Nick Saban NIL comments prompt Tuskegee coach to call for apology, Alabama to schedule every in-state HBCUby Dean StrakaMay 24, 11:22 AM

Tuskegee University head football coach and athletic director Reginald Ruffin called for Alabama football coach Nick Saban to issue an apology to and schedule the HBCUs within the state of Alabama after Saban mentioned Jackson State University during remarks on NIL concerns. HBCU Gameday reports the HBCU football community at large was not pleased with Saban mentioning an HBCU school by name in the form of Jackson State, and Ruffin sees Alabama scheduling in-state HBCU's as acceptable compensation.

Ruffin, via Facebook, proposed a plan in which Alabama plays in-state HBCU's on a rotating basis and pays HBCU schools north of $1 million in the process, according to HBCU Gameday. By the language of Ruffin's post, Auburn would also seemingly be implicated in that plan as a fellow FBS institution in the state.

"Okay everyone, sometimes you say things you don’t really mean and you hurt people or love ones in the process," Ruffin's Facebook post read in part. "Coach Saban shouldn’t have said anything about any other coaches, team, or players. Here’s how we fix this. Coaches rule: only speak about your team. Now Coach Saban, just say you (are) sorry in public and walk down to your AD’s Office and say “We need to play all the FCS HBCU in the state of Alabama because we are the only university in the state not playing the Alabama State’s or Alabama A&M’s in our great state. By the way, you not going to leave Tuskegee University out of it because we are going D1, and yes I said it.

"Each institution will get a guarantee of $1,500,000.00 for playing The University of Alabama on a rotating basis. Also that conversation with the AD on having the HBCUs play all FBS universities on a rotating basis in this state. Each HBCUs will get a guaranteed payday of $3,000,000.00 to $5,000,000.00 each year. This is a game changer. Now you are helping in-state HBCU universities. This is AD Ruffin hat on and now you change up the game for HBCUs at the FCS level in this state. Now, the AD for the University of Alabama and the head football coach Nick Saban will be the best advocate for all FCS HBCUs in this state. Also the ADs at the FBS level in this state will rotate playing and pay guaranteed payday for men’s and women’s basketball with all the HBCUs at the FCS level. This will increase revenue for our HBCU institution in this state and increase the budgets big time for our program."

So because Saban mentioned a HBCU he now owes them something? People need to grow the hell up and stop playing victims.

TE Breakdown for 2023

TE Breakdown
OU added two in 2022, and is losing two for 2023. OU needs at least one, more like two TEs in the 2023 class. Helms and Llewellyn should be ready to star on the field in 2023, but depth wise OU will need more TEs. OU had a verbal from Luke Hasz last year but Hasz decommitted from OU and shifted to Arkansas. No signs to indicate that he’s looking to give OU a second chance. Also no sign that number one TE Duce Robinson who had OU in the lead prior to the coaching change is still looking at OU.

OU leads for
  • Reid Mikesha 6-5, 230 Texas Four Star - Former Clemson commit. Just visited OU unofficially and has a visit setup for the BBQU event. All the predictions and crystal balls are choosing OU. On film, Mikesha is a lot like Jason Llewellyn in terms of his blocking skill. He’s comfortable working from the classic in line TE position or from a behind the oline H-Back type position. Just visited Norman after his Clemson decommit and coming back for the BBQU event.
OU is in the top five for
  • Malachi Coleman 6-5, 190 Nebraska Four Star - OU going to the land of Husker again for a TE? Coleman attends the same HS as OU TE Kaden Helms. He’s a little light right now for TE but has the frame to be a 220+ TE/WR hybrid. Coleman easily could give OU WR reps while bulking up to the TE position. Coleman has been throwing up great track times in the 10.5/100M range. His recruiting profile seems to be blowing up based on the new offers. Visiting for the BBQU event.
  • Jackson McGohan 6-5, 220 Ohio Three Star - Currently a Cincinnati verbal. OU has been recruiting him most of spring. An OU visit almost happened for the spring game. An Ohio State offer appears to be the key in his recruiting. If the Buckeyes don’t get involved, OU might have a shot at getting McGohan on campus for an official.
OU is lurking around for
  • Lafayette Kauiway 6-6, 230 Texas Three Star - Just a massive athlete. Excellent hands and good speed. A very willing physical blocker. He’s from Arlington and OU appears to have UT and UNC in front. No current visit scheduled for OU.
  • Markus Dixon 6-4, 230 Pennsylvania Three Star - Very talented TE prospect, good speed and hands. More of a flexed TE based on his film. OU offer but no visit currently scheduled. Clemson after losing Mikesha seems to be making Dixon a focus.
  • Olsen Platt Henry 6-3, 210 Florida Three Star - Seems like more of a big WR/Flex TE. He’s got excellent hands and excellent speed. No visit scheduled to OU yet.
The Talented Wildcard
  • Jelani Thurman 6-5, 230 Georgia Four Star - The best looking overall TE prospect that OU has offered. He has excellent speed and is a very physical blocker. A UGA legacy the entire Southeast is recruiting him. I’d love for OU to get a visit and have a chance for him.

