Right now, everything is in flux with the coaching and conference changes.
But OU will settle into a ‘new normal’ over the next 5 years.
Ultimately, no one can predict what this will look like for the long-time OU fan.
But if we take a step back and examine the big picture a few things can be said with some certainty.
As a two time OU degree holder and a Nebraska post graduate as well; and fan of both programs and sooner born and bred, I can say that NOT recognizing these realities, while not changing the reality, adds to a lot of pain as a fan…and as an administrator-decision maker can make things worse.(see Nebraska)
1. It’s not going to EVER be like it was before for OU. The reality is it hasn’t been like it was for 30 years, even with all of Stoops success. OU then was BAMA now and THATS NEVER COMING BACK.
2. OU was BAMA/Ohio State now for fundamental reasons that no longer exist with the exception of outstanding coaches. Less restrictive Scholarship limits and conference make-up allowed OU to be what they were. The Big 8 conference was superior to the SWC. Texas athletes preferred Big 8 due to its notoriety in an age where onky the best matchups were on TV. No one was on TV more than OU with the Texas and Nebraska.
3. the state of Texas talent is now divided fairly equally amongst OU, Texas, Texas AM and some damn good players choose Baylor. That’s been the fundamentals now for a decade and not changing.
4. OU entering the SEC is not going to change things for the better, or the worse. It’s just going to look different. OU winning a conference championship in the SEC is going to look a LOT like what it looks like this year with TCU in the Big 12 (or a kstate or OSU in random years) or a Tennessee possibly in the SEC this year, Auburn every 6-8 years. You get the picture. Memorize it, because that’s OU.
5. NIL, transfer portal, Oklahoma’s lack of in state talent and legitimate in-state recruiting competition with OSU (only going to get harder when OSU winning big 12 championships with OU and texas out of the picture) are fundamentals NOT in OU’s favor. Ohio State is WAY WAY deeper in talent and population and has basically zero in-state recruiting competition. Same for LSU. Same for Georgia.
6. It’s going to be painful if this reality isn’t excepted. If admin-AD’s aren’t in touch with it you can end up like Nebraska. I like our leadership and all of our programs not just football. I think they get it. And I
understand why our fans don’t get it. But it’s the way it’s going to be.
Nebraska will NEVER be what they used to be. EVER.
OU will NEVER be as bad as nebraska has been.
But OU will NEVER be what they used to be.
And what OU and Nebraska used to be was very rare air and a place that only a few programs ever experienced. Which is pretty cool.
