1. How good does it feel to be back in the midst of pig skin season again. Co V definitely brought a different flavor to the game as the defense definitely played much more sound. Strong tackling. No crazy mental busts. Lots of knock back tackles and moving the qb off the spot and getting sacks. Lots to improve upon but no way we get started without paying homage to Co V and him putting his stamp on the culture of the team
2. DG played solid. He definitely looks the part and had a solid week one. He missed a few throws and took a few sacks, game 1 went well though. He spun it with confidence and proved his legs can be a weapon. Looking forward to see if he can have the moxy needed to make a play or throw when it's needed. Today, I have faith he will.
3. Rb by committee was good. Gray played well. Majors was physical and got into the endzone twice, but I liked the BURST Barnes showed as well. Hes going to be an animal in a year or so, but today 0 and 24 make for a solid one..two punch. We'll see if they have true home run ability but they definitely got the job done today.
4. Oline was up and down. I loved seeing us lean on the defense and just decide to take 4 to 6 yards when we wanted to. The leakage in the middle concerned me in the pass game concerns me. Congel concerns me as well. Not as physical as needed and was beat his fair share.
5. Wrs were solid. I'm still seeking a true #1. Someone who will just beat his man and go get the rocks. DG missed open guys a few times but overall they've got to continue to fight. Mims made a big play and it looked good to see Wease shake a guy off and get loose for a 20 plus yard play. We'll see how they fair down the road.
6. Dline - salute to Grimes and downs for playing well rushing the passer. I expect them to win at least a few times a game...a piece. That said...we are soft in the middle Ellison made a few plays. It was good to see Redmond out there, but man do we need someone to step up and take control of the 3 or 0 tech in this defense. Again...solid win, but we'll be looking to see who the Alpha of the bunch is. Especially at tackle.
7. Backers - 28 came to play. Form tackles in the hole always make me smile. 28 showed great awareness with getting a few tips...jumping into windows and playing fast. Kids only going to get better. DU flashed but still showed that he's thinking instead of reacting when his first key isn't extremely direct. Again, he looks as though he's lost weight. Kid plays hard (phenomenal play on the sac) and will continue to get better. I still see him "thinking" and moving slow then he should be moving instinctual. 23 vs 37...something to continue to watch
8. I'm huge huge fan of both 0 and 5. Talk about doing your job and well...consistently. Bowman is the high safety we've been missing a long time. I look forward to seeing him wreak havoc in the run and pass game. I'm also excited bcuz we will again see safeties line up to play here because the safety is used as a true chess piece and not just a safety valve. Btw...he also looks the part in the return game. He didn't do anything major but you could tell he wanted to mix it up and wasn't scared. Woodi...hes a dude. Proly the best true cb we've had in 5 to 10yrs. I look forward to him continuing to dominate. 4 was sound and tackled well. 9 splitting reps means there's depth. 25 played winning football and the rest of the bunch was solid. I was hoping for more meaningful snaps for 37 but I liked seeing him make strong tackles and be active.
9. Scheme - I like that we didn't show a ton but gave our schedule a little to think about. We blitzed, disguised, played man and bluffed a bunch. Beauty is...it was just the tip of the ice berg. We didn't have any huge mental busts aside from a few run fits. We also played aggressive at the LOS and won our fair share of 1 v 1 plays along the line.
10. BWise said 9 would lead us on TDs. If that's the case, we either have a version of a kittle/kelce or we are in trouble on the outside. It was good to see him score and be a presence. Id also add...Coleman in Nebraska had to notice and our other recruits got to see lots of opportunities for pups to come in and make an impact...salute Gentry for a late pick and Kanak for playing with his hair on fire. Btw...Byrds "hold" on Barnes td was not a hold. He punched and was basically grabbed by the defender. Point is...thus brand of ball is sexy for recruits.
Overall...about what was expected. I had hoped we wouldn't give up a td but by in large we played winning football and imposed our will.
Next week I expect 50 and everyone to play.
