OT: Keith Ford reunited with Stoops

Stoops' Arlington XFL team selected RB Keith Ford in the fifth round. Other former Sooners drafted thus far include: Charleston Rambo (Rd 1/Orlando Guardians); Jeff Badet (Rd 6/Vegas Vipers); Abdul Adams (Rd 9/St. Louis Battlehawks) and Jordan Smallwood (Rd 11/Arlington Renegades). Hopefully this league will have a longer shelf life this time around.

Fire the whole staff including BV

How in the hell can anyone defend this bullsh**??? Baylor, WV and K state out physicalled us. Remember when he said he wanted a suffocating physical defense ? Gtfoh. Can't wait to hear all the homer excuses about how FULR left him with nothing to work with meanwhile Sonny Dykes brought in a whole new staff, inherited lower ranked players and is undefeated not to mention embarrass TF out of us. We need to start over. I rode with BV through it and even stayed the whole RRS laughing at everyone for leaving early. Man was I stupid. BV ain't it and if you think he is then you are dumb AF!!!! He's a great coordinator and that's it.

If you’re Jackson Arnold’s parents….

Looking for objectivity here.

This coaching staff has not, to this point, inspired a lot of confidence with either results or in game decision making. If you were JA’s parents, you still feeling steadfast in your son’s commitment? I gotta be honest, other than Brent’s track record of being a quality person (and let’s be honest he’s not the only HC out there with that trait), I’d be encouraging re-evaluating all options. Yes, he made a commitment, and as a parent I think honoring your commitments is an important thing to teach, but he committed to a vision that to this point is far, far away from what was promised and there are very reasonable concerns about Brent’s ability long term.

In other words, if you were objective, would you wager the chance for future 1st round money on OU/this staff over literally every other option?

But Carey and Eddie noticed some things in the post game interviews tonight. Eddie also noticed something in the defeated players coming off the field. We're diving into why this team isn't getting better and what it could be about the makeup of this locker room that could lead to such dismal results on the field after 10 games. This team is 5-5. 5-5!!!!!! How can they sleep at night? The only way that's easy is if you just don't care.

BV talks Jackson Arnold w/o saying 'Jackson Arnold'

In the middle of a long answer about how recruiting at 5-5 can offer opportunities for young'uns to come in and play early, BV said this (wink wink nudge nudge):

"Start with the beginning, like, say we had a top-notch quarterback committed. Like, he could go anywhere in the country and schools are still coming after him, really hard — excellent schools that are in those big games that you're talking about or are having those successful seasons. But somehow, some way he continues to stay loyal to you because he sees a vision. He sees track record. He has dreams to have this amazing opportunity at your school, and he's developed these relationships that mean something to him."

Last year's record mirage

Let's look at how close we were last year to finish with a losing record. Then you remove your 4 best players (all int he front 7) on the defense and we thought we were going to be better on that side of the ball? Then we lose our 5 star Elite QB who save many of the games last year for us and thought we'd be better there as well? Some of us need to temper our enthusiam and take off the crimson colored glassses.

* Tulane - Win 40-35 but Tulane has the ball with 2 minutes to play at midfield with a chance to win the game. Easily could have been a Loss. (0-1)
* Western Carolina - Win (1-1)
* Nebraska - Win 23-16 While this could have been a loss as well. I'll split the difference with the Tulane game and call this a W. (2-1)
* West Virginia - Win 16-13 - This absolutely could have been a loss. I seem to remember them having a bad snap late that killed their chances. Refresh my memory if I'm wrong. We'll call this another potential close Loss.(2-2)
* KState - felt like we had this one in the bag until we almost choked the game late. We recovered the onside kick so we'll say Win here. (3-2)
* Texas - no explanation needed. If we don't have Caleb Williams we lose that game becuase Ratler was pathetic that day. Loss (3-3)
* TCU - one of our only dominating wins all season. Win (4-3)
* Kansas - Anyone want to argue if we stop Kansas from scoring if Caleb doesn't pull off that 4th down where he grabs the ball and takes it for the first down? Loss (4-4)
* Tech - Our last dominating Win of the season. Win (5-4)
* Baylor - Loss (5-5)
* Iowa State - Iowa State with the ball and driving down the field throwing it to the TE from Norman all day. Easily could have been an L. If they score there, they were going for 2 and the win. (5-6)
* OSU - Loss (5-7)

SO basically we could have been 5-7 last year then we remove the best players and arguably your biggest leaders on the team. Yeah I'm disapointed as well in this season and some of the losses are ineexcusable on how we lost them but make no mistake. Even when we went 11-2 last year that could have been a lot worse if a few bounces don't go our way.

Tulsa World interview with PJ Adebawore and Cayden Green about their commitments to OU

Two of the nation's top recruits were asked this question: How strong are your commitments to Oklahoma?

Eric Bailey

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Oklahoma’s roller-coaster football season has been hard for Sooner Nation to accept.
But have the results put commitments from a pair of major 2023 recruiting targets in jeopardy?
Defensive end Adepoju Adebawore and offensive tackle Cayden Green met with the Tulsa World this week and were asked this question: How strong are their pledges?
“I’m very firm. It’s a very strong commitment,” Adebawore said. “If it wasn’t firm, I wouldn’t have committed. It’ll stay that way.”
Said Green: “I won’t be decommitting. I’m signing next month and I’ll be at school in January.”

The Kansas City-area stars are scheduled to attend Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. Bedlam game in Norman. They plan to sign with the Sooners on Dec. 21 and move to Norman on Jan. 14.

