DrummBeat: Latest on transfer DT Damonic Williams and the Sooners' chances (Thurs 4:40 pm)

*** Parker and I have been talking with people regarding Williams for the last 24 hours. One thing we have both come to understand is that "money and NIL won't be the issue" in how OU is dealing with Williams. Multiple sources said that the Sooners "aren't going to lose out on Williams because of NIL."

I don't think you can take literal, but the sources we talked with are saying that OU -- much like with five-star OL Michael Fasusi or post player Brandon Garrison -- won't be short on what they offer in NIL, and to be honest, it will be "very substantial."

Now, that doesn't mean that OU will have the highest bid. There are rumors of some crazy numbers being offered to transfers this spring. But again, OU will make a very, very, very good offer to Williams.

So first and foremost we wanted to get that out of the way for those thinking NIL would be an issue here and OU won't play ball. A better analogy would be thinking of the David Stone recruitment.

*** Secondly, there is some strong confidence in the Sooners' chances here. Again, not saying that OU is the only school that he will visit, with Williams potentially visiting Texas, Oregon and Colorado this week. But what sources told me (that are directly involved on the Williams' side of things), this decision will come down to (obviously) NIL and who can best develop Williams into the best NFL prospect.

A source last night, that is in Williams' camp, told me, "OU was the first team that came to mind because of Todd Bates and the fact people around Williams know offensive coordinator Seth Littrell so well," the source said. "We want to see the defenses, how he will be used and developed on and off the field." The NIL portion always seem to go without saying regarding transfer targets.

*** Third, Williams will be in Norman on Friday and won't leave until Sunday, according to a source on Williams' side. That multiple day visit is different than what others will get, I am told. IF the visit to Texas takes place, it will be on Tuesday. IF the Oregon visit takes place, it will be on "Wednesday or Thursday." And Colorado didn't have a day set up yet, per the source LAST NIGHT. I am still checking on that for sure, but I think a lot things will depend on how the visit in Norman goes this weekend.

*** Regardless of how things go, the source also told me that a decision will be made soon, adding, "Damonic [Williams] didn't get to have a huge recruitment out of high school, so he may want to go through the process," the source said. "But no matter what it will be quick. We want this over and done within a week or so."

*** All in all, fans should feel good about the Sooners' chances, but also have some levity in how they look at it. We all know NIL changes how things go. Someone could come in and offer an insane number and make it very difficult to turn away. And normally, I would say that is a deal-breaker with OU. I just don't think that is here for a number of reasons. One being with a source on OU side of things saying, "If you get Williams, that opens up so much for everyone on the defense. Especially when you add him to what (OU) already has at DT. That type of guy isn't in the portal often."

*** Lastly, as I typed this, you all probably saw that transfer DL Phillip Blidi just announced that he isn't visiting OU anymore. That in itself should also make the Sooners Nation feel good, if you're reading between the lines. Still, OU has to close the deal, but as things stand right now, we like OU's chances and will update you all as the visit moves along -- whether good or bad news.

So far, it's trending really well for OU with the former freshman All-American and All-Big 12 DT... Stay tuned.

Side Note:
I still think OU wants to take two DT if they can. Right now, if the Sooners can hit 2/2 and add Jermayne Lole and Williams, you just made the Sooners' DL go from good to dang near great. When is the last time you can say that? And even if you go 1/2, you have made the DL much better, so this weekend is a win-win as long you get one.

But you want both -- obviously.

High expectations for the Defense

Every position should be better this year as BV has been working to turn a bunch of athlete's into a bunch of bone cracking, stingy, don't blow assignments, players.

On Nate Roberts (Sat 11:45am)

For those surprised by the timeline — yeah, I am too. Roberts had been adamant throughout the whole process that he wouldn’t decide until after his five OV’s, and what had kept us hanging on to the OU predictions was the knowledge that the Sooners would get the last crack at him on June 21-23.

