My list of complaints about the coaching staff

1) I know Josh agrees with me, but use the clock to your advantage on offense. There is no sense in going up tempo in close games late in the third and the fourth. Your defense is no longer embarrassingly bad, but they are shaky at best. And they can't get big stops when it matters most.

2) This staff and Brent Venables are shell-shocked with teams going for it on 4th down. You want to build some confidence in your defense? Punt on 4th-and-3 instead of going for a long field goal in pouring rain. Pin the other team deep. Use field position to your advantage. WVU had great field position all day.

3) You have to explore bringing back the wildcat in key situations. You aren't getting it done on 3rd and 4th and short. That has been a good package. Make it a bigger part of the offense. That you haven't done that since the Texas game on a more regular basis is a massive fail.

4) I get that Brent is making some of these decisions for the first time, but you've got to be more honest with your assessment of where this team is and what it can do. Sometimes you just need to punt. I get that. But kicking a field goal with that much time left was going to give WVU plenty of time to drive back down the field. West Virginia would have scored a touchdown if they needed to. A field goal was never going to do it. It was either go for it in the wildcat or punt it and pin them deep. That's kind of the same complaint.

Quoteboard (Bedlam week)

It's still Bedlam.

OSU challenges?

They’re just talented. Very aggressive. They play really well on defense. They've had their ups and downs for sure, but they’re really talented and they’re very aggressive.

Send seniors off right note?
Yeah, just send the seniors out on a high note, and shoot, just winning this game. Every game’s important and it’s hard to win. But you’ve gotta be motivated every day. And I know things haven’t gone our way. But every Monday you’ve got to come and know there’s opportunity this Saturday. And it is coming to an end. So putting all our energies forward in that.

First OU rivalry game?
Yeah, just not playing in any game is not a great feeling. But like I said, I’m grateful for this opportunity. It’s another game, but shoot, it’s Bedlam. It’s fun. There’s history behind this. I know all the guys are excited, regardless of what’s happened so far. But we can’t control that. We gotta focus on this week, and we got a fun one coming up.

Thought about possibility of being last home game here?
Yeah, shoot. Just focusing on the now, the present. That’s all I can do. At times, people focus on the future or the past, and that affects their present. So just trying to stay present as much as possible, and also just play my butt off and finish the right way.

Eric Gray
Finish?

That’s what us leaders have come together and said. We have to finish strong for the young guys. We have to show these guys how to persevere no matter what and to gain that momentum going into next year or the bowl game. To have that so they can say because – they’re going to face it again – when the seniors were here, they did a tremendous job of showing us what to do so we could lead for the next group.

Bowl eligible?
I just remember when I was a young guy. I know how important the bowl game is, not only for camaraderie, for having a good time. You get to spend five, six days at a different place. You’re practicing at a different place, a change of scenery. Bowl games are great for the young guys and the old guys to build camaraderie and the momentum for next year. Another game under your belt to finish strong.

Last home game (potentially)?
It’s very important. Being at The Palace, The Palace has been a special place to me. And I’ve only been here for two years. Playing two seasons here, The Palace has been a special place. Just the rich tradition of The Palace. Being the last one in there, makes it very special.

Senior day?
Most definitely. I’ll be going through senior day. My whole family will be here. They travel to every game.

On-record about it being last home game?
I have no comment on that right now.

Woodi Washington
Is this going to be senior day for you?

Yes. For sure. I'm definitely walking on Senior Night, but that doesn't mean my plans aren't to come back to school. We just have to see how it goes.

How cool has it been to see CJ Coldon's role grow?
I think it's great for CJ. He's a transfer guy who came in the summer for us. At first, he wasn't getting a lot of reps. Then he ended up getting hurt, hurt his knee a little bit. But now he's back in the fire and he's doing a great job for us.

How much have you taken pride in stepping up for a depleted secondary?

I'm really just voicing my opinion more. At first, I wasn't a very vocal guy. But I'm just trying to talk more and stay locked in on the sideline. When things go bad, I'm speaking out and trying to make sure we're good.

Drake Stoops
Senior day?

"Definitely very important. It means the world for me. I'm definitely excited for that honor. I'll be going through the festivities."

