WOKElahoma - November 9, 2022

*Alright, so the day has finally come and gone and the Sooners are now without Colton Vasek.

So where are the next moves?

There are several options that the Sooners have expressed some interest in...

And obviously the Sooners have made offers for players like Markus Strong and Jordan Allen in recent weeks though Strong feels much more like a three-technique than a pure defensive end.

Allen becomes more interesting because initially he felt like a Joe Jon Finley offer at tight end but as I was told at the time 'he's a football player' and the Sooners seem to be warming to the possibility of him as a defensive end. But can they sway him from the Kansas State commitment?

I also know that Bai Jobe has come up a bit but from some conversations with well connected sources that just feels very unlikely. He's built a strong relationship with the Michigan State staff and as a kid who didn't grow up around college football it seems like the 'prestige' angle doesn't connect with him in the same way that it might some others.

Maybe Oklahoma kicks the tire but it feels unlikely that it will come to much.

Peevy and Wein are two that have had a lot of conversation because Wein feels like the kind of guy that Brent Venables and company tend to love - the one that others aren't expecting and will surprise some people as time goes on. I legitimately like Wein on tape and keep waiting to hear of either an offer or a reason for why he doesn't have multiple power 5 offers because that reason doesn't show up on tape.

With Peevy, it's just a question of USC struggling on defense and whether or not OU staff's reputation of developing defensive lineman might appeal to him?

We'll see but there is some chatter that something could happen - even if I'm not sure I'm ready to believe.

**One of the most interesting offers of the past few weeks was the one made to South Bend, Ind. four-star defensive back Daeh McCullough.

I've spoken to a few people and it feels like the Sooners might have a chance here as there has been some expectation for a while that Notre Dame might get seriously involved, even more meaningful considering his father is an assistant coach for the Irish. But so far, the Domers have not taken that step and both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State made a run at the Cincinnati commitment in the past week.

I get the impression that McCullough's utility for multiple positions could be a big part of his appeal for the Sooners and if you're looking for an angle that is of note?

McCullough's father, who is now on the Notre Dame staff, was a staffmate of Jay Valai's while they were on the Kansas City Chiefs staff together in 2018.

Just something to keep an eye on.

***We started with Vasek talk and we'll end up with the 2023 class as a whole.

I've spoken to a few sources and the thing that I continue to be impressed by is how sturdy the majority of commitments seem to be. Now, there's no denying that the Anthony Evans public silence is concerning even to some of the commitments but with the exception of the speedy receiver 'everyone else seems very locked in'.

We'll see if that changes but if Oklahoma can finish on the field strong and have some proof of concept that things look likely to be less rocky at the close than some of you may be expecting.

BV Defense

Danny Stutsman‘s dad was on a podcast last week and mentioned that he visited Danny prior to a game and looked at the defensive playbook. He said the playbook was 62 pages which was only for that particular game. He said that the Brent Venables defense is very complex

My question is - is it too complex for kids out of high school that will be at your program for an average of 3 to 4 years?

If it’s very complex, that knocks out most freshmen from playing immediately because they won’t know the playbook. They don’t see immediate playing time until their sophomore year.

The other concerning thing is what Gabe mentioned in the podcast which is the Brent Venables defense likes to shift at the very last second and Baylor took advantage of it.

Thoughts?

Chavis’ tweets - flip incoming?

Are we about to flip David Peevy (4⭐️ DE/OLB) from USC? Here’s my conspiracy.

I know we’ve been interested in Wein, but USC offering him is interesting. We could write it off as them following what we’re doing and f***ing with us.

Orrrr, they could be preparing to lose someone. Awfully interesting that USC offered Wein, then Chavis posted that cryptic tweet, and then immediately followed that up with a retweet of a completely random 2 month old post from David Peevy’s profile.

just spitballing here…

EDIT - didn’t realize stoopsbros scooped me by a half an hour. Sue me!

Vasek Truth

Yes another Vasek thread. Don’t like it? FO.

I’ve been wanting to say this for a long time but obviously didn’t want to say it about a committed recruit.

There is a coaching rule of thumb that can be paraphrased as ‘recruiting coach’s kids can be tricky because those kids are typically coached up much more than other players and in the end closer to their ceiling than other players’. Vasek is the most technically advanced high school DE I have ever seen. He destroys his unwitting competition with high-level technical moves (spin, swim, dip&rip, etc) they are not used to seeing. Being that he is already so well coached in these techniques he is already much closer to his ceiling than the typical DE coming into college. He may very well go on to be a Hall of Famer but I can guarantee you that he is way closer already to what he will ever be than PJ or any other high school DE. He may not have that big of a jump in college where everyone is as coached up as he is. Still wish we had him. We’ll see.

Monday Morning Idiot: Baylor

Well, let's all hate everything for a little while longer, ok?

Seriously, this isn't a hard batch of 'what to watch'...

Run fits, and how were they impacted by changes in the roster. I thought things got MUCH looser on the outside once Keyshawn Lawrence left but I admit, that could be my imagination.

Is there ANYONE on the defensive line winning one on ones consistently?

How did the offensive line handle Baylor's interior defensive line? I felt like that was a surprisingly lopsided matchup (not so much JUST the interior but OU's OL vs. Baylor's DL was CLEARLY an OU win and I thought it might be a bit more of a stalemate.

Finally Gabriel's picks, how avoidable were they?

And of course, we'll see what else we come across as we go.
