Feel like maybe this was in the works for after next season and Bob got to thinking now was a good time. That Lincoln Riley is taking over with, what seems, without question, leads me to believe Stoops and Oklahoma felt like now was the time for Lincoln to hit the ground running in year one with a quarterback like Baker, an experienced defense, and an easy Big XII schedule to ease transition.

Oklahoma and we fans owe Coach Stoops much gratitude. Enjoy the sweet life with the family Mr. Stoops but...

...good luck Head Coach Riley and Boomer Sooner!

YOU CAN'T HAVE OUR STOOPS.

I'm not sure he's on a shortlist to be honest. I think Riley can & will instill some energy into the program. With HC changes, especially one that has been around as long as Bob has, one can expect some other changes to follow quickly.

Mike Stoops is the first that has to go. His loyalty was his brother not Riley. I hope he does the right thing and tenders his resignation. But I don't see it happening.

First time since 1963 that OU has had a coach who left to retire on his own accord....Wilkinson and now Stoops.
Fairbanks retired from OU, but he had the Patriots calling and with a probation facing OU.

I believe Stoops told his staff months ago and therefore pulled off what should be a relatively smooth transition.
Riley has just received a monster salary increase, recruiting is going well and the 2017 class is in place, there's a new $2.25 million dollar home in Chicago waiting for Stoops and the softball team won a national championship yesterday. Everything seemed to be lined up for an easy changing of the guard.
Unlike Wilkinson in 1963, OU is getting a very capable young replacement. Gomer Jones was a great assistant for Wilkinson, but just couldn't motivate his players, much like Gary Gibbs under Switzer.
My biggest question is how....or if....the staff will be impacted.

IMO, Bob isn't going anywhere right away, except to see his Twin Sons complete their Norman North Athletic Careers...It had to be tough on him missing their games...

Can't recall a successful head coach at a major university retiring two months before fall practice. Why now? You would think he would have retired in January 2017 or 2018, not in June. If Riley wanted to make coaching changes, how difficult would that be and what affect would it have on new signees? I'm shocked.

I'm hearing it is health related, even though Berry Trammel's article said it isn't.
If it is, I'm sure we'll hear it direct from Bob in the next few days.

Perhaps it's a stretch, but maybe he was waiting until the incoming class enrolled. Again, not sure. But this class had a huge early enrollment. In any case, Riley has been officially announced as the new Oklahoma HC. I wish him the best. I'm concerned as many others in regards to the defense. I don't see losing any offensive recruits, but defensive recruits, it'll be interesting.

Speaking of interesting, the next RRS will be a big, big game as far as recruits in Texas. Two new HCs. One at UT and one at OU. Things just got interesting again.

He has spoken. He states he has no health issues.

“After 18 years at the University of Oklahoma, I've decided to step down as the head football coach. I understand there has been some speculation about my health. My health was not the deciding factor in this decision and I've had no incidents that would prevent me from coaching. I feel the timing is perfect to hand over the reins. The program is in tremendous shape. We have outstanding players and coaches and are poised to make another run at a Big 12 and national championship. We have new state-of-the-art facilities and a great start on next year's recruiting class. The time is now because Lincoln Riley will provide a seamless transition as the new head coach, capitalizing on an excellent staff that is already in place and providing familiarity and confidence for our players. Now is simply the ideal time for me and our program to make this transition.

“The Bible says, "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." I'm grateful for this season of my life, and feel I've fulfilled my purpose here at OU as its head football coach.

“I'm thankful that my career at Oklahoma was marked with consistent leadership in President David Boren and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione. It's extremely rare in college athletics to have no change in these leadership positions over a nearly 20-year span. I always appreciated the way both of them supported me and our program. They both played an enormous role in all our successes.

“I have been very fortunate to have such outstanding coaches in my time at OU. Our players have always benefitted from their strong leadership, on and off the field. I was also blessed with a strong support staff — strength and conditioning, equipment, sports medicine, academics, video — every aspect of our program was staffed with very talented people who took a great deal of pride in making Oklahoma football the best.

“I'm especially thankful for being able to coach so many talented young men over my 18 years here. It has been so rewarding to see these players come to OU and mature over a four or five-year career, and not just on the field. To play a small part in their growth is what I will always cherish the most.

None of my success would have happened without the best fans in the country. I can't tell you how much I appreciated the 110 consecutive home sellouts. The passion of our fan base is unmatched, and their support has played a huge role in not only home games, but road games and all 18 of our bowl games, as well.

“Lastly, I'd like to thank my wife, Carol, and my daughter, Mackie, and my sons, Drake and Isaac. They have been a major part of this success. Being the wife or child of a coach is often tough, and they've all been strong through both good times and challenging times.

“The coaching life is like a relay race and I'm thankful for my turn and am confident as I pass the baton. Carol and I intend on staying in Norman — it is our home. I will be available to Coach Riley and the athletic department in any manner. Thank you all for a lifetime of memories we shared together of 10 conference championships, the 2000 national championship, strong relationships with players and coaches, and the great Oklahoma football fans. Boomer!”

Ya I just got the news on my phone a little while ago. WOW talk about coming out of nowhere!! Been getting the feeling Stoops may hang it up in the next handful of years, but never expected it to come this summer.

I'm guessing the changer over to Riley will occur this summer and Stoops is retired effective immediately??

Or is this going to be an announcement that 2017 will be Bob's last season??

I need to hop over to the pay board and get the scoop.....

I certainly hope that's not the case. He is still a relatively young man, but frankly, that's the first thing that came to mind. Please don't let be a health issue.

I think Stoops, Riley and the entire staff decided......1, to make the announcement in June....and 2, to keep the current coaches on hand at least through the 2017 season.
In other words, this move was carefully planned well in advance to insure a seamless transition by the coaches and the administration and maybe it was scheduled to be announced a week or two ago, but the softball playoffs may have pushed this move back until the playoffs ended.

Some are questioning the timing of it all. It could be that Riley was hired as his replacement and they were just waiting to see how that would pan out. A lot of people were wanting Stoops gone a while back so maybe he had decided when he hired Riley that he wanted to step down but wanted to make sure he left the program in capable hands since he put so much of his life into building it back to where it is now. He obviously has a lot of love for OU so it would not be surprising that he would make sure its in good hands before he retired. He has a lot of praise for Riley so perhaps he was grooming him for this day. He goes out on his terms and also hand picked his replacement. I can totally see that happening. Just my opinion of course.

Does Riley replace himself or will he continue calling plays? I hope so. Anyway, there is at least one opening on the OU coaching staff as of today. My brother just called me and said he heard there will be a presser today at 5:30. I'm sure it will be televised.
