OU softball: Notes, takeaways from the Sooners' two wins over Iowa State

Patty Gasso said her team needed to play with more relentlessness after Wednesday's win. The team that showed up on Saturday, particularly in game two, played like it.

Hoops: Javian McCollum update

- Javian McCollum, who suffered a shoulder injury in Monday's practice, leading to his absence from Tuesday's game against Cincinnati, is expected to participate in tomorrow's matchup against Texas, as affirmed by multiple sources close to him. Even during Tuesday night's game, sources indicated that McCollum should be available for the upcoming contest against Texas. Yesterday, one source mentioned, "His shoulder is sore, but he's receiving treatment." Today, that same source reaffirmed to me that he fully expects McCollum to play. While I anticipate McCollum may not log as many minutes as usual, I do expect him to take the court. The crucial aspect of this injury is its short-term nature.

Update (Sat 11:00)

- In another update from a source close to Javian, I received a text stating, "He's ready to go."

EUGENE BROOKS Prediction

I don't do this very often. Maybe once every couple of years. I have to believe it - or I don't post it.

I love the whole "Diamond in the Rough" narrative. I know Eugene is not a completely missed player (We battled UT for him) but,
I just rewatched all of the film I could find on him and - I believe he's an All Conference / Maybe All-American in the making.

If he stays focused, patient, and puts in all of the work - I think the sky is the limit. He looks like a real player to me.

Just sayin'

Any players in this class that are not necessarily "Top-Tier" that you think will ultimately outshine their recruitment buzz ?

Ty Jackson is among the more coveted 'backers in the class and his camp tells Rivals it looks like the trip to Norman will be the weekend of April 6. More dates are to be set, and he's got some official visits lined up, so getting in now is ideal for any program trying to stay in the race.

Texas RB Riley Wormley preparing for busy visit schedule

First post on OUInsider as part of National Analyst Team, I will be around often!

I like where Oklahoma sits right now for Wormley.

He is high on the staff and their relationship goes deep.

OU softball shuffles weekend schedule vs. Iowa State

The Sooners will move Friday night's scheduled 6:00 p.m. game to Saturday at 5:00 p.m. due to inclement weather. The newly scheduled game will serve as Game 2 in a doubleheader against Iowa State, with Game 3 of the series still set for Sunday. https://oklahoma.rivals.com/news/ou-softball-big-12-opener-vs-iowa-state-rescheduled-to-saturday

DrummBeat: Some team notes on weight gains/losses from a few freshmen since arriving in January

*** Freshman RB Xavier Robinson said he showed up close to 250lbs and is now 228lbs. Added that, “I’m so much lighter on my feet. I feel great where I’m at.”

Source told me the other day, “X is gonna play. He moves so fast for a guy his size and he’s so strong. He will be a weapon.”

*** Freshman DL David Stone said he arrived “between 275 and 280.” Stone also said that he wants to be close to 300lbs by the season, but he has some gains to go, adding, “I’m the most I’ve ever been right now. But I’m in the 280’s. And even with that, I’m moving faster than I did at IMG, which is kind of crazy.”

The expectation is that he will be close to 300 come September. He says it’s a relief that he has six months to get there so pressure isn’t there and he has “my own race to run to gain that weight.”

*** Similarly, freshman NT Jayden Jackson has put on some solid weight himself, but he said it’s been easy, adding, “I came in 285 to 290. That’s a pretty good weight (for the coaches), but it’s the SEC and you gotta be pretty big. But I’m at 297 right now. They are trying to get the D-Lineman to 300.”

“Gaining weight isn’t really that hard for me,” Jackson went on talking weight expectations for DL. “That is a pretty good bonus I had, instead of losing weight (he said with sly smile on his face)”

*** Finally, I checked in with Sooners freshman DE Danny Okoye on his weight and he added/confirmed a nugget we posted on here a month ago, regarding his 40-yard dash time, saying, “I came in weighing 233lbs and now I’m 255lbs. I ran my forty in 4.56 seconds when they timed us.”

*** We will have more notes on newcomers, but wanted to get that up for you all quickly.