Bedlam memories?
"Bedlam's crazy. I remember growing up watching it. Getting to go to a few. It's always this time of year. Freezing weather. Fans going crazy. But to play in a few has been a blessing and being on the right side of it couple of times. Last year that got us. It's definitely been a rivalry I'll remember. It was very similar to OU-Texas. Maybe not the same magnitude. But it's the in-state rivalry. So it's a big deal to a lot of people. I know it's a big deal to me and a big deal to this team. So we're gonna put our best foot forward."

Favorite?
"Maybe the one there wherever Blake Bell threw the touchdown pass to Jalen Saunders. That one or the one here with overtime when Brennan Clay broke a couple of tackles to score and win the game. That one was pretty cool for sure. Those two are my favorites."

Jovantae Barnes
Learning from EG?

It’s been like — just watching somebody be great at what he does. It’s like many people said. He’s been a pro since he’s been here. Just coming in and him guiding me under his wing, him and Marcus Major, it was a big transition from high school to college and I came in January so I had to make it fast. And he just did a great job of staying on me and making sure we had extra film about three times a day. And just making sure everything I messed up on he fixed it. Not only in film but also in practice. We’d go outside 15 minutes before practice and he’d just help me with things like that. So he’s been a big help and a great big brother.

Recovery process?
I feel great. I’m just glad to be back. I kept my head down and kept working. It was no negative emotion in my body. I just kept a smile on my face and kept going because I’m just happy to be here and blessed to be in the position I’m in. So I just kept a smile on my face and kept working until I was 100 percent again.

Older dudes message about Bedlam?
It’s been a big motivation toward everybody. This is a huge game. Its Oklahoma State versus Oklahoma. It speaks for itself. It’s just going into it, there’s no jokes. Everybody’s going into it pretty serious with a good attitude and just keeping positive body language again because obviously we came from West Virginia. It didn’t go how we expected but it’s just on to the next and everybody’s doing a great job of just keeping the mindset and just focusing on the next game and not focusing on the past.

Joe Bamisile, OU find rhythm in blowout win

Oh, so that could be this year's team? A little more like it. OU 74-53.

And for those that missed the game thread, Doc Sadler was in attendance so... there’s that.

Story:

2022 Team

Thoughts of an Old-old member: Our defense is not as good as we want, but that side of the game was not recruited as it should have under Riley and he took the heart of the Offense and the team with him to USC (Williams). Brent Venables is a great coach and has a great staff, they simply don't have the players on board to play the game like we want them to play, I think we will get it back to OU standards but we have to have the patience to rebuild the mess left us.

November 2022 version of my 2023 Class Prediction

Early November 2022 version of my 2023 Class Prediction –
So for those that enjoy reading these, this will be my last prediction on this site.
As those know, I really enjoy following Sooner recruiting and I’m taking an opportunity to pursue that interest.
Thanks to everyone for the recruiting conversations over the last 21 years.
(Please don’t turn this into some bash fest. Not my intent at all)

My best guess on the class right now.
I’m sadly projecting OU is going to lose Kaleb Spencer.
Maybe it's the hope talking but I think OU beats Clemson for Kayden McDonald.
OU holds onto Vasek.
OU's apparent lead for Akana pays off with a verbal in November.
And the 9 months waiting on a flip from Bowen pays off around a Bedlam visit.
Ou adds 3 star for now DB Khalil Barnes who is super fast on film.
And adds Morgan Pearson to offset losing Kaleb Spencer.

Does OU look in the portal for a 1 yr starter at QB?

Now that we have a large body of work, between UCF and OU, of DG running Lebby's system might OU look to find a one year upgrade in the portal? Has DG reached his ceiling....is his level of play good enough for a much improved season in 23? I'm not sure there would even be anyone out there with one year available like a Hurts did. No matter the talent level of JA (I think he is elite) it's hard for an 18 year old to come in and lead a program of OU's status. What say you?

OU 74, UNCW 53 final

OU (1-1) vs. UNC-Wilmington 7 p.m., ESPN+.

It's like snap out of it, ha. Grant Sherfield did in the second half. Jalen Hill played a complete game and Los Uzan is gonna be a star sooner than later. Some goodies from Moser, including getting a quality answer about my questions on redshirts.

Porter Moser

Jalen Hill woke up?

