Football Mini-Midweek Mailbag: NiJaree Canady buzz, Samuel Omosigho's potential

In this mailbag, I discuss the Canady buzz, call my shot on Omosigho and also give thoughts on Josh Bates and the Dallas Cowboys (sigh).

Thanks again to everyone for the questions.

Football Will Oklahoma hit the over on its 7.5-win total in 2024?

Expectations are lower than usual in Norman as Oklahoma enters its first year in the SEC.

The Sooners' preseason win total of 7.5 is the lowest that we've seen in years, but will they hit the over?

OU NIL, Coaches - recruiting/development rankings

NIL
134 D1 FBS Teams
So on a 1worst - 10best scale every 13.4 would be a number drop.
On a straight ranking Oklahoma NIL is #11 with $14,817,595 on a 1-10 scale it would be a 10.
uterusU $22,272,474
Ohio State $20,253,400
LSU $20,137,142
Georgia $18,326,566
aTm $17,228,714
Michigan $16,357,054
Bama $15,995,406
Florida $15,802,237
Clemson $15,258,374
OU $14,817,595
Penn State $13,793,489
Indiana $13,631,160

The top 5 noticably stand above the rest as elite. Anybody got an extra 7.5 laying around (every year)? Keep in mind these schools have to share these funds across multiple sports.

Coaches (opinion)

First year on staff and Venables already had the room looking right. He can easily improve his rankings.

Basketball Loaded batch of notes as Peach Jam approaches

Login to view embedded media Since his official visit, I've received more intel on Jaylon Dean-Vines. First of all, he still seems to be listening to the wrong people, and the feeling with the Sooners is that they may have their claws in him deeper than imagined. However, the kid himself has a ton of interest in Oklahoma, but things are in a holding pattern as the Sooners try to figure out their roster plans. What’s confusing is that during the visit, Dean-Vines wasn’t super talkative, which makes his high interest in Oklahoma a bit puzzling. I expect next week to be significant for Dean-Vines, as teams like Oklahoma, Memphis, and Louisville will be watching him closely. If Memphis likes what they see, they will offer him and get a visit. I would also expect Arizona State to get a visit, should they like what they see.

To simplify, Dean-Vines took his visit and wasn’t very talkative. After the visit, he expressed extremely high interest in the Sooners. Oklahoma is also in a holding pattern as they figure out their roster plans moving forward. Both Oklahoma and Memphis will watch Dean-Vines closely at Peach Jam. If Memphis offers, they’ll be tough to beat, and sources wouldn’t be surprised if he committed on that visit. As for a timeline, he will be done in August.

Login to view embedded media The Sooners have remained heavily involved with Kaidon Rayfield, who hails from Oklahoma. Along with Oklahoma, LSU is very involved. Texas A&M, Minnesota, and SMU will all watch him closely at Peach Jam, along with Oklahoma and LSU. I also believe there is a ton of interest in Oklahoma from Rayfield’s perspective.

Login to view embedded media Brock Morris and the Sooners have been in contact with Denmark native and seven-footer Andreas Holst. The Sooners are heavily interested and need a big in 2025, which they mentioned to Holst. Oklahoma is very interested here.

Login to view embedded media Winters Grady will visit Oklahoma in September, but being from Eugene, the Ducks, who will get an official visit on October 12th, will be extremely tough to beat.

As for Jeremiah Fears, which I’m sure you are all wondering about, I’ll have more soon, but no visits from Fears until after Peach Jam, which ends on the 21st.

The complaining about OL recruiting?

Forgive me as I am still re-familiarizing myself with the tone of this board? Is there good reason for this much of an uproar about one OL recruitment that did not go OU’s way?

Fodge is an elite tackle and Darius Afalava is the number 1 player in UT. I see Owen Hollenbeck as a future two or three year starter for the Sooners. Besides. Fasusi and Babaloa are still uncommitted. Rogers is clearly very good but I guess I just can not understand why there is so much hate for Coach Bedenbaugh about one OL that picked a different university.

It is one geezer’s opinion but I have been watching OU football for nearly 50 years and I believe Coach Bedenbaugh is the best OL coach the program has had. I believe the players who do choose OU are far more important than the players who do not.

The beginning of a strong 5-7 year run

Looking at the roster and the early projection of two deep, I honestly believe that 2024/25 may mark the beginning of a strong 5-7 year run for the Sooners. While I continue to believe that this season will be be something along the lines of 9-3/8-4, I also think it will mark the beginning of the Sooner’s evolution to being a stout defensive team with a good offense - as opposed to an explosive offensive team and a laughable defense. On paper, this OU team looks A LOT like Clemson the year before they played for consecutive NCs. There is quality and depth across the board on D, a QB with a really high ceiling, lots of skill position talent and some uncertainty along the OL. If they follow the Clemson trajectory, the D will keep them firmly in every game while the O struggles for consistency early but finds its stride in the back half of the season. I sense that OU will miss the playoff but be a team that nobody wants to face in a bowl game and Top 5 preseason next year. Nobody is really talking about it yet, but Alley is going to make a huge difference in having a defense that is well prepared and highly multiple. He is aggressive and high energy. BV was having to do too much with Roof and Lebby both experiencing some poor outings.

I’d anticipate Sooner fans in full meltdown at the halfway point and fully bought in by the end of the season.
