Pete Golding/DC scuttlebutt...

...Hearing it from way too many different avenues that there is legitimate smoke to OU hiring Alabama co-DC Pete Golding to take over as Sooners defensive coordinator.

Sometimes one source/media outlet says something, and then everybody jumps on the bandwagon. So then it appears like everybody is hearing the same thing when in reality you're just trusting the word of one person.

This, though? This feels different. This is coming from about three or four different wavelengths that usually don't intersect. So either everyone is WANTING to believe it's true... or it's pretty damn close to actually being true.

I told ya I didn't think it'd happen before early signing period (Dec. 19-21). But if Lincoln Riley and OU know their guy on Nov. 18 and Golding wants to make that leap to full DC and not co-DC, it won't take a month to get it accomplished.

There's no social media signs yet, but obviously that doesn't tell the whole story:

He's young... but so was Riley. Maybe?

What was your FIRST ever Oklahoma Football game you attended?

I wanted to start this thread because I would LOVE to see who went to the oldest game that’s on this board. I know some guys are in their 70s so I would guess we at least have some who went to some games in the 50s.

Mine wasn’t very old obviously as I’m only 29, but my first game was when I was 11. I went to the 2000 Season opener against UTEP. I went with my dad. I have never loved a sporting event more in my life then I did that day. I watched Ronaldo Works look like Superman and carry the entire UTEP team into the endzone. My dad bought me a foam finger that I still have to this day. My dad and I sat beside 2 men that looked just like Santa and everyone around me high fived each other the entire game.

The crowd was packed out and we hadn’t even won 10 games in over a decade. That’s why I know our fan base is the best. I was addicted to the environment. I remember it getting dark and them turning on the lights and it was a nice cool summer evening. One day when my dad passes that will be a day that I talk about at his funeral. What an amazing night that was as my Sooner Fandom was born and my blood turned to crimson.

When was your first game?

I’m embarrassed for us going fwd

Does anyone think with this sh_t show of a defense we can win the next two games? Our defense is DISGUSTING! I spend most
of our games laughing at the idiocy of what I watch on the defensive side of the ball. Riley is being pulled out of his play calling rhythm trying to protect the defense. He better get this shit straight

What were you all expecting

I do get being frustrated but nothing is going to change until the offseason. Everybody is talking about LR being the next great one. Now all of a sudden he may not be good enough to be the coach at OU. Give me a damn break. By reading this thread some of you should apply, you seem to have it all figured out. I can take anything you dish so bring it, you are just being crybabies. Until he makes his hire and that coach changes the culture of the D, it is what it is. If you expected more that’s on you. Firing coaches mid season is always tough on any program, these are kids, they lost a mentor, the guy who brought them to OU for many of them. Win however you have to win. That’s all that really matters the rest of this season, try to enjoy it, it’s almost over. Boomer Sooner!

The Tech game was a gift...

I am glad we won. I am not undervaluing that win; we had to overcome some huge mistakes for that W. However, any drumbeat of "Take the Interim Tag" off of Coach Ruff, and make him full time DC, was drowned in a tidal wave of truth last night. We knew that Tech would be a test for our D. We took the test and just barely passed, but I think that the transitional defensive staff was pretty much exposed.

Now let's go get us a Class-A defensive coordinator!

Same problems resurface for OU defense

LUBBOCK, Texas – This was the test. No other way to slice it. Oklahoma’s game at Texas Tech was going to determine what real differences have been made in the Sooners defense since the dismissal of former defensive coordinator Mike Stoops.

Under interim coordinator Ruffin McNeill, OU had posted back-to-back quality outings, but the Red Raiders are in another league compared to TCU and Kansas State.

Those problems that were clear to see in the 48-45 loss to Texas? They’re still there, and OU is still a work in progress with big holes to plug in a 51-46 victory Saturday evening.

“Yea, night didn’t go the way we wanted it to. But you know it’s not new around here,” linebacker Curtis Bolton said. “It’s back to work on Monday, try to fix what we can fix. We’ve got a lot of things to fix.

“I think there’s some facets to the game we did really well, but we’ve got to kill out the penalties and big plays. They’re not easy fixes but they’re manageable. We’re gonna get back on the film, get back into Norman and go back.”

The first half did nothing to inspire confidence that the Sooners (8-1 overall, 5-1 Big 12) are worthy to be mentioned in the college football playoff picture. OU allowed 31 points, 289 yards, and it looked like it could be another long, strange night in Lubbock.

The Sooners, however, did create their own break. True freshman quarterback Alan Bowman, who had completed 21 of 26 passes for 227 yards with two touchdowns, was injured in the final minutes of the first half on a jarring hit by Bolton.

With Jett Duffey in for Bowman in the second half, the game changed dramatically. It wasn’t always pretty, but OU only allowed 184 yards and 15 points in the second half.

FIDO – Forget It and Drive On,” sophomore safety Robert Barnes said. “Everybody says defense wins championships. We have our offense’s back. I go into our locker room before every game and tell every player on offense that we got your back. We got your back. Just forget it and drive on. Let’s do it.”

Barnes had arguably the biggest play of the game midway through the fourth quarter. Texas Tech had scored to make it 42-40 for the Sooners when Barnes intercepted the two-point conversion and took it all the way back to give OU a 44-40 advantage.

A win is a win and keeps the Sooners relevant, but it’s clear that not all the warts just went away by changing coordinators. Tech was still able to have success with its tall receivers with Antoine Wesley and T.J. Vasher combining for 18 catches for 231 yards and a touchdown.

On a night where No. 1 Alabama blanked No. 3 LSU, the Sooners showed they still have a ways to go defensively to be mentioned in that same breath.

But head coach Lincoln Riley believes, hey, there’s still time, and this group is getting better with each week.

“It had a different feel out there on the field to me,” Riley said. “They got some things, Kliff's a great mind, play caller. They had some really good stuff that gave us trouble, especially in the screen game that we got to be better with. But I thought we zeroed in and obviously played better than the score looks.”

Lots of ranked losses. OU should be pretty easily number 6, Tuesday.
