Post game musings from an amateur

-Is the team made of glass? Are we just not physical enough? Seems like a lot of injuries piling up. Is it conditioning?

-I think we need a QB coach that has coached QBs. I think we need an OC too. I dont think either of them are on staff now.

-I’m not sure this oline is a one year fix.

-I hope Hickman isn’t 100% because if that was him at 100% we have issues at center

-There was lots of talk about how good the WR room is. People saying Burks is a 1st rounder and our depth is really good. At the end of the game we were running out Ragins, Thompson, Roberts, Bauer as our passing targets. Not formidable.

-Our kicker missed an extra point after we made a two pt conversion that got called back because of illegal hands to the face. This is our season in a nutshell.

-I’m not sure any RB would be productive with this oline but the fall off that Sawchuk has seen in opportunities and production is a mystery.

-Nick, buddy, let’s play some football.

Quick Thoughts on Performance

1. Defense is legitimately SEC good. Tennessee is going to put some points up on teams and if Oklahoma had anything resembling an offensive identity, they would have won this game by 10.

2. Adding to that, the DL is legit. OU has players along the front 7 that will get them into this era of OU football.

3. Really likes our CB play save 5. 4 got caught a couple times but he plays so well elsewhere that it’s hard to hate when a guy just makes a good play. With Dolby out, Woodi needs to become the little Cheetah.

On offense:

1. Everybody but 54 needs to be full evaluated and reconsidered for the job. They don’t move anyone. 54 got beat a few times but he is the only player each week who plays with any attitude and the youngster is a transfer. It’s frustrating that the two players with the most “nasty” (Hickman & Nwaiwu) came from another program.

2. MHJr is your QB. He can break contain as the greats have done whenever blocking breaks down which turns a negative play into a plus or at least neutral. He also has a quicker trigger back when it comes to choosing when to take off and that is paramount right now. His arm is still a work in progress but will come with reps. Always interesting that players who couldn’t catch certain balls can get open and catch.

3. If Tatum is healthy, he is your starting back and needs 20 touches a game. Chuk should not see the field unless OU is up by 21+.

In my own Alternate Universe I was told

.... LMFAO, Been around since as long as Steel man on the ref ('71), mabe even longer. Me, We, I, all know it's been smoke & mirros with this Offesne, and SL needs his ass gone for calling the lame sh*t he CONTINUES to force down our throats..... "F" those runs up the middle on first down, they are NEGATIVE for the year, JFC Man!!!!!! We have scored 3 points in ever half, of every game this year, pathetic!

This IS NOT Oklahoma Football, and BV is responsible , saying' we'll have an aggressive, attacking style Offense, WTF is going on down in Norman. SL needs his ass fired today!

Some Quick Thoughts

1. Not some ground-breaking revelation, but Hawk needs to be the guy moving forward. His mobility gives him a chance with this god-awful offensive line and he at least appears less turnover prone than JA. In a sense I feel for JA. Horrendous OL, non existent run game, underwhelming and below average receiving corps. Unless something changes in a hurry, I don’t see a path forward for JA. I honestly feel bad for him because this surrounding group and offense gives him minimal chance of success.

2. The offensive line is horrible. Not okay, not bad, they are horrendous. No movement at the point of attack in the run game. Getting absolutely blown off the ball in the pass game. I’ve never seen so many plays with offensive linemen on the ground as the play ends. Our tackles can’t move, our guards are weak, and Hickman was dominated all night. I get TN has a strong defensive front, but the performance from the OU OL is terrible.

3. If we are going to run split-zone and zone insert, for god’s sake, recruit and play a real H back. If I have to watch Bauer and Jake whiff and not even touch a defender on those schemes moving forward I’m going to lose my mind. Bauer is extremely disappointing.

4. What a defensive performance. Outside of Kani and Woodi, the defense was lights out all night. Really awesome performance top to bottom by the defense.

5. Still thinking 6 wins for this team. Maine is a W, pray we play well against Auburn and SC. Don’t see another win on the schedule.

3 things should happen quickly

  1. Arnold should never touch the football again for OU . ( Jackson is probably the most costly QB bust ever , what a waste )
  2. Hawkins should start and Thompson should be his backup.. Hawkins had a heroic effort .
  3. Seth and JJF should be fired at season end , Brent needs to find a star OC ( . Missed on the OC from Kansas last year. ). Time for Brent to act as a head coach and hire the best OC available. Enough of the cronyism and buddy hire stuff .

Defense was fantastic and borderline elite.

Sigh...

I say this without emotion. Jackson Arnold is the biggest issue.
3 TOs directly on him. Oline is what it is. Seth is what it is. Wrs is what it is.

*Jackson has over 5secs to throw on his int and he throws it right to the defense. On an early down no less.
*Jackson is light with the ball a play after the defense creates a huge turnover. Add insult to injury IFF he pitches it to Barnes it's a race to the pilon. Also on 1st down
*We get another turnover ...and on 1st down Jackson throws a: late, long, lateral because he's flustered.

It's tough to tell your entire team you want to win and then trot him out there again.
Themes that I see..Tennessee is beating us up and playing with more edge. We're dropping like flies. Also sound tackling...watch our tackling in the second half. Not looking good.

Adjustments...lol
I'd go quick game and try to hit some pumps in the pass game.
I'd go back to 2 back and work the edges in the run game

This is rough!

We are not even close to sec ready

Coaches, schemes fans stadiums administration- city - all. We’re not even close. Tennessee fans laughing at our crowd. The stadium. Loads people can’t get rides out area.

Best of all- still waiting 2.5 hours post game for any Lyft, Uber taxi to give us a ride three miles to our hotel. Glad I didn’t bring my little kids down for this. Won’t be back for a while. Before you say bye, been a sooner all my life. So disappointed today

This Offense….

Might be as bad, or worse, than any Mike Stoops/Ruffin McNeill/Alex Grinch defense during Lincoln’s tenure. It’s beyond incompetent, it’s abhorrent. It’s bordering embarrassing.

I love BV. This defense is playing lights out against one of the best offenses in the country. Two turnovers on the opposite side of the field. Outside of 3-4 plays they have been lights out. Tremendous tackling, awesome stunts, stifling the run game. All for nothing….

This will be a 6-6 team. If BV doesn’t make an offensive change he might seal his own fate heading into 2025.

Hiring staff and coordinators might be the single biggest factor that determines a HC’s success in college football. BV struck out with Ted Roof (the “safe and easy” hire). He (despite what some OU fans think) nailed the hire with Jeff Lebby. Early returns suggest Alley is a great hire. Seth Littrell….?

If this team goes 6-6 or 7-5 heading into next year, Brent’s going to have to make some really difficult decisions. The Dabo mindset of loyalty and hiring “within the system” is a dangerous game.

I will conclude by saying this offensive line is the most single incompetent position group at OU in the last 5, maybe 10 years? I know they are banged up, but, at what point does something have to give?
