The Choctaw Casino & Resort's Unofficial 40 podcast is in mid-season form as the entire crew is here to talk about the scandal in Phoenix. Spencer Rattler was suspended for the rest of the season. What do we know and will any of this affect his future at OU? Kansas State is also headed to town and we're wondering if this is another physical test the Sooners will struggle with on defense. We have your Coop Ale Works Players to Watch as well as breaking down what the Sooners will need from the running back position with Trey Sermon likely to miss the game this weekend. We also take you on the recruiting trail recapping our trip to see Trejan Bridges over the weekend and what's ahead for Lincoln Riley and the Sooners.

Latest on Chris Steele...

According to a source, one of the reasons that Steele has decided to back off his pledge to USC is how the Bubba Bolden situation was handled internally and at the university-level.

The five-star cornerback from Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco and Bolden have been close for a while and Steele has watched that situation unfold in recent weeks. With Bolden no longer enrolled in school, Steele felt that situation was not dealt with properly and gave him some concern over his own commitment.

According to the person I talked to, the Steele family is still "pro-USC" and "loves USC" but is also encouraging the five-star cornerback to do what he feels is best for his own future.

Three schools have seemingly emerged as serious players: Florida, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Playing in the SEC and playing on the biggest stage has always appealed to Steele and according to the person I spoke with this morning, the five-star is very impressed with the DB tradition there and the job Todd Grantham is doing with the defense.

Oklahoma has always been a top school for Steele and he is close with Brendan Radley-Hiles among others so being tested in the pass-happy Big 12 would be a factor. Steele and Oregon assistant coach Donte Williams have had a great relationship for years. That will be something to watch.

The person I spoke with who's close to the Steele family wanted to make it clear that there is no love lost for USC and the coaching staff. But it is a situation where the five-star CB did not feel comfortable being committed there any longer and wants to consider other options, too.

The field in FW this weekend is likely

To be a muddy mess.

It hard rained 9 of the last 10 days in the DFW area. Since September 1st, we have officially recorded 23 inches of rain. And it's going to rain more the next 2.5 days.

Our annual average is a liitle over 28 inches. The ground everywhere is totally saturated and unlikely to improve before kickoff.

In fact, the first sunshine in over a week is supposed to appear during the game.

I hope our guys remember LR's admonition about ball protection. Good news is that very little if any rain expected during the game.

If More Changes to 2019 Defensive Staff

One name to consider is Bryan Brown, the DC at Appalachian State. Brown coaches CBs and has for the last 5 years. Apparently his CBs (as opposed to DBs) have 30 ints in 3 years. OU CBs have 30 in the last 6 years (half of those by Sanchez). Brown is likely making about $150-175K per year. He is 34 years old and is originally from Mississippi and Ole Miss.
Brown as a potential Co-DC here and coaching CBs might be a huge change for us in 19.

Interim DC tag note UPDATE 10:59 pm

Heard from a very good source tonight that Bob Diaco is not likely to receive the interim DC tag.

I asked if it would be Ruffin instead and source said it wasn't known at this time. But can confirm Diaco not a likely candidate.

UPDATE:

Got a call just moments ago saying decision was still being made. It's likely to be Ruffin, but nothing official has been decided. There have been several reports out there but other than Diaco not being the likely interim, that's all I can report with 100% accuracy because nothing was finalized tonight.

I think there are some things the athletic department is wanting to rubber stamp before all this goes down.

Brian Bosworth Spoke the Truth loudly 2-3 years ago...

and got black balled, yelled at, etc. He was right then and he's still right, he's just tired of fighting the kiss Stoops ass 24/7 BS. Now Dmackey13 has stated the same and the obvious. Dmack played for these Stoops, but he bit his tongue and gave too much rope to both Stoops because of loyalty. Our eyes have not been lying to us. Bob and Riley didn't listen to Boz and it likely cost us Natty #8 last year!

Might There Be a Reason OU hasn't Named a New DC?

Everyone is assuming it will be someone on staff and at the end of the year, they'll hire someone outside the program.

But.

What if they're looking RIGHT NOW for the guy -- someone in another program and they want to get him hired in the next few days?

Just think it's a distinct possibility. And if that's the case, who would they be looking at?

LR won’t fire Mike because it will end Mike’s career

Firing Mike wouldn’t be easy for anyone, but especially not for Lincoln since he was Bob’s hand-picked successor. But it will be even more difficult because Mike will become untouchable in major college football after being fired. His reputation as a tone deaf coach who is not a good Xs and Os coach, has no self control, and no respect from the players will make unsuitable elsewhere. Firing him at OU will effectively end his college coaching career, unless he’s willing to coach outside of the Power 5 conferences.