Rivals lists Adebawore (North Kansas City High School) as the nation’s fourth-best defensive end and 53rd-best player overall. The recruiting service also has Green (Lee’s Summit North High School) as the 39th-best player overall and fourth-best offensive tackle.
Oklahoma’s 5-5 record isn’t ideal, but being patient is important for both recruits.

“They know they have a lot of rebuilding that they have to do, which takes time,” Adebawore said. “I feel like you really can’t judge them too much off the season because you have to give them time to rebuild.”

The coaches’ messages have been encouraging to Green.
“They know that this is just the beginning,” he said. “Coach (Brent) Venables hasn’t been in the office that long. They say don’t give up hope. I know. I know by the time my class gets older, we’ll have a national championship. That’s why I signed up for it a long time ago.”
Recruiting never sleeps. While Green isn’t drawing many late contacts from schools, schools are still trying to contact Adebawore. He understands that’s part of the process. Two heavyweight programs have reached out via text just this week.
How does he handle those situations?

“I understand if they want a guy, they’re going to continue to try and go for them,” Adebawore said. “I just laugh sometimes. The stuff they say sometimes … sometimes you can respect some people. Sometimes it’s like they try to bash the college I’m committed to. Don’t do that. It just makes it worse.”

Venables was asked during his Tuesday news conference about OU’s challenges about recruiting with a 5-5 record.
The first-year coach mentioned the roster turnover that’s been unprecedented at Oklahoma. Venables spoke about three one-score losses where a little bit crisper play could have turned things around.
And then he talked about history and creating relationships with recruits.
"Schemes on both sides of the ball and coaches’ experience in big games and successful teams and things of that nature, I think that goes a long way,” Venables said. “And we have a long history, not a winning season here, winning season there. I'm talking about a long history of success.

“And then (prospects) in the recruiting game, on their side of it, they're trying to know people and what's real and what isn't as well. And so you come from a place of genuineness and authenticity. I think people see that, you know, when you're being real and you're being honest and it is relationship driven.”
Adebawore is excited about his position coach, Miguel Chavis.
“You can see he’s different,” Adebawore said about his first interaction with the OU assistant. “He was in the car and was on FaceTime — he loves FaceTime, we don’t’ call. It’s always FaceTime. He’s just a great dude, a standout dude.”
Adebawore admits it was tough to see defensive end Colton Vasek recently flip his pledge from OU to Texas.

“If definitely sucks for the OU program, but if that’s what he feels is best for him, you’ve got to support him,” Adebawore said. “You don’t want a kid going to a school that he really doesn’t want to go to.
“I wanted to make sure before I committed to OU that I didn’t want it to be a commitment and then I’m still thinking about another school. In my mind, that’s not a real commitment,” Adebawore said. “If he feels that it’s home, let it be. I would hate for someone to come to college and not be at peace of mind ...”
The 2023 recruiting class has a group chat where staying together is important for this recruiting class.
“Of course I hope that the class stays intact and I hope we can get a couple more guys,” Green said. “At the end of the day, as a recruit, you got to do what’s best for you. If these guys feel elsewhere is best for them, good luck to him.

“But I think overall we’ll still finish with a top-10 class, so I’m excited.”

I know there had been some talk of Josh Bates and King Joseph Edwards but neither will be able to make it as they have their own state playoff games to deal with at the moment. I'm still working to confirm a few other possibilities but obviously it's a pretty strong weekend and I'm expecting a few more late emerging visitors including the possibility of some guys making late plans if they don't have Saturday team meetings - should they come up short on Friday nights and their season ends, etc.

**So one of the more interesting storylines this week has been some of the gossip around Xadavien Sims and Michigan State after 247 expert Steve Wiltfong put in a crystal ball for the Spartans.

That immediately led to some discussions about his trainer, Sean Cooper, and whether or not he is pushing guys away from Oklahoma.

I've known Cooper for a few years now and while you all know that I'm one who is usually pretty skeptical of trainers - and have told him the same - he's always been very honest and direct with me and I can't have more confidence that he's a guy who really doesn't much care where his guys go as long as it's a good opportunity for them.

Beyond my own feelings, I've spoken to sources around Norman as well as to Cooper himself and he's a guy who has done well by Oklahoma from beginning to end. The Sooners have a chance to land several players from his group and I can say that Cooper has always been incredibly complimentary of the Sooners and has built good relationships with several members of the staff.

This wasn't meant as any kind of defense of Cooper - it is far more about negating any ideas that his involvement is going to hurt Oklahoma as I still feel that if the Sooners had made Bai Jobe a focus that's likely where he ends up. It's also worth noting that should Sims and Jobe both end up in East Lansing, that neither guy is an 'Oklahoma kid' that grew up dreaming of the Sooners or anything.

***Along those same lines it's been clear in listening to Brent Venables that he is going to be working to make more of a priority of in-state recruiting and one player that I am continuing to tell you all to be aware of is Checotah, Okla. 2025 two-way standout Elijah Thomas.

As I've stated before he grew up a Sooner fan and the Sooners are definitely interested in the young prospect but what is becoming pretty clear is they'd like some young in-state stars to come up and camp before making any offers but Brandon Hall made it clear to Thomas during his visit for the Baylor game that they are very interested.

"Coach Hall said he’d love to have me there but they don’t offer 2025 because they want us to develop academically," Thomas said of the Sooners lead in-state recruiter. "He was talking to me about getting up to camp though."

Again, I'd bet Thomas is among Oklahoma's first in-state offers whenever they truly begin beyond Washington tight end Nate Roberts.
