He was speaking at one of our local officiating events tonight.
He told me he was officiating the OU scrimmage last week and said all he can say is there are three quarterbacks in the running....I thought, "no shit?" Haha (Basically he was saying, I can't and won't say anything, so don't ask...LOL)
He told a story about Stoops as well that I thought was pretty good. When asked if there were any coaches he hated seeing on his schedule, he said they are all pretty good to work with. He and Bob were talking at the scrimmage and he told Bob that if he needed to yell anything at the official across the field, he needed to push the button on his hip and yell into his face. (The officials all wear headsets and microphones so they can communicate to each other and the coaches more efficiently.) Bob said, "Now come on, I'm not that bad anymore...I was a lot worse 15 years ago." They both agreed on that one. The official said he got a laugh out of Bob when he said, "Well, there must be something about the water in Youngstown." Yep, ol Pelini stories will not die very soon...
When the event was over, I asked him specifically about the ineligible players down the field that KSU and Baylor use to perfection. He did say that is something they are aware of, but don't count on too many changes this year. As long as the blocker has any part of his body within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage WHEN THE BALL IS THROWN, it is a legal play. He said they looked at two examples during the same game (these aren't reviewable calls). One, a penalty was called, but after viewing the game video, it was a legal play. He said that one looked obvious in real time, but slow motion showed other wise. The second, a penalty wasn't called, and he said that one looked like the right call in real time. The game video showed the player was actually 5-6 yards down field, but it just didn't appear that way until it was slow motion. So, I'm sure we will all be yelling at the TV's again this season...