It’s such a great lesson for the young guys. You talk about the concept of getting past mad, getting past sad. It’s such a big thing in college sports. Get over being mad and sad. He was mad about how he played. You don’t feel great when you play that way. He got past that and went to work. He just focused on what makes him good. He missed a couple of easy ones last game and a tough one to start this game. His mind was in such a great place. We really talked to the young guys about this. His mindset was so good of just coming in. It wasn’t just based off watching shots going in. He started out and his defense was at such a high level. Like the way he was switching, how physical he was on defense. That’s what you do. It was really important for us because he’s a key player for us to play well. It’s also an example to everybody else that if you don’t play well, get past it, let it go and come back the next game.

I ask about asst coach?
I will be having another person. I’m close to being able to make a decision on it. it just makes sense. In the next couple of days, I’ll really be able to expand on that. I am planning on bringing someone in.

I ask about Sherfield newcomer balance?
It’s a balance that point guards have to make. But a newcomer, it’s a little more. You’re thinking about it a little more. I think the more games has under his belt, the better. I thought he had a really good second half. I didn’t think he had a bad first half, just a lot of opportunities didn’t come his way. That balance is normal coming in as an older point guard. I have total confidence in him. He’s doing it well in practice. His mentality is really good about it. That balance is real. The more games you get logged in, you don’t think about that balance. It just naturally happens. Getting teammates involved and looking for your shot as well. His shot comes in the flow of our offense a lot, which is what we want.

Los the 6th man?
“I don’t really dub anybody as like sixth man. Sometimes it naturally happens, like that you dub the player off the bench with the most minutes gets sixth man. But I really don’t dub it. I can just tell you this about ‘Los: Every day his confidence is growing. Every day, he’s got a jet sweep that can get the domino started for us. In a tight game, he stepped up, made free throws, made a big 3, made a nice pass. He made plays, had a nice defensive play.
“I think he, too, looked at his defensive performance against Sam Houston State and was like, ‘I can do better.’ But his confidence is growing every day. He’s earned what he’s getting. He’s getting prime time minutes and we have confidence in him on both ends.”

Joe Bamisile?
“What I’ve seen with Joe is a really good attitude, a really good want to get better, to get up the floor. And I see a bigger — I think he has big room to improve and get on the floor and produce more. Joe’s always been a scorer his whole life. He had some opportunities last game, it didn’t go his way but I didn’t think it affected his defense. I thought Joe played really hard on defense. I thought he did some things, and I think sometimes new guys they press a little bit.
“But what I’ve seen from Joe is a great attitude, I see him working hard every day, watching extra tape on his own. The remedy for Joe is gonna be to see some of these shots fall for him. You’re gonna see that confidence come back and see some shots fall. I think that’s what the doctor’s gonna order for Joe.”

I ask about redshirting anybody? Portal age, can you even do that?
“It’s interesting you ask that question. We’ve been talking about it for about 72 hours. We’ll see. Not ready to make any final decisions yet, but it is that time of year where — It is hard because you redshirt a kid and then he leaves. I've had so much success in my career with sitting out guys and developing them and getting them better. Just a lot of them don't want to do it now. Or some coaches are hesitant, like why? And then they leave. I don't know. I've been going on both sides. And I still think I believe it's really good if you're not going to get your minutes. It's really good. So haven't made the decision yet. Bouncing around the idea. And we'll know shortly if we're going to do it."

Wilmington?
“They’ve played two games. The game against Carolina, they were toe-to-toe. They were right there and the thing that sticks out to me is they had 16 or 17 offensive rebounds against one of the longest teams in the country. The next night they did the same thing. They're averaging 16 and a half offensive rebounds and that's a lot of extra shots. They’re really sound defensively. They're long. They do a lot of really good things. Really sound defensively. We ca’tn have a high number of turnovers and then give them 17 extra possessions. I mean, I don't care what you say. You watch Carolina — with Bacot and Nace. Seven-foot. 6-foot-8. And they still got 17 rebounds. They go after the glass hard. They got a great combination of some really quick guards with some long wings. And so we've got to take care of the ball. I mean, we just can't give as many extra possessions. We dropped the number in turnovers. We got to keep that thing going so it hopefully gets to 10 or below. And then we got to rebound. We’ve got to rebound against Wilmington.”

Eddie's funeral

This morning on the radio, Eddie stated that he would like his funeral to be at sooner scoop headquarters. He wants a live band playing which would probably be Kings of Leon. My suggestion would be that the first song played is sex on fire. Would any of you go wait in line to see this man on his final day and any suggestions on songs or bands? Suggestions on food served?