I’ll eat the missed FutureCast. It is what it is. And in all transparency, I don’t think this kid will be one that Oklahoma tries all that hard to flip. He’s had his opportunity, and has now turned it down twice despite being at/near the top of OU’s overall priority list. So although he’ll likely still be on campus several more times before the end of the cycle, I think the ball will remain in Roberts’ court if he wants to seriously re-engage with Oklahoma. The Sooners will now turn their focus toward DaSaahn Brame, Chase Loftin and Dakotah Terrell.

DrummBeat: Spring game visit note on 4-star safety Omarion Robinson | Sooners’ staffers out on the road (Monday 2:10 PM)

*** I’ll start with four-star safety Omarion Robinson.

Am working on getting Robinson on the phone, but what I was told was that OU really impressed his family a lot. The Sooners are still viewed as the team to beat, but this one is very much going to an NIL type of recruitment.

But before people say that’s not good for OU, I’ll say that the Sooners haven’t even talked that much about it with Robinson or his camp just yet. The info I have gotten so far suggests that Oklahoma is going to make sure they Robinson in for the ChampU BBQ weekend June 21-23 and then make their final swing.

Georgia and Oregon are the other two programs vying for position in Robinson’s recruitment, but I’m told OU feels strongly about their standing with Robinson while also being keenly aware that they have a lot of work to do to make sure they stay in that spot.

Robinson is one that we will be watching and updating you all on over the next month or two. Could get interesting as we draw closer to decision time.

*** Quick update as we gather where the Sooners’ staffers are at today, but I’m told OU will be in Tulsa metro, Houston and Arkansas over the next few days.

Sources say stops at Jenks, Owasso, Bixby and more are set to happen today. Also told that OU will be by to see four-star DE Max Granville in the next few days and five-star safety Jonah Williams.

Will get more specifics and update you all soon, but wanted you all to hear what I knew early on.

Hawkins isn’t ready and looks like a freshman.

Imo Booty was the number 2 qb . Hawkins is lightning fast but his mind is going to fast right now and he’s trying to win the game by himself . Over time it will slow down for him but he isn’t close to the thrower Arnold is . I wanted to say this early on when everyone was raving about him In practice videos. He may not of had the 1st team OL and wrs when he was on the field either so I don’t wanna beat him down that much but for anyone thinking he was going to push for qb1 this year or next , that’s a pipe dream at this point . Booty looked impressive in limited time . If Casey Thompson can’t go next year then Booty has a real shot at qb2

D-line shows great 'improvements' this spring, but growth still needed

"A year ago, I think one of the keys to the depth of improvement that we made was the competitive depth that we had. We’ve got one guy that has started a college football game returning interior-wise. And so that’s always a little bit concerning."

The spring was a huge step forward for the interior defensive line, but the staff knows there are questions marks heading into the offseason.

DrummBeat: Big additional visitor | Five-star NOT in Norman this weekend | Positive update on five-star OL (Thurs 5:05 PM)

*** I will start with the bad news and just tell you all that five-star OL Ty Haywood won't be in Norman this weekend, per sources.

I know Texas was a place that Haywood was also linked to be visiting, but even they are suspect on that happening. So knowing those two things, the team that seems to be making a move is Texas A&M, with his teammate committing there this past week.

*** The Haywood news isn't great news for you all, but as things are trending negatively with Haywood, the exact opposite seems to be happening with five-star OL Michael Fasusi. By no means am I saying the Sooners lead for Fasusi, but the last visit made a big mark and the five-star will be back in Norman on April 25th as well. That makes it four visits since January and he still has his official in June to take place.

Either way, we will update you all as we get more on both five-star OL's.

*** On a good note, the Sooners are going to host 2027 DE/TE Zane Rowe.

Rowe is a player that has five-star talent, and as of today, I would bet he is one when those are handed out for the 2027 classes.

As for the Sooners, they like Rowe at DE. Rowe seems to really like that idea and has built a strong relationship with DE coach Miguel Chavis early on.

This will be Rowe's fourth visit to OU this spring as well, so as I say, "follow the visits."

Oklahoma makes major surge with four-star OL Darius Afalava: "They really did blow our expectations [away]"

Boy, did Afalava love his time in Norman. He has become a serious possibility for Oklahoma in the 2025 class.
