Program is Down Bad

While obviously the coaching staff has been pretty brutal at times, I still put 90% of this bullshit on the players and the leftover TBOW stank. Below is a list of players that I would want to move forward with after this season. Anyone not on this list I don’t really care to keep around:

Farooq
Barnes
Stoops
Freeman
Mims (but also over his bullshit so idc)
Gabriel (but only as a backup)
Jake Taylor
Sexton
Byrd (?)
Guyton
Bowman
RSJ
Kanak
Laulu
Lawrence
Gentry
R Mason
Halton
Coe
Lewis
Stutsman
McKenzie

There are some interesting omissions of course, but I mean damn these dudes suck. The thing that really kills me is that all of the “leaders” on this team are terrible performers. The whole damn thing just needs to be burned down.

The Purge

The main difference between this year’s current 5 loss team and last year’s team that could have lost 5 games is true alpha leadership, and high level quarterback play. Exhibit A (USC). BV is going to have to prune some branches to get the tree growing in the direction he wants. This team is not void of talent. Dissenting and doubting voices and actions are more prevalent. We need to trust that BV and staff knows where the problems are, and will address them when the season ends. You don’t wait 20 plus years working under three HOF Coaches winning championships and are not prepared to be a Head Coach. We need to trust him and his staff. Instead talking about which 17 yr old is going to de-commit how about we show the kids that are committed more love and support.

Most damning BV quote

Ouch. Getting to writing.

Going for the FG in the fourth in those conditions?
“Zach — he's been outstanding. All the way since spring ball. And as you saw there he had plenty of leg. The conditions weren't that bad on the field. And, again, based on how we had been, the lack of execution all day, I didn't think we were going to miraculously come up with this big time conversion on fourth down offensively.”

Dude, Seriously

I've been debating whether or not I wanted to waste my time writing a post on this board that is going to be ridiculed and underappreciated; however, listening to 95% of you bitch about the coaching staff and the crowd chanting "Fire BV," "BV is LOST," "we made a bad hire," etc. has just pushed me over the edge to state the obvious because it's clear that must of you don't know jack about the game and/or are simply too young and/or dumb to understand what is happening and/or what is going to happen.

For the last 10 + years (basically, since BV left) OU football has been mediocre at best. When Baker arrived we were at least good enough to win 70-69 track meets because of (and only because of) elite QB and skill position play. Nevertheless, a Charmin soft mentality has been instilled in this team and program for more than a decade. The calling card of this team during the Lincoln years has been: "don't worry, our offense will bail us out." Our deficiencies have simply been masked by 2 #1 NFL draft picks and the current NFL MVP Favorite. If we did not have Baker, Kyler, Jalen, 1 good year of Spencer and 1 good year of Caleb, this team would have been 6-6 at best every year since about 2011. You do not change that overnight.

On offense, DG is not good. It all starts and ends there. On defense, we have sucked for more than a decade; however, we no longer have a QB to bail us out. As a result, we are what we have been for the last ten years minus the elite QB play: a really shitty football team. And all of you know that to be true. If you disagree, you're lying to yourself.

You inbreeds who are calling for BV's head are absolutely moronic. That man knows more about not just football - but winning football at national championship levels - than most of you could ever dream of remotely comprehending. Is there another current college football head coach not named Saban who has more NC rings on his fingers than BV? Maybe - but I don't care to look it up. The point is, he knows what it looks like, knows what it smells like, and has won with every team he's been a part of. Do you think he just suddenly forgot how to win and install a winning mentality when he came to OU? If you think the defense is too hard do you also think it was too hard for early Clemson players? What about early 00's OU players? But it must be BV, right? GTFOH.

This team sucks, there's no denying that. And I'll tell you what - it's going to get a lot worse. This recruiting class is not going to stick and that really won't be BV's fault either. You can't blame him for the players he got stuck with this year. The way this team was left by TBOW last fall is unprecedented. And the players that were left remaining have that 10+ years of Charmin soft mentality ingrained in them. That is not BV's fault however, that reality is manifesting itself on the field and will manifest itself in recruiting. We have a couple of 2-9; 3-7 years looking at us right in the face unless this class sticks. And you know what? That's OK. This program needs to be rebuilt from the ground up and rid of the Charmin soft mentality.

I'm going to liken this situation to Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. Jim was obviously a extremely successful head coach everywhere he went: Stanford, San Francisco, et.. al. He inherited a crap, nonexistent team that perked up a bit then regressed. Fans were obviously calling for his head; however, the Admin. stuck with him because similar to BV at OU, they were aware of his passion level for and investment in the program. They also knew that similar to BV, Jim knows about winning football, you just don't forget how to do that. The main difference between JH and BV is simply this: Michigan sucked when JH arrived and there was nowhere to go but up. We have sucked for 10 plus years minus the elite QB play. We are now getting exposed for what we have been.

I guess my point is writing all of this is the following: to all of you saying "Fire BV." get your heads out of your asses. You've been the fan of a team which even on it's good days was frustrating to watch with a horrible defense combined with a Charmin-soft, high school mentality. BV knows how to win, he didn't just forget that; however, it's most likely going to get a lot rougher around here before it's gets better because the old culture needs to be completely washed away.

BV is our guy. If you can't see that, I can't help you.

Penalty Pick Up

How was that huge penalty picked up after our guy intercepts and takes a knee in the end zone? Their guy just comes in late and hits him while kneeling and the announcers could not believe they picked up the flag and would have offset the idiotic offsides penalty and they would have had to punt. Not discussing whether we suck or not just that I could not understand why it was not a penalty?

Swagger

I think carey brought up some intuitive points about pride. And it’s an insight he has because of having the benefit of seeing rather closely different teams over a long period of time.

‘swagger’ isn’t something you just put on like a shirt.

It’s earned both individually and collectively. It’s passed on from a graduating upper classmen to a an inexperienced freshman. And then maintained, fought for and earned again.

And OU had it and Texas and other programs didn’t; For a long while.

Alabama is fighting like hell to keep it right now, because they know how important it is.

It’s a real difference in sustained success and winning championships, and ultimately what “sooner magic” always was and is.

OU damn well better fight for it and recognize its value as it is as important, if not more, than X’s and O’s.

When you lose to anyone 49-0 on the biggest stage, they don’t just get the W, they took your swagger away.

It takes a LONG and committed hard road to get it, and the same to get it back.

You lose your swagger, you lose your killer instinct in a game. You don’t put people away. You look like this OU team.

OU lost its swagger after Blake and Schnelly. Bob Stoops brought it back. First, his team followed him and took on his demeanor. Then Stoops made them earn it (schmitt) so they’d not just be mimicking but internalizing and feeling it. Then he put them in the right position to be successful (x’s and o’s) so they could reap the benefits. And then the team eventually had the swagger themselves and passed it on to underclassmen and anyone who came into the program.

Does BV have that same affect as a leader on a football team? I dunno. But OU has lost a precious thing and there will be a long road to get it back.

P.S. Blaming the former staff and raid on our roster and relishing and hoping for USC’s and Texas’ failures is not step one to getting your swagger back.
This board needs to get its swagger back too.
