OT: 3 UVA Football Players Shot and Killed

3 University of Virginia football players killed in shooting; student suspect in custody, police say

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The suspect in a shooting at the University of Virginia that killed three members of the football team was taken into custody Monday, more than 13 hours after he allegedly gunned down fellow students in a bus as they returned from a school field trip, authorities said.

University President Jim Ryan and law enforcement officials were in the middle of a late morning news conference when they received word that Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a former UVA football player, had been apprehended.

Two other students were wounded in the shooting late Sunday night
, which happened near a campus parking garage as a charter bus full of students returned from seeing a play in Washington, D.C., for a class field trip. Ryan said one of the students was in critical condition and the other student was in good condition at a local hospital.

Ryan confirmed Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry were killed, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

Has the bender worn off?

Look folks - the cuppboard is bare. All this "we should have hired" talk is nonsense. Guys who actually played the game on the field - few of whom even played for Venables, are consistently saying the same thing. It's not because they are closing ranks around Coach V - it's because they know what they are seeing out there. Guys being put in positions to make plays, and not making them.

When guys are in position to make plays, and they make them - that's called ability. And right now ability is not in very long supply around here. There is no fix for that but time. Guys are not going to get but so much better, we're going to have to get better guys. And that's not a one recruiting class deal. Yeah, better play at the QB position would cover a lot of deficiencies - but that's EXACTLY what we experienced for the past few seasons.

I don't exaggerate when I say Vince Lombardi couldn't do much better with this. Nick Saban didn't forget how to coach this season, but you see the difference that not having elite talent all over the place makes this season. But again, they have a great QB and that can get you over the hump on a lot of days - but not to the championship.

Texas has a much deeper roster than we do. They know it, and we know it. So does Texas A&M. Neither one have first year coaches - This is year 2 for Sark and year FIVE for Jimbo. That means EVERY player on Texas A&M's roster was recruited by him, and a significantly greater number of the players on Texas roster were recruited by Sark. And look what they have to show for it.

Stop asking "why they haven't gotten better over the season" - because the answer is - this is the level of talent we have. Go back to being in Math class as a kid. Did every kid in the class pick it up as fast? No. The Teacher said the same thing to everybody - but some don't ever catch it, and some catch it quick. Same sh** with football. We got more of the slow kids for now. So that means you get inconsistent play, more mistakes, etc.

So yeah, we may not make a bowl this season. Get over it and lose notion of "embarassment" or "disgrace", as if you're owed something. This is years of recruiting misses and other things coming home to roost. Dan Lanning or <<pick the guy>> would not have fared any better HERE with this talent. I don't know what is going to happen - but I do know that talent matters, and we don't have it in spades. I also know from being AT OU in the 1990s the difference between a team lacking talent, and a PROGRAM in chaos.

It is Coach Venables or never for Oklahoma!

I believe in my heart and mind that if Coach Venables is not the Coach to bring Oklahoma back to their "Glory Years", Oklahoma will never be able to return to their glory years. I am as disappointed as anyone per how this season has progressed. But, 100% of the players, fans, and yes social media must give our only Coach the opportunity to recruit his players, to truly change the culture, train the players to have only an OU winning attitude, and to transform them into a unit that is always prepared, focused, and has a "Killer Instinct". I am sorry but we are either going to give Coach Venables at least 3 years to accomplish this or we will no longer have an Oklahoma legacy for the future. Trusting Coach Venables is being 100% committed to him and his program.

Work the Portal

If you are going to get your hands dirty, rather than bagmen and playing with that fire for a HS kid with no production, why not work the system to get the word out to highly productive D1 talent at programs with less exposure that you want em?
Technically the player has to enter the portal of his own volition and a program can’t reach out to them until so…but come on. There are ways and you know it’s happening.
For example, Colorado State University WR Tory Horton. Came with Norvell from Nevada (yes, smart coaches bring their players with them) and he is about to pass 1,000 yds receiving.
Have seen him live and he’s a DUDE.

Ran a punt return back for TD against 7-3 wyoming this weekend.

If i’m going to cross the line and re-load my program, I’m working the system this way.

Hell, bama’s best LB and best RB are portal guys..and they were thriving at legit programs already.

If you have the brand, like OU does, the portal rules equal free agency.. so do it a little dirty.

Coordinator Project 3 Man Front Videos

Hey Everyone, I just wanted to attach a couple interesting videos here from the Coordinator Project youtube. It is a great channel with a lot of really great and interesting videos. I wanted to drop these specific 3-3-5 videos to watch, just because of the on-going discussion we have had this season on our fronts.

I see a lot of frustration any time OU has 3 DL on the field and I see a lot of discussion about not being able to stop the run/get a pass rush, or that we do not have the personnel to be able to run this defense, specifically on the Defensive Line. However, we learn in the first video, the original strategy around this defense was basically when you didn't have the necessary talent/size/depth along the defensive line. The 3-3-5 was designed to be able to play a kind of modified bear front, but instead of playing it with monster space eaters up front, you're playing it with smaller/faster players and you're using competitive/defensive depth. In other words, coaches would determine that they do not have the necessary size/talent/depth on the defensive line, so instead of running out an additional mediocre big guy, let's replace them with another small fast guy and let's make the large OL have to chase/catch them. Also, with an extra fast guy on the field, not only are you in a better position to defend the pass, but also your LB's and DB's can be a little more aggressive committing to their run fits, because there's an extra fast guy on the field to help/protect them against the pass.

Moral of the story is we just shouldn't freak out every time we have only 3 DL on the field. It doesn't inherently make your run defense or pass rush worse. I also don't think the 'we don't have the personnel to do that' argument is very valid, when you dig into the origins and even the current application of the strategy. A LB or a DB has less of a chance to blow up an OL than a DL does, but they have a better chance of getting underneath or around a blocker. There's all kinds of pluses/minuses/give/take/strengths/weaknesses in any defensive personnel/alignment/play.

Kinda says it all doesn't it?

Brent's defense has never ever been this low. Almost always 1 or 2 in conference. (this is COMBINED with the worst rushing D.)

This kind of collapse in the front 7 reminds me of what happened to Jimbo and his offensive line at FSU. I remember posting multiple shocking clips from twitter of how bad their offensive linemen were. (a LOT of parallels between Jimbo and TBOW)

Brent has to overhaul thru the portal. Complete. Furking. Overhaul.

OT: Who the hell is CJ Vogel

This “recruiting expert” CJ Vogel keeps popping up on my twitter. His bio claims he covers OU and Texas recruiting for the Action Network, which I’m not familiar with. I swear this guy is just an OU troll and holds UTs junk week in and week out. We need to cut down on the amount of recruiting outlets, Rivals and 247 is enough. Also we don’t need most national recruiting pundits

OT: Virginia football shooting

Active shooter on campus is a former football player. Not a lot of information out right now but have seen reports that members of the football team have been shot or killed. Shooter is still on the loose.

here’s the scanner for campus police if anyones interested. Kind of eery how calm they are
