are desperate for anybody right now and none of his 4 guys sniff the field besides 81 who has shown nothing.

At least BB has skins on the wall.

I'm questioning EJ's evaluation skills already. Our WR's are burks(transfer) and anderson(not his recruit). We need guys that can stretch the field and none of his guys have done anything against lower level teams.

Boiled down: lazy hiring = no running back

( I have said this many times before but here you go)
Because we don't have a running back who is athletic and physical - just one would be a start - we can't run the ball. This allows defenses to play a soft zone and limit big plays. This is also why no one is open. Of course, some will blame the offensive line and JA, but we couldn't run it last year either. We have a talent gap at running back and our coach who supposed to be a great recruiter, is not, and just breaks the rules. Cale Gundy gave us future pro backs, but Demarco is giving us backs who couldn't start anywhere else. This is the worst running back room in history. We need to quit hiring former players as our coaches and hire the best coaches in the country. Lazy hiring is hurting our team.

Early Baker vs Jackson

I wish I could go back and look at the comments BEFORE the last quarter and a half of the Tennessee game that made Baker become BFM. I have no idea how the comments went, but I've been here since 2001 and I think there were probably some huge detractors about him. I'm not saying Arnold will be Mayfield; I'm just curious how the two periods of time compare regarding message board content.

The morning after

Rewatching the game right now and ....... it's pretty bad. The offense top to bottom just doesn't have it, they don't have anything going for them right now. QB, RB, WR, OL, none of these units are worth anything right now. The only guy that's showed up so far is Burks.

Arnold- missed throws and got anxious in the pocket. He scrambled when it was unnecessary.
OL- pass blocking was better but still a work in progress. I thought Bates did a better job than Hatchett. But it's the same story the last few years and it's gotten gradually worse but the OL can't run block to start the year. They simply aren't creating enough space to run.
WR- They need someone to step up besides Burks and to get healthy.
RB- Barnes and Sawchuk disappoint yet again. Barnes just runs into the OL backs for no reason. I wish Hicks and Tatum would get more reps just to see what they can do since Barnes and Sawchuk aren't producing.

The playcalling overall has been boring and plain. It's either RPO or play action pass. I also don't get putting Ragins out there with Thompson and Burks, get a bigger body receiver in there to have some diversity. Most of all, OU needs to get better on 3rd down. Let's see if the coaches and players can figure it out. Hard to be optimistic and positive about the offense right now.

Just noticed this about Arnold

Right now he's only seeing one side of the field. Jackson would've avoided a sack and pressure multiple times if he would simply move left in the pocket. He missed Burks last week for a possible touchdown up the left hash and for an easy first down last night. The worst one was during the offside penalty in the 4th, Jackson just threw it up and it was intercepted but he had Thompson for an EASY touchdown. The CB stood up thinking the play was gonna be called dead and Thompson had him beat BAD.
Arnold has got to start seeing the left side of the field or else he's going to to make it too easy for defenses.
