WOKElahoma - December 7, 2022

So I know that there have been a lot of talk about former Edmond Santa Fe standout and current Oklahoma State transfer portal entry Trace Ford.

I spoke with Ford a little bit yesterday and the feedback he has received has been massive early on 'I spent seven hours on the phone today'.

And yes, some of that time was spent with Oklahoma.

Ford is a guy that seems like he'll be playing all of this a little close to the vest but there are two obvious questions that keep coming up - could he play for Oklahoma and go against his old team? Beyond that his mother has a strong affinity for Oklahoma State and it will be interesting to see if she can stomach seeing Trace in crimson and cream.

But he'll be at his school of choice in January so this figures to all come together rapidly as he is also trying to finalize his graduation later this month and then begin work on his Masters at whatever school he chooses.

**One of the interesting things that has come out of the early running in the portal has been Oklahoma's fast-moving operation at wide receiver.

The Sooners have already made numerous offers to three receivers.

A few others that seem like they could come into play fairly soon are...

So speaking to Thomas a bit on Monday it was clear the Sooners have his early attention though I'm not sure how far that will take them as he has continued to pick up steam in recruiting.

With Cephas, there's a lot of buzz about Penn State - with him being expected to visit State College, Pa. this weekend. I'm told that the Nittany Lions are a bit higher on Thornton Jr. at this point but that they'd be willing to take both as they are working hard to rebuild their receiver room around promising sophomore quarterback-to-be Drew Allar. An Oklahoma visit seems completely possible

Singer is still a bit of a wild card that makes a lot of sense for the Sooners but one I'm still doing some digging around.

***I said in last week's Scoop that it was going to be truly interesting if Brent Venables used his in-home visit on Lehi (Utah) Skyridge Rivals100 EDGE Tausili Akana.

Well now, we know he actually took that step...

And in speaking to one source, there's some belief that the Sooners have remained in good shape after spending much of the summer as the 'perceived' leader.

"It's all seemed really good (for Oklahoma), so far," one source said.

Again, with Akana - who does play things a little close to the vest - it's hard to be sure of much but there's a feeling Oklahoma can get a big win here.

Sooners (Sherfield) figure it out in second half

We won't talk about that first half. But Sherfield came alive, with 22 of his 24 points after halftime. And we got Los and Godwin for interviews, I'll take it.

Full story:

Article in FanNation on OU's "widespread cultural change" by Venables.....

Venables changed their academic schedule, practice times, workout regimen, game planning, etc. So many changes, according to Mims, "made it hard to cultivate leadership".
"Venables offered 'holistic' changes-and that's exactly what he implemented in the form of programmatic, logistical and fundamental alterations to everything the players had been accustomed to".
Mims said he will play in the bowl game but doesn't know what he will do beyond that. Then he said of Venables "he brought a lot of things that players have to get adjusted to, especially Schmitty coming back. You got to do the things he wants you to do the ways he wants you to do them. Basically, that's the biggest thing, is just getting adjusted to that".

Wednesday Notes...(UPDATE: 1:01p)

UPDATE: 1:01p - I have had a few talks with people and can confirm the Sooners have had some early contact with Texas A&M running back transfer L.J. Johnson Jr.

I'm not sure where it will go from there but the Sooners expressed interest in the former Rivals100 running back as soon as the Portal opened.

ORIGINAL: I'm told that Oklahoma will not be hosting Khalil Barnes this week nor next.

The expectation has been for him to pick Clemson for some time now but he had been talking about a trip in December for quite some time. It appears that won't be happening now.

Ending of Nova?

The message to our guys is these high-level games are going to be possession by possession. It comes down to a lot of little things. Where can we get better? I thought our guys played hard. They went in there in an awesome environment. Weren’t afraid, didn’t let the crowd get to them. There were confident. We did a lot of good things. Daniels hit some big shots. You hit pause, and Jalen Hill couldn’t be contesting him more without fouling him. But we have to find ways to win. It comes down to a lot of little things. Two points here, three points there, that you could have avoided if you would have done this or that. That’s what a lot of these games are. The high-level games, you start to get into conference and the little things matter. The little things matter. It came down to some little things in that game.

I have nothing pressing, how’s about NET rankings? SHSU being No. 7?
It’s too early to really be so focused in on that because it’s going to fluctuate. I know when we get into the meat of our schedule, the NET, the strength of schedule will start to go through the roof when you go each game. We have to control what we can control. We thought Sam Houston was good when we played them. The human part is you do root for teams you beat or lost to them because you want them to do well because of how the NET is factored in. It’s so early. You’ll drive yourself completely crazy – it’s like social media. If you’re spending so much time analyzing the NET for so long every day because it’s going to change. You have to spend more time preparing your time and controlling what you can control. Spent a lot of time in last 48 hours working on UMKC, their strengths and what they do well. I would be lying if I said I didn’t look at it. I saw it. Looked at it, breezed over everything, but that’s about the extent of it.

