Cincinnati Bengals release Joe Mixon after seven seasons

Former Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon has been released by the Cincinnati Bengals, making him a free agent for the first time in his career. He leaves Cincinnati having amassed more rushing yards and carries than any other running back in the vaunted class of 2017.

Quick hitters on several blue-chip recruits from UA Next in Dallas

Much more coming from both me and Brandon. Here’s what I’ve gleaned throughout the day that’s of the most immediate interest — aside from the fact that Oklahoma WR commit Elijah Thomas won MVP out of an absolutely loaded receiver group. That kid is the goods, but I digress.

First off, Marcus Wimberly is a legitimate athletic freak. He recorded the top high jump among the defensive back group, broad jumped 10’3”, and ran a laser-timed 4.48 in the 40-yard dash. I’ll post an interview with him in the coming days, but suffice it to say that Oklahoma is leading the pack and will likely end up with his commitment if there is room to take it.

Missouri has become Oklahoma’s biggest competition for Lamont Rogers. Yes, that is exactly why you think it is, and yes, you ought to be uneasy.

Here’s a fun little detail: Nelson Peterson Jr., Adrian’s younger half-brother, already has plans to return to Oklahoma next weekend after his visit yesterday. I’m told there is “intrigue” from the OU staff. We got the chance to watch him today and at the very least, he’s an impressive athletic specimen. He’s still got some work to do as far as his throwing mechanics are concerned, but genetics alone make him a hard prospect to ignore. And his interest in Oklahoma does appear to be quite high.

I am not overwhelmingly confident in Oklahoma’s odds to hold the lead for Ty Haywood, but after speaking with the five-star tackle, I am at least convinced that they do lead. The school that could wreak havoc on Oklahoma’s best-laid plans is Alabama, as Haywood grew up a fan of the Crimson Tide and has been a priority for Kalen DeBoer and his staff. For the moment, he’s got official visits set to Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and Bama, and has a timeline in mind. I’ll share that information in a full update.

Positive note on a major 2025 visitor yesterday (Sun 4:25pm)

Porter made his first-ever trip to Oklahoma for yesterday’s Future Freaks event. I will have more on him later, but I’ll drop you this nugget in the meantime: the visit went well enough that he scheduled an OV before departing.

Don’t mind Emmett Jones… he’s just playing blue-chip roulette for the final WR spot in his 2025 class.

Casey Thompson question

Refresh my memory. Did OU give Casey Thompson an offer out of high school?

Did he want to come to OU, but didn't get an offer? Did he get a scholly at Nebraska? Texas?

OK, that was four questions. The answers will help me in my less-than-excited attitude toward the guy being a Sooner. One transfer during a college career is normal and understandable. But two raises a flag with me.

Hoops: Quick note regarding the Porter Moser situation

I'm sure many of you have seen the recent Twitter rumors regarding Porter Moser’s future at Oklahoma. In light of those recent rumors, here is a detail I noticed today: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/eja832.

It could be nothing… it could be everything.

I've got a lot of feelers out tonight and will continue to keep you up to date on this entire situation.

Maybe he'll try to "rub" this one out too...

He will OV to Norman in June, per sources on the Oklahoma side. Emmett Jones is a bad man.

He has not yet been offered by the Sooners, but Bill Bedenbaugh has been building a relationship with Taylor — who owns eight FBS offers — for some time. If the offer does come, sources have indicated to me that this one could wrap up quickly.

OU has established very strong standing with Nick Evers’ little brother Drew, who is on track to be a blue-chipper when the class of 2026 rankings come out. All the same reasons the Evers family loved OU in Nick’s case are applicable to Drew’s recruitment, and Jeff Lebby was at the core of the issues that prompted Nick’s transfer. With Lebby no longer at Oklahoma, I would not be at all surprised if the Sooners ended up with Evers’ pledge, and this is a potential FutureCast I can see myself entering down the road.

On the flip side, I’m not feeling as strongly that the Sooners wind up with Legend Bey’s pledge, because the Sooner staff sees him as a wideout and he is beginning to feel a desire to play quarterback at the next level. TCU is the one school on his current offer sheet that has given him that option. If the whole conversation about position becomes a moot point and he decides he’s okay with playing receiver in the long run, I like OU’s chances. Emmett was Bey’s first offer and their relationship is rock solid. But he’s not a quarterback at Oklahoma, which throws a wrench in the calculus if the QB thing is what he sticks with. I’m also told OU is fading on fellow 2026 WR Brock Boyd, and has not really been in touch with the Southlake Carroll product of late.

Okay, let's compare our batting from last year (softball)

It's been hard to tell how our bats compare to last year, so I did the math. I really only care about OPS, OB%, and HR's, so that's what I looked at. Those three stats pretty much sum up everything else. Positive change is italicized, negative change is in bold. Skip to the end for the main takeaways!

Note: (HR) are calculated per 50 games

Pickering (vs Haylee Lee)
+0.076 (OPS) +.066 (OB%) -3 (HR)

Parker (vs Erickson)
+0.136 (OPS) +0.11 (OB%) +2.16 (HR)
Ludlam (vs Erickson)
+0.034 (OPS) +0.04 (OB%) -0.24 (HR)

Torres (vs Llyons)
-0.088 (OPS) -0.02 (OB%) -5.4 (HR)
Hodge (vs Llyons)
-0.309 (OPS) -0.14 (OB%) -8.2 (HR)

Brito (vs 2023)
+0.233 (OPS) +0.06 (OB%) +6.9 (HR)

Boone (vs 2023)
+0.08 (OPS) +0.02 (OB%) -1.6 (HR)

Jennings (vs 2023)
+0.092 (OPS) +0.01 (OB%) +3 (HR)

Coleman (vs 2023)
-0.311 (OPS) -0.09 (OB%) -8.1 (HR)

Hansen (vs 2023)
-0.112 (OPS) -0.02 (OB%) -1.5 (HR)

Sanders (vs 2023)
+0.214 (OPS) +0.10 (OB%) +1 (HR)

Torres (vs 2023)
+0.042 (OPS) +0.02 (OB%) +1.1 (HR)

TAKEAWAYS:
1. competition has been easier, so factor that in a bit when the differences are small.
2. Most players improved, with a major exception to Jada. Is she injured?? Her stats are way down. Hansen's are also down, but not as dramatically.
3. We simply cannot replace Grace Llyons offensively. Significant dropoff there.
4. New gals are outperforming the ones they replaced for the most part.
6. HRs are significantly down this year. We aren't even on the board for the most homeruns in the tournaments we've been playing in. Not sure what the deal is. Change in focus to getting more base hits and fewer pop outs? Has Patty or anyone addressed this?
