Here’s what I heard over the weekend:
1) this will NOT be a tank year. With SGA, Dort, favors & Co, they think they have the nucleus to be competitive. Will be aggressive during free agency in the upcoming weeks. Looking for another big + 1 vet. Or 2 vets if they move Kemba.
2) they aggressively tried to move up in the draft. Everything was on the table aside from SGA. 1-4 would not budge. My source even said Presti, uncharacteristically, got out of his comport zone trying to get a deal done for 1&2.
3) SGA is continuously informed, 100% onboard and has been sold that he’ll be the man for the foreseeable future. fully expect SGA to sign max deal. Ofcourse, the last time I heard this type of stuff was June 2016.
4) the draft turned out about as good as they could have hope after getting screwed in the lottery. I pressed on taking the 18 yr old Aussie at 6 and was told “that’s why there was so much effort to move up”. They are really looking for a long term compliment to SGA and if they have to take some chances with a few picks to do it, so be it.
5) there seems to be a lot of excitement over where all these draft picks could end up, especially in ‘23-‘27. It’s another reason they don’t feel like they have to tank now. I went back and looked at the PG trade. I can’t believe the Clips gave up that much unrestricted. It truly could be a franchise maker, especially if something happens to Leonard.
6) jury is still out on Kemba healthwise (duh). I know that is to be expected but I was really hoping it would be a Chris Paul type thing. We’ll have to see.
7) if they aren’t tanking, they’ll do everything they can to get fans back in the stadium.
on a side note, I think it’s pretty cool that an Ok-based company paid up for the naming rights. I would have hated to see some generic crap.