I ask about C.J.’s early-season funk?
“CJ’s going to be a big piece for us. He’ll be the first one to tell you, he wants to play better. He’s been amazing staying with it, like in the film sessions he’s on top of everything. I couldn’t ask him to be more attentive. He’s hanging on every word. He’s coachable. His attitude’s great. We’ve got a handful of guys like that, it’s not just CJ. Those are guys that want to get better, and I’ve got to help them through. They’ve got to help themselves through it.
“As a player, do it in practice. Seeing the ball going through in practice, getting extra shots up, getting excited about the little things. I always say this: you can’t put all your eggs in your shooting question. And what I always bean by that is you can’t let your offense or that shot going dictate the rest of the game. He’s not doing that, but you can get yourself hyped up — he had a really nice steal on the second possession of the game. He actually came down, it was after a nice ball screen, he came down, deflected it and saved it in bounds.
“Just trying to show them there’s value in a lot of different ways. I think CJ’s got big room to take a leap. He’s one of the guys that I think can take a leap.”

UMKC?
“Their guards. (Rayquawndis Mitchell), the UIC transfer. He had 35 against Toledo. They’re long and athletic. They’re rebounding. I feel like I’m at basketball camp sometimes, I don't want to butcher their name. But god, he’s so strong. He's a mismatch guys. He’ll get down and post you up. But they all…the two brothers — Promise and Precious (Idiaru) — are so long and athletic. They’re gonna be really good players. They just crash the glass. I'm impressed with how hard they crash the glass. I'm impressed with their one-on-one ability. They have remind me of Doss from Pine Bluff who I thought could really go one-on-one. They're gonna press you. They’re going to zone you. They're gonna change defenses. I've known Marvin (Menzies) for many years at UMKC. He was with Rick Pitino back at Louisville before he became the head coach at New Mexico State. He's one that had Pascal Siakam at New Mexico State. So he's got some guys in that mold. Long. Athletic. In his first year he brought in a lot of new guys. So I'm impressed with the rebounding. How hard they draw foul because they go downhill, they'll drive you. We’ve been good against really good rebounding teams. I think that's been a strength of ours because I always say to our guts, you don't have to be the biggest, longest, athletic, but8 can be the best blockout team. And I think we block out. We've done really well on the glass this year. And we got to continue to do that against this team.”

Next steps?
One, I’m always thinking there are so many answers to that question. I feel like we can get better offensively doing different things. Defensively, there are so many things. I think we have to get deeper. I think we have some guys not playing to their capabilities. I want to help them with that. I want them to help themselves with that. We have to get deeper as we head into this and getting more production from some guys. That’s a big thing as we head into this thing. You need all hands-on deck. We need to be deep. We have the potential to be deep, but we need to get guys playing better than they are. I need to help them with that.

Blake Bell shattered the soul of Stillwater. Enjoy the following to remember:

Wash it down with this incredible OKST postgame report where one of the first sentences reads, “Bob Stoops owns Mike Gundy.”

My personal favorite thing to come from this is Blake Bell’s go ahead TD comes in front of the eyes of one of my best friend’s, the best man at each other’s wedding, in a season he said Blake Bell was dog shit. In his last bedlam to attend as a student at OKST. Love to see it.

Enjoy!

BV breaks down portal as only BV can

Now that is some honesty.

Getting young guys ready for FSU, after all the opt-outs and portal dudes?

"I think the guys that are in the portal or will get in the portal – we had Theo Wease and he’s looking to be a starter somewhere. The other guys really had not been able to carve out a niche and did not contribute in any way in regards to on the field play. The guys, in regards to playing, are the guys who have been playing all year. J-Red, on defense, is the one and will get ready for the Senior Bowl. He was in a group of guys that rotated all year. Then on offense, we’ve been fortunate to get Jovantae Barnes some really good time. Marcus was a little banged up late. Hoping to get him back at running back as well. Then the young offensive linemen, along with Tyler Guyton, we’ll have a good group of guys at tackle that will do a good job and looking for opportunity. They’ll have almost a spring ball’s worth of practices, give or take, to refine their skills and get ready for this game and have a great challenge."

Dindy and Overton…

Soooooo are they are staying at A&M?? Unless the portal heats up in the next few weeks it looks like the mass exodus at A&M was a little exaggerated. I think I saw there were around 13 portal entries so far?? Pretty close to where we are. Hopefully that changes soon cause I would LOVE to add Dindy to our roster and would LOVE for that cult to melt to the damn ground!!