WOKElahoma - May 18, 2022

*Alright, so I think where to start is pretty simple this week with the talk of long-time receiver commitment Ashton Cozart and a visit to Oregon this weekend.

Now, as most of you all know Ashton has, to whatever degree, denied the news - though I admit I'm still not sure what to make of it as he said things were going against people (now) and he can see more of who they really are but the news isn't true? Again, I don't understand how those two things co-exist unless he was mixing multiple scenarios into one Instagram post?

Regardless, this smoke has been going around for over a week now and from what we can gather Oregon is putting together a lucrative NIL deal for Cozart and that's a large part of the appeal. So far Cozart hasn't gotten back to us about his refutation of the news but if he does, obviously we'll update you all.

The bottom line is that perhaps this causes him to rethink things and he doesn't take the visit but at the time of the report there were expectations in Dallas and Eugene that he would be there this weekend so this wasn't something that just came out of thin air.

**So if that should happen, what would be Oklahoma's next move?

We're not sure yet and again we'll see how Oklahoma handles the situation moving forward - how hard a line they draw due to Brent Venables' rules about commits visiting other schools - and while we don't think the bit of news is directly connected, it is an interesting coincidence.

"(Oklahoma) will be here Thursday," said Owasso, Okla. four-star receiver Cole Adams.

And while it would be easy to chock up as a simple in-state visit it's going to be Cale Gundy, Oklahoma's first-year receivers coach, who will be checking out Adams.

It feels like if the Sooners are going to offer, this week could be the moment - we'll keep an eye on it.

***From an in-state receiver that everyone knows to a new in-state recruit that Scoop is betting you've never heard of before.

That said he's one you may need to get to know as he's a member of the Rivals250 who just landed in Oklahoma's backyard.

Dale Miller has been at some of the nation's biggest programs after originally making his name at Hoover and then transferring to IMG back in January. Now he finds himself at Edmond Deer Creek just north of Oklahoma City.

Miller arrived a few weeks ago after moving into the area and doing some research on various local programs. He, as an Alabama native, is already followed by Jay Valai though it is unclear how much interest the Sooners may have. Regardless though it's worth noting when a player this highly thought of suddenly drops into the state of Oklahoma.

OT: Texting and Driving

Good afternoon scoopers. Just wanted to present this to you all and hopefully it will be helpful or worth something to some of you. Please read.

For those of you that live in Norman, if you have driven up Flood Ave from Robinson heading north you have likely noticed our waterline project on the east side of Robinson. On Wednesday, we were boring underneath Rock Creek Rd along Flood. While completing this bore, we had two workers standing in the median, locating our drill pipe. The traffic along Flood traveling north and south came to a halt and the left turn signals came on. A vehicle then turned east from flood towards Rock Creek Rd, and while doing so ran over two of our workers.

I was on Flood waiting to turn right onto Rock Creek Rd. As I ran out of my truck to assess the situation, a woman emerged from her car, clearly distraught from the event with her phone in her hand. I immediately run to my two guys who are laying on the pavement in their Class-2 Construction Vests. Both men clearly writhing in pain but luckily not severely injured. I look at the woman and say (maybe shout) "Let me guess, you were fvcking texting and driving?!?!?!?" She immediately bursts into tears and admits to being on her phone.

Police, Norman Fire and Paramedics quickly arrive on scene and assess our workers. They both ended up going to the hospital to be evaluated and were released with minimal injuries. The driver stayed on scene and ended up apologizing to the workers. She seemed like a very nice woman who just made a dumb mistake that many of us make daily- on our phones while driving.

What many people fail to realize is that this woman's life could have been flipped upside down had one of the workers been standing differently, fallen differently, etc. What ended up being a gigantic learning lesson could have ended in manslaughter. One of our guys that was struck by her car is going to be a father in two months. Had things gone differently, that baby could have never met her daddy.

Please, please, just put the phones down.

Caleb Williams hated being the backup (24/7 Article)

He talks about how he wasn't given a fair shot to start at OU and mentions Riley wouldn't really help him get better.

I'm not sure what anyone's trying to accomplish here.

Sunday Notes...

As Scoop noted yesterday, we were somewhat expecting some fireworks from Arizona State receiver transfer LV Bunkley-Shelton and in speaking to a few sources it sounds like that day could still come but for now it feels as though Oklahoma is just taking their time and seeing what all is available and the best allocation of their numbers.

Bunkley-Shelton, who had 33 receptions for 418 yards and two touchdowns in 2021 for the Sun Devils, continues to be very high on the Sooners and I'm told the visit went extremely well. Depending on a few variables it's possible that he ends up in Norman but for right now Oklahoma wants to be patient.

That said it could meet some resolution soon as some feel he could be in competition with former in-state star Javian Hester, the Missouri transfer. Hester will be on campus starting tomorrow and while Hester has always been pretty honest about his affinity for Oklahoma it will be interesting to see what the former Tulsa Booker T. Washington standout thinks of Norman over the upcoming 48 hours.

Hester has plans to visit Notre Dame and Baylor in the coming weeks and mentions even perhaps taking a visit to Arizona State though if I were guessing I'd bet that one doesn't come to pass.

Just keep an eye on these two as they may well be connected or the Sooners might decide both can help. It feels a bit up in the air at the moment.
