DrummBeat: Five-star safety note | More on four-star safety target in 2025 (Fri 2:45 PM)

*** Obviously, the Sooners went and saw five-star safety Jonah Williams on Tuesday. OU brought majority of the OU staff with them in Brandon Hall, Miguel Chavis, Todd Bates and Jay Valai and all stayed for his baseball game.

That amount of attention hailed Williams’ way seemed to stand out with the five-star safety, and his family, with Williams now looking to get back to OU “sometime in May,” per multiple sources.

A&M has been making a run with their stellar baseball season, and so has Texas (and Ohio St), but the Sooners still remain viewed as the team to beat — though the gap has closed quite a bit as of late.

If the Sooners get Williams back in May, the next plan will be to get him on campus for the ChampUBBQ on June 21-23rd. Much like four-star safety Omarion Robinson, Oklahoma is battling Oregon and others (those listed above for Williams) for that visit date. With Robinson, it seems the Sooners may end up winning that battle as things stand today (we will watch that closely), but there is time for that change back as well.

However, as for Williams, Oklahoma needs to get more face time with the five-star and his family to ‘seal the deal’ regarding that official in June. Oklahoma really wants to make that weekend the biggest of them all, so that is why they are prioritizing it so much. Naturally, other weekends are good for visits if that’s all that can be fit in, but as far as pomp and circumstance or wanting to put best foot forward, the ChampU BBQ is always that for OU — outside of the Party in the Palace in July.

That will be what we watch the most with Williams. Will he make it back in May? That would be the first trip since earlier this past winter. If the visit takes place, you have to feel much better about the Sooners’ chances moving forward. If not, that gap between OU and the other schools may continue to trend in the wrong direction.

The other question is will OU be able to take both Robinson and Williams? Will both want to be in the same class together? Lots to sift through over the next few months.

We will update you all as we get more, but wanted you aware of the latest on what we have heard on Williams and Robinson.

4-Piece Nuggets: Notes on a recent 2026 visitor and three top 2025 targets

— Blue-chip 2026 safety Isaiah Williams had an outstanding experience at Oklahoma over the weekend, and in speaking to a couple of sources close to that recruitment, I’m close to entering a FutureCast in the Sooners’ favor. It’s probably a little early in the process to do so, which is my hesitation. Texas and Texas A&M are also heavily in play, so with over a year and a half to the finish line, I don’t want to start creating an expectation that Williams winds up in the class. But I’m told he will be back on campus this summer and that the Sooners are firmly in the lead for the time being.

— Spoke with Kole Briehler again today. Oklahoma will be out to see him on May 7, represented by both Todd Bates and Miguel Chavis. The Sooners have stayed in hot pursuit of Briehler throughout the spring, and despite a recent visit to Ohio State and an offer from the Buckeyes, Briehler is still a definite OU lean. He’s not really entertaining any schools from outside his top three (OU, tOSU, Stanford) right now, although Oregon has established contact with him recently. We’ll see if the Ducks pull the trigger with an offer, but not much has changed with Briehler otherwise, and Oklahoma is a destination with which his entire family is on board. Especially given that the Sooners get the last OV here, I feel pretty solid about my FutureCast to Oklahoma. Any initial worry about Ohio State’s late entry into the sweepstakes has ebbed.

— If the recent predictions elsewhere that favor Oklahoma for Antoni Ogumoro aren’t enough of an indication that the Sooners are in good shape there, I’ve got a couple of quotes from the three-star OL to pass along. The Sooners hosted him for an official visit this past weekend, as we had previously reported would be the case. Here are two particularly relevant comments he made about the visit when I spoke to him.

“Creed Humphrey and Ben Powers, they messaged me, just letting me know they hoped I’d enjoy the visit. And I thought it was fake at first! I didn’t believe it, and I messaged back and said, ‘I appreciate that. I appreciate you hitting me up.’ And I wasn’t expecting an answer back, but they were actually having full conversations with me. I was like, ‘Oh, dang! I’m really talking to these guys right now!’ And they were just giving me tips and letting me know what the program’s about. And man, I really appreciate that.

