DrummBeat: Some team notes on weight gains/losses from a few freshmen since arriving in January

*** Freshman RB Xavier Robinson said he showed up close to 250lbs and is now 228lbs. Added that, “I’m so much lighter on my feet. I feel great where I’m at.”

Source told me the other day, “X is gonna play. He moves so fast for a guy his size and he’s so strong. He will be a weapon.”

*** Freshman DL David Stone said he arrived “between 275 and 280.” Stone also said that he wants to be close to 300lbs by the season, but he has some gains to go, adding, “I’m the most I’ve ever been right now. But I’m in the 280’s. And even with that, I’m moving faster than I did at IMG, which is kind of crazy.”

The expectation is that he will be close to 300 come September. He says it’s a relief that he has six months to get there so pressure isn’t there and he has “my own race to run to gain that weight.”

*** Similarly, freshman NT Jayden Jackson has put on some solid weight himself, but he said it’s been easy, adding, “I came in 285 to 290. That’s a pretty good weight (for the coaches), but it’s the SEC and you gotta be pretty big. But I’m at 297 right now. They are trying to get the D-Lineman to 300.”

“Gaining weight isn’t really that hard for me,” Jackson went on talking weight expectations for DL. “That is a pretty good bonus I had, instead of losing weight (he said with sly smile on his face)”

*** Finally, I checked in with Sooners freshman DE Danny Okoye on his weight and he added/confirmed a nugget we posted on here a month ago, regarding his 40-yard dash time, saying, “I came in weighing 233lbs and now I’m 255lbs. I ran my forty in 4.56 seconds when they timed us.”

*** We will have more notes on newcomers, but wanted to get that up for you all quickly.

Spring preview: Running backs

Gavin Sawchuk will be OU's starting running back. But how the depth chart shakes out behind is an intriguing question:

Sooners set to host three elite targets next Monday (Tue 1:05pm)

I am told two Future Freaks visitors, 2026 DB Markel Ford and 2026 ATH Legend Bey, have flexed their visit to March 11 to join their teammate Lamont Rogers in Norman. All three Mesquite Horn standouts will be on hand for the Sooners’ first day of spring practice.

Four-star ATH Jermaine Bishop on Oklahoma: "It's just a family down there"

Walked away from the weekend feeling that OU has an early advantage here. Long way to go, but he likes the Sooners a lot.

Win No. 20: Soares, Darthard lead Sooners to win over Cincinnati

"It's what scripts are made out of."

The Sooners looked dead in the water on Tuesday and likely would've been without big plays from the senior duo of Le'Tre Darthard and Rivaldo Soares.

DrummBeat: Sooners add 2025 four-star WR to visit list

I’m told that 2025 Houston (TX) Dekaney four-star WR Tanook Hines is slated to visit Oklahoma this weekend.

I expect he will be at the Under Armor Camp on Sunday in Arlington (TX), so I hope to get an update on his visit and how the junior day went at that time.

Regardless, that’s another solid addition to Oklahoma’s already loaded “Future Freaks” JR Day that is set to take place on Saturday.

Oklahoma in a good spot for a newly minted five-star (Mon 10:35am)

Multiple sources on both the OU side and the Denton Ryan side have informed me in recent days that Oklahoma is on top for Ty Haywood. I was surprised to hear this because the elite 2025 OL has not visited OU in over seven months (Sooners under the Stars in late July was his last trip), but even so, it sounds like Bill Bedenbaugh and Oklahoma have set the tone in this recruitment. The big question now is whether the Sooners can stay on top, as Texas and Texas A&M are hot on their heels. To that point, Haywood did choose to attend the Aggies’ junior day on Jan. 27 instead of Oklahoma’s. However, the current expectation is that Haywood will be back in Norman for the spring game on Apr. 20.

He’s the nation’s No. 16 overall player in today’s Rivals250 update. Similar to Lamont Rogers and Michael Fasusi, I’m nowhere near FutureCast territory with Haywood, because I’m just not confident enough (yet) that this lead holds. But at the very least, I figured I’d pass along the positive buzz.
