Baker has a genuine chance to become the third OU quarterback to win a Heisman. Seriously. If OU wins out, Baker will most likely be a big reason. If that happens, Baker has as good a chance of winning the Heisman as OU has to get into the playoffs. Wouldn't you think including a team with a Heisman Trophy quarterback just might be worth a few votes? Hell yeah!

Timing is of the essence, Okla...Heisman Trophy is awarded early in December...That needs to happen BEFORE the 'BS' Committee announces their picks...

I haven't even looked into what names are being thrown around for Heisman contention at all this season. Is Baker getting any attention at all?? When in 2000 did Heupel start to get attention for the award?? I'm assuming it was later in the year as well. So it's not impossible for Baker to make a late season run to get invited to NYC if he really has some monster performances that lead to wins in the next few games.

Heupel's Heisman considerations started in Red October. In fact, he was the frontrunner at the end of October.
It was actually his sub-par performances (fighting through injury) in November that actually allowed Weinke to surpass him, as Weinke was putting up video game numbers in November.

Good point. If we win out, Baker's stock will rise relative to Heisman discussion and it certainly wouldn't hurt our chances with the Committee, if necessary.

If we win out and there's any question on the surface if we are deserving of making the playoff, we REALLY need support from the computer polls with SOS and "style" points via our Defense to help mute the talking heads that are being critical of the B12's lack thereof. I think the former will take care of itself and "hope" the latter does.

While I wish all the best for Baker...I'm afraid he might have to wait and campaign for the Heisman as a Sr.

This Fournette guy at LSU has all the momentum now, and, not to mention Baker is not on any watch list.
Good for Baker if he can muster some buzz about it but, trying to keep it real.

Edit: The above bovine excrement was before that freak show he did at Baylor...I thinks he wins it.

If Baker wins out, I would think he surpasses Fournette... maybe.
In the last 10 years, a RB has only won the Heisman once... 2009 Mark Ingram
The other 9 are QBs.

But if Clemson wins out.... I think Deshaun Watson will be the leader.

If OU wins out and Baker shines in the next three games, then he is definitely in the conversation. With LSU losing to Bama this weekend, Fournette may have dropped a little as Henry at Bama and Elliott and tOSU are the front runners until one of them loses.

At this time, Baker isn't on the radar yet. But his stats are great: 70% completion rate; 300+ yards a game average; 28 TDs vs only 4 ITs; on pace to throw 37 and for more than 3700 yards; plus he is exciting to watch and has run for over 200 yards. I don't remember how many rushing TDs he's had but enough to be considered if he can keep performing and OU can keep winning. If the Sooners beat Baylor and TCU AND O-State is still undefeated when we go to Stillwater, that will be a prime time game and perhaps even Game Day. Yep, all the stars have to be in line and the current front runners need to have Boykin type games like he had against OSU. The LSU kid is likely out after what Bama did to him. I will be watching Clemson games when they are available for sure. I wasn't sure that Baker could do the job 2 months ago, but I admit that I was wrong big time....no matter how Baker plays the rest of the year.

Actually, I saw his name/picture on a "watch list" before last week's game telecast, and if I recall he was on a few lists prior to the RRS. Below is the only "recent" site I found where he's listed, but certainly not as reputable as some of the bigger SEC-finances news sources...like ESPN. ;)

He hasn't been in any of the Top 5 lists, but I've seen him on every Top 10 list. He comes in around #8, and that was before this last weekend. With a couple of those guys falling, I think Mayfield is probably at about #6 right now.

I guess my research has been suspect.
All I've seen is the top five guys...FWIW.

Might want to check out that one, Oklabama...My info' says they'll be at OUr game, in Waco...

Oklabama - I think Mayfield has a chance if we win out. I've heard national guys saying that Fournette and Boykin's chances took a huge hit and that the winner may be a darkhorse coming out of the shadows over the next 3 weeks. I've heard the names of Mayfield, Peppers (Michigan) and Clemson's QB (can't remember his name at this moment (where's that fish oil again? ) as candidates.

Not a lot of OU/Mayfield media coverage comparatively considering the constant Alabama LSU rah rah. Hopefully if Baker continues to play well he garnish some national attention. There was a time school's public information departments would create hype campaign for their Heisman hopefuls. That's what is needed for Mayfield.

Harold Keith, where are you when we need you? He was the Spin-Master Extraordinaire for Many Years...No one did it better, and he was a Delightful Gentleman, as well!

If you haven't read his '47 Straight', it's Your Loss!

If he does well in Baylor while Game Day is in Waco, he'll get some love and the talk will start big time. Then again if he freezes up and can't handle this type of pressure, it won't be a good thing. I think he steps up. He definitely believes in himself. The guy is super confident and appears to be able to handle pressure.

I'd be pretty confident too if I were surrounded by Mixon, Perine, Shepard, Andrews, Westbrook, Neal, and Baxter.

Maybe next year but the Bama and LSU hype machine got going way to early this year.... Its Henry or Fournette

You make a good point but all it takes is one or two bad games to go from front runner to the middle of the pack. Fournette loss ground and so did Boykin Saturday. Candidates have to keep performing. Same goes for Baker. He has to continue producing at the same pace and keep winning games.

Im voting everyday, share with any Sooner FB groups your in. Whether he wins or loses he I feel he deserves to be mentioned. I dont feel we would be in this position with any other QB on the team.

Derrick Henry may be a beast (size and strength) but is not a complete back. He's a downhill runner that cant cut. He's only had 8 catches for 69 yards and his blocking is only average and is 5th in total yards rushing behind that massive OL.

Its a shame that Matt Johnson QB from Bowling Green isnt even in the Heisman discussion. More yards than Boykin and with 33 TDs to only 3 ints.

Heisman voting is becoming a popularity contest..much like the polls.

And you have to play for a top 10 or better team. Do you think Steve Owens would have won in 1969 on a 6-4 Sooner team if things had been the way they are now back then? No way.

I was always under the impression that only Heisman winners could actually vote for a Heisman. Perhaps they get the final vote.

BTW, I voted for him as well.

He has "IT" and he can out duel a 4-5 star freshman with the help of a couple of 4-5 star RBs, IMO.

WNAS, all the Heisman winners have a vote, but the sports media makes up the vast majority of the voting. I don't know how they are selected but it's a even number from four regions of the country to keep it fair. As it can be.

Henry is a 6'3" 245 RB, kinda tall for NFL. NFL better backs around 6'0" 225. OSU ran on them last year with Elliot.

870 media reps from the 6 regions plus prev Heisman winners

What we did was NOMINATE Mayfield. I'm assuming that if he gets enough votes, then his name will be in one of the boxes, as the others who are on the Heisman 'Watch List' are. Where we had to type in his info', their names were already there...Just Click and Vote. I have no idea at what point Baker may get a box, but it is interesting to participate, and be a part of the process...

I went to vote, earlier, today, and a message told me that I had voted for Baker Mayfield, and could vote again in 13 hours. I just tried, again, and it told me 3 hours until I could vote. Nice Feature!
I'm posting this to bump this thread and to encourage Every One to Vote Every Day!

By my math, you were trying to vote for Baker at 4:45am. YOU, my friend, are a true Sooner.