“And Coach Venables, I really appreciate him because not only did they really help with my little brother, but he didn’t try to pressure me in any way. A lot of coaches sometimes on these visits — and I get it; it’s part of the recruiting process — but they try and pressure. He didn’t. He told me he respects what I’m doing in staying true to my word and taking these visits and come to a decision together [with my family]. He understood where I was coming from, and I really appreciated that.”

Should you need some help reading between the lines there, know that Ogumoro will take the remainder of his OV’s, but that Oklahoma is in the pole position and I don’t expect anything to change in that regard.

— Caught up the other day with four-star TE Chase Loftin, who is in the process of setting up his official visit to Oklahoma. He’s already got June OV’s booked to Florida State, Texas A&M and Nebraska, with the Nebraska trip falling on the weekend of the ChampU BBQ. I know Oklahoma would prefer to have him on campus that weekend, but they’ll make arrangements for a different set of dates if he’s unwilling to budge on his Nebraska OV. Loftin is also kicking around the possibility of an official to Miami, but one way or another, expect a decision in late June or July. This one won’t last too long after OV’s. I think Oklahoma still has an edge here, but not enough of one that I’d be comfortable entering a FutureCast, because I’ll also acknowledge that the door has opened significantly for FSU and A&M over the last couple of months. I still have a hard time believing Loftin stays home with the Huskers.

OU has the advantage of having been Loftin’s first offer, and he’s told me that they had the most impressive game-day environment among the schools he’s visited. Ultimately, I think this is a classic case of a recruitment that’ll be decided during OV season; I don’t think there is any program that has a clear-cut advantage here, even though I’d probably give OU the highest odds by a slight margin. I will add that Loftin’s girlfriend is signed to run track at Dallas Baptist — which, one would imagine, bodes well for OU and A&M in particular.

Patty Gasso picks up career win No. 1,500 with 2-1 victory over UCF

It didn't come easy, but Oklahoma managed to outlast UCF in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel on Saturday to give Coach Gasso win No. 1,500.

DrummBeat: Note on Bai Jobe

Just a quick note: As of today, I wouldn’t expect OU to make much of a move. From what I was told by a source close to that situation, Penn St, Cal, Arkansas and several others have made extensive contact with Jobe and his people.

On that same note, I’m told OU did reach out when Jobe initially got into the portal, but not much has come of that since.

Now, I’m not completely writing OU off here because situations can change as long as the portal is open, but I’m told Jobe wants to have a decision “in the next few weeks to be ready to roll for June and the start of summer workouts wherever he chooses.”

So unless the Sooners start to move quickly (and that could become an option if there are portal entries down the line), it seems there will be a hill to climb to get back in it.

All that said, the one thing I continually am told is that Jobe would love to get back a bit closer to home. Naturally, PSU and Cal are the opposite of that, but he also is looking for the best fit program and scheme wise for him, so that take precedence over everything, according to sources.

Will continue to monitor that situation but wanted to update you all on what I’ve heard today on Jobe.

BV Culture - NIL Question

I keep seeing over and over how OU "could" break the bank for Damonic Williams but they wont go crazy with NIL because it would upset the Locker room/Culture BV has established. But would it really? It doesn't seem to be a problem in NFL locker rooms where QBs, Edge, and WRs make 10 to 20 times more than 75% of the players on the team. And I don't buy the professional vs ammeter argument - These players are pros once they started earning big NIL dollars. It doesn't seem to be a problem at other big college programs either. Arch Manning makes more than 90% of the players on Texas' roster despite never playing a meaningful snap. Somehow their locker room didn't fall apart last year when they damn near made the national title game. I just don't buy this whole locker room argument with respect to OU's NIL strategy. At best its a coping mechanism, and at worst it's straight up false. Am I wrong, and what is so different about OU's locker room and everyone else's?
