National Title Musings

I haven’t ever started a thread so forgive if this is a repeat. I was inspired to start this with the prior thread about how we all became fans. I thought it would be fun for everyone to talk about specific memories they had of national title games. The good, bad and what could have been. Also realistically when you all think the next national title could be and how many you all think we could win in the next 30 years.

Revisiting preseason predictions for OU's 2023 campaign

In the midst of transfer portal news and the impending announcement of Zac Alley's hire, I took a minute to revisit some of the preseason predictions I made for 2023.

It was... interesting.

An Oswin Erhunmwunse update (Sun 8:40pm)

Tonight, I received information from multiple sources indicating that Oklahoma is no longer in the running for Oswin Erhunmwunse. Sources close to Erhunmwunse suggest that Providence, Georgia Tech, and Creighton remain contenders for his services. Interestingly, one source close to Erhunmwunse expressed confusion, stating they have "no idea" what happened with OU. This recruitment saga has proven to be one of the craziest and, frankly, a humorous one. To add to that, the mystery with Erhunmwunse runs so deep that college coaches aren’t even sure how old he is. There’s a lot that is highly peculiar here.

Here's a timeline of the developments:

- December 5th: Erhunmwunse takes an official visit to Oklahoma.
- December 21st: Erhunmwunse visits Providence, and it's suggested that Providence becomes the "heavy favorite" to land him.
- December 23rd: Oklahoma re-enters the race and becomes the new favorite.
- December 27th: Multiple sources indicate Erhunmwunse is a "done deal" for OU after a compelling package presented by the Sooners.
- January 2nd: Erhunmwunse is predicted to land at Oklahoma; I enter a Futurecast after learning some enticing details about what the Sooners have lined up.
- January 3rd: Creighton starts making a push with an appealing package, making the situation more intriguing. OU remains a heavy favorite.
- January 3rd: Erhunmwunse visits Providence for the fifth time.
- January 4th: The situation shifts to OU 75%, Creighton 25%.
- January 6th: Erhunmwunse visits Georgia Tech; OU still maintains heavy favoritism.
- January 7th AM: Creighton is reportedly out of the race; sources suggest it's now a battle between OU and Providence.
- January 7th PM: Sources close to Erhunmwunse and the program believe OU is out, while Providence thinks they're the choice. Creighton thinks Providence is the favorite, with themselves as the second option. Georgia Tech believes they still have a shot. Sources close to Erhunmwunse remain clueless about why OU is no longer in contention.

College leaders to discuss radical "Project Division I" at NCAA convention next week

While it might not be the sexy headlines that the National Championship Game has for next week, the NCAA convention in Phoenix (Ariz.) could result in monumental changes to the college football landscape. https://oklahoma.rivals.com/news/ncaa-s-project-division-i-to-be-discussed-at-convention-next-week

Hoops note: Calling the shot on Oswin Erhunmwunse (Update Thu 10:40pm)

- I have entered a FutureCast in favor of Oklahoma for the services of Oswin Erhunmwunse. Multiple sources have indicated their expectations that Erhunmwunse will choose the Sooners. Additionally, a reclassification is anticipated.

UPDATE (Thu 10:40pm)

- Here is some added context on this recruitment: Last Tuesday, I received a text informing me that Oklahoma is back in the race for Oswin. Around that time, all signs pointed to Oklahoma or Creighton as the likely choice. Leading up to yesterday, sources on the Creighton side believed that Oklahoma was the team to beat. However, yesterday, multiple sources indicated to me that Oklahoma had pulled away from Creighton and become the heavy favorite. These sources also provided enough information to give me the confidence to predict a futurecast in favor of Oklahoma. Continuing my efforts last night, I gathered additional intel: Creighton is making a push. They initiated their push last night, and sources on the Creighton side still believe that Oklahoma remains the odds-on favorite. I would expect Oklahoma to face one more challenge from the Blue Jays, as the Blue Jays are putting something together, but at present, things are looking positive for Oklahoma. The percentage in favor of Oklahoma that I was given from the Creighton side is 70%.

I will update you all if things change, this has been one of the more crazy recruitments that I have followed. I should have even more info on this tonight.

A few thoughts/ideas

I want to say from the outset that: 1). I’m wrong a lot.
2). I worked (in the marrow) in the intelligence field (Navy) …… so, my mind works a certain way. These things led me to Zac Alley and what looks to be his impending hire.

Now……

Zac Alley (DC) ….. everyone knows about his relationships from Clemson and his experience/success at an early age, his youth etc and what may be extrapolated from that in comparison to his predecessor (Roof).

There are other things to consider: FIT, BV values fit…. we’ve seen it with coaching, with acquiring portal talent and in the process of recruiting (“you recruit you own problems” - Jayshawn Ross). How this guy fits with scheme, staff and with the manner with which BV wants to attack the opponent - I suspect the last point was central to the decision to replace Ted Roof (no disrespect to him ….. think he did a good job, I think he did exactly what Ted Roof does…… you can’t blame a man for being true to his nature - I think he filled the role BV needed - experience, calm, methodical and would/did diffuse criticism from other young staffers (Chavis), and also not mind BV’s presence in the game plan.

Zac Alley also looks to bring some other things that I’ve gleaned from interviews and some intelligent discussion - a work ethic and attention to detail that rivals his boss……. AND perhaps something else - a feel or instinct for defensive play calling …… if offensive play calling is predicated on rhythm (this was Lincoln Riley’s strong suit, the UW offensive coordinator’s strong suit)…… then, conversely the defense is in the “break the rhythm” business - I would argue that……. besides the obvious (injury, poor officiating, turnover, penalties) …… poor anticipation of what Kansas QB Bean was going to do on 3/4th and very long was devastating - other examples of Oklahoma State or even wins like UCF.

I suspect it’s here that Venables hopes this hire will make the difference.

New OL Visitor inbound (UPDATE Sat 3:55pm)

Former Alabama OL Terrence Ferguson is on his way to the 405 for a visit.

The 6’4 320lb Ferguson is a former consensus Top 100 player out of the state of Georgia. Rivals had him pegged as the 64th ranked player regardless of position in the 2021 class.

Fresh off a visit to Florida State he just stepped on a plane to Norman and he’ll arrive in Norman this afternoon. He will be a R-Jr with two years of eligibility remaining.

He was a key reserve for Alabama this year appearing in 5 games, including a start against USF. He primarily played Right Guard but saw some snaps at Center as well. He wears number 69. I know that is important to a at least one of you.

I’ll try and keep you posted about how the visit went when I learn more, and about the other OL visit unless BD or PT get to it first.

Update (Sat 3:55pm) ——

I’m told the FSU visit was supposed to go until 3pm but Ferguson got on the plane at 2:19pm to Norman.

Not sure that it matters one bit, but it’s addition information.

McKinley commits and then entire defensive staff fired at LSU

Yes, I’m as sick of this topic as you are but it’s interesting the guy has committed to two schools and both have replaced defensive coaches.

If it’s really “about relationships” then this should be an opening. Unless of course, he knew of these changes in advance and even has been told of their replacement and it’s someone(s) he has a relationship with.

Parker, BD, weigh in?
