Recruiting day thoughts

That'd be about 13 to 14 more years than me. I don't think I'll even make it to 72 to be honest. Such as it is, I'm constantly updating, adjusting, and working on the bucket list.

I hope to be shot to death by a jealous husband on my 93rd birthday.

When I read of OU-Nebraska scheduling two games in 2029-30....and I'm 67 now (I will be in my early 80's then)....it makes me wonder if I will see another national championship for OU. I have little confidence that OU can pull off another championship given its Big 12 membership, the increased difficulty of Texas recruiting (now that the SEC has increased its presence there, in addition to the rise of Baylor, TCU and Houston as well as a resurgence by Texas).
At this time, it appears very likely that the 2020 game with Army at West Point will be my last OU game to attend. West Point is 2 hours from my house.
Of course, that all "depends".

Good point by Tulsan: through all the rhetoric we hear about OU "raiding" Texas for high school talent, we never hear about how the legacy of Texas football since 1957 was made possible by Darrell Royal (an Oklahoman and OU All American).
To belittle OU for recruiting in Texas is silly and very lame. Does that mean that all high school boys must play college ball in their home state ? Utter nonsense. Not even Alabama could have the success it has if it only recruited instate.

Oklahoma has had 5 Heisman trophy winners but only 1 from Texas. You look at Baylor's recruiting this is the first time in 5 yrs they made the top 20 in recruiting. Alabama, Mississippi and LSU took a lot of the top Texas players. I think the SAE incident made it easy to negative recruit against OU. The coaches have to recruit players that are receptive. You go where you have to go. Texas is just a big state with lots of high school players. I don't really trust what's going on in Texas. Looking like the SWC with this recruiting of late.

They project by 2040 that Hispanics will be the majority populace in Texas. Remember the Alamo. I love San Antonio it's a cool place and I love Mexican food so who cares. Besides that I'll be dead.

Depending where you are in the state, they already are... which is fine by me, I just don't understand Spanish so well...

No, incoherent. Meaning my brain won't care what's going on around me. Unable to comprehend. Old, useless and not cared about, except by somebody with the same affliction. And maybe their children will be helpful.

But I'd be very surprised to make it to 88 or 89.

Me too, 2088 is a long way off...

I guess me mentioning that name on the stadium in Austin being that of an OU All American went right over your head... or the post about Uterus needing a coach with ties to OU in order to win a NC...

Of course, you probably have me on ignore... one reason I ignore no one, it gets in the way of those facts...

I thought you were older than 16, but it would explain a lot.

I could have sworn I saw you play Pony League 25 years ago. Give or take.

==========

Oops. Do I need to delete that?

Haha, more like 30-32 years ago. Yet not surprised... you might have been the umpire I drilled with a cut fastball in Colt league... our regular catcher was out... send coach Tuck my regards...

Coach Tuck was a good guy, but we have very few conversations. When I was working for the little paper in Plano, Maxie was the varsity baseball coach. So I seldom interviewed Tuck. But he knew that I was coaching a lot of kids and offered to give my oldest a free hitting lesson, which he took. But I didn't love his philosophy and my oldest didn't want to go back. I think I talked to Coach Tuck maybe a dozen times, until I was coaching in PSA football when Terry's oldest was in the league. He'd been a pretty big time baseball player in hs and maybe college. Made AAA in the minors, but I don't think he is in the MLB player registry. Still, he knew his baseball and had a good demeanor for a high school coach.

Have no idea where he is these days.

He was. I don't know where he ran off to, either. I played for him and he definitely knew his baseball, had been a pro scout as well. A pretty good guy, even if he did make me cut my hair...:(

What would Texas be if it wasn't for the Oklahoma coaches they've gotten through the years? ;)

OU would have never been successful if not for coaches from Minnesota, Arkansas and Iowa. And referring that Mack Brown was an OU coach is pushing the evelope since he only coached at OU for a year.

As you might be as well, I'm wired now that a lot of stimulus' will remind me of a song.
This time it was:

Pretty good oldie from the fabulous 70s.

Yet he referenced his time at OU as the job that got him recognized as a HC candidate.

Regardless, in the land of Whorndom, an OU All American's name is on their stadium. That's a fact.

So what. He was the same guy that snubbed OU when the school asked to discuss leaving Texas to come coach OU when Bud hung it up. So Gomer was named head coach. Edit. Actually Royal turned down the job after Gomer resigned. Jim MacKenzie was hired after Vince Dooley declined to interview and stayed at Georgia.

Why would a guy who just won a national title leave that school? I know he played at OU, but he had a recruiting advantage that could never be replicated at OU in that time frame.

I understand, Plaino and that's okay. But Royal became a jerk once he got to Texas. I never cared for him and liked the way he left college football 5-5-1, 52 years old and kicked in the ass by Barry Switzer. On second thought Royal did OU a big favor. By snubbing the Sooners he changed OU football history for the better.

Well since DKR ordered Emory Bellard to give OU all the details of their wishbone, because the staff was about to get fired. He didn't have to do that. He shouldn't have done it. He made Barry look like a genius, when he really wasn't. Bellard had meticulously done the geometry to make the timing perfect.

We even put the form chart for the spacing on the practice field painted on astroturf to get it perfect. So having that sort of ill will to Royal might be a little unfair. If I were him, I'd have been really peeved, given that, when OU spied on his practice in '72.

I never believed that, but OU players younger than me, joked about knowing what was coming on the quick kick that turned the game around.

Oh my... although I did, and didn't like it one bit. Saw CSN a few times. Always an excellent show.

I was referring to Mack Brown. He didn't snub OU. One year under Switzer propelled him to being HC material.

That still doesn't change the fact that DKR, whether a traitor or not, was an OU All American.

Actually...was referring to Darrell Royal...and it was a jab/joke...an old one with Horn fans. ;)
