OU loses final Big 12 Bedlam series in Stillwater, as OSU rallies late

After Oklahoma and Oklahoma State split the first two games in Stillwater on Friday and Saturday, Sunday marked the rubber match that would decide the final Big 12 Bedlam series.

OU came into this one with the momentum after posting a whopping 19-runs on the Cowboys during Saturday's game and there had been a crazy 44-runs posted by the two teams in the series. This one would start much different though, with both teams bullpens being fresh.

The Sooners took on Oklahoma State Sunday at O'Brate Stadium in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Oklahoma was first to bat and despite having two runners get on base, they were unable to put any runners across the plate. Headed to the mound for the Sooners in the bottom of the first was Grant Stevens, who entered the game with a perfect 5-0 record and a 3.33 ERA. Despite giving up a double with only one out, Stevens was quick to escape the first allowing no runs.

Cowboys pitcher Gabe Davis kept his success going in the second, allowing only one batter on and keeping the Sooners scoreless. The bottom of the second is where we saw the first run of the day as OSU struck first. Cowboys led 1-0 after two.

OU's bats would not stay silent. Thanks to a Bryce Madron homer, the game was knotted up at 1s going into the bottom of the third. The game wouldn't stay tied long, as OSU's Carson Benge was able to retake the lead for the Cowboys with a solo home run. OSU led 2-1 after three.

The improved defensive performances continued in the fourth inning. Although both teams would get runners on base, neither could capitalize and the game remained 2-1 after four.

The fifth was when the Oklahoma bats really woke up. The inning started with Jaxon Willits being walked and OSU quickly made a change on the mound. Unlucky for OSU, OU was at the top of their lineup and they did not miss their opportunity to strike. After faking a bunt, Jason Walk gave OU their first lead of the game with a two-run shot into right. The momentum continued, as Jackson Nicklaus was able to send another runner in off a ground-rule double. Oklahoma would end up leading 4-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.

Oklahoma State answered right away, starting the inning off with a double which forced Skip Johnson into the bullpen. Righty Brendan Girton took the mound. Oklahoma State would end up cutting the lead to 4-3 with runners on first and third at only one out, but Girton was able to stop the bleeding and had a tremendous finish to the inning. He allowed no additional runs as OU maintained a 4-3 lead after five.

After both teams found some offense in the fifth, that quickly disappeared. Both lineups would be retired in order in the sixth, keeping OU in the lead.

OSU stayed hot on the mound to start the sixth, forcing Oklahoma into a quick two outs with only one runner on base. In what felt like a needed spark on offense, Michael Snyder launched a two out RBI double into right field, giving OU a 5-3 lead.

Opportunities were running out for OSU. After getting two runners on, Jamie Hitt would replace Girton on the mound. Hitt was not able to survive the inning as the Cowboys' bats caught fire. After giving up a Donovan LaSalle three-run homer, Ryan Lambert would make his way on the mound. Lambert ended up walking the next three batters, forcing yet another change on the mound for OU. Carson Atwood entered and would finish the inning. Oklahoma State was able to take an advantage of a disastrous inning by OU, posting 6-runs and taking a 9-5 lead after seven.

The Sooners' bats needed a big eight and they had the exact opposite, being sat 1-2-3 and not able to cut into the OSU lead. Malachi Witherspoon replaced Atwood on the mound and was able to halt OSU's offensive momentum, keeping the OSU lead at 9-5 going into the ninth.

Despite getting a leadoff single from Jason Walk to start the ninth, Oklahoma was unable to capitalize and Oklahoma State would complete their comeback to win 9-5.

Oklahoma quietly in strong position with a priority CB target in the 2025 cycle

It's really significant that Courtland Guillory elected to come back to Norman this weekend rather than make his maiden voyage to Austin. But here is another corner target with whom Oklahoma is in sneaky good shape. Seaonta Stewart is VERY high on the cornerback board for the Sooner staff.

Sooners' offense struggles as No. 4 Texas ties series with 2-1 victory

"You’re not gonna see us crying and in despair. We’re a team that bounces back really well, and we understood we needed to learn some things as a team in our responses to things that were not like Sooner-like. So we talked a little bit about that. We learned a lot, and we need that."

OU baseball outlast Oklahoma State, ties Stillwater series up

After losing the first game of the final Big 12 Bedlam series on Friday night, OU looked to respond on Saturday afternoon and the Sooners did just that.

Leading the charge for OU on the hill was righty Kyson Witherspoon, who entered this one with a 1.41 ERA on the season and a 2-2 record.

The Oklahoma bats finished the game strong on Friday night and quickly carried that over into Saturday. Both teams were unable to put runs on the board in the first, but the fireworks quickly began in the second.

It was Anthony Mackenzie who started the scoring frenzy for OU, sending a solo shot into deep right to give the Sooners a 1-0 lead in the second. Next at the plate was Michael Snyder, who sent one roaring into left field giving Oklahoma back-to-back homers and a 2-0 lead. The bats were not done yet, with Jackson Nicklaus finding his way to home plate after a double. OU led 3-0 entering the bottom of two.

Oklahoma State's bats were busy in the second as well, with Avery Ortiz delivering a two-run shot to cut the lead to 3-2 and Zach Ehrhard's RBI single to tie it up. As if that was not bad enough, the Cowboys were able to put yet another run in with two outs as a wild pitch put Oklahoma state up 4-3 after two.

The fiery bats stayed on par, with Bryce Madron launching a solo shot into right field to start the third. With the game tied at 4s, Kendall Pettis was able to hit yet another RBI which gave OU a 5-4 lead. Spoiler alert, they were not done yet. Scott Mudler sent a nuke into right field for a three-run shot, which marked the eight homer for OU already this weekend.Sooners led 8-4 going into the bottom of the third.

After forcing two outs and allowing no runs in the inning, Cowboys Avery Ortiz hit his second home run of the day to cut the lead down to 8-6 after three.

If you were hoping for a low scoring game, this was not the one for you. The offense continued to keep their rhythm going in the fourth, with Bryce Madron and Anthony Mackenzie hitting doubles to give OU a 9-6 lead. With OSU having two outs on the board, Jackson Nicklaus was able to send a runner in off an RBI single into right. After a successful challenge by Skip Johnson, Scott Mudler gave the Sooners yet another three-run boost after he sent the ball into deep left that resulted in a single. OU led 13-6 halfway through four. Oklahoma's two out defensive curse would continue as Zach Ehrard hit a solo homer to make it 13-7. Oklahoma would make a change on the mound and righty Carter Campbell closed the inning in the fourth, helping OU escape at 13-7.

OU was unable to keep their momentum in the fifth, with Oklahoma State leaving the inning unscathed. Campbell made quick work of the OSU lineup in an impressive one-two-three inning, helping OU maintain their 13-7 lead going into six.

After an anomaly fifth inning where neither team got it going on offense, OU reignited the home run derby in the sixth. Jaxon Willits launched a three-run homer into right, which gave him his third homer of the weekend and Oklahoma a 16-7 lead. OSU was able to get some offense going as they cut the lead to 16-9 after six.

The derby continued in the seventh, with it being Jackson Nicklaus' turn to launch one into right. His two-run homer gave OU a 18-9 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Despite the big hole, OSU bats were not willing to quit. After putting one run in and making it 18-10, the Cowboys had the bases loaded with two outs. OU would take Campbell off the mound and put Reid Hensley in, who was able to come up clutch and get out of the inning with a 18-10 lead.

Thanks to a 90-minute weather delay, this one went much longer than expected. Oklahoma would end up escaping Saturday with an impressive 19-10 win and tie the series at 1-1.
