Not the question you asked, but would be at least as quirky. In 1959 and 1960 the 49er's had four guys in their backfield that used initials as their first name. One of them didn't play much, but they had Y.A. Tittle as starting quarterback, J.D. Smith at running back and R.C. Owens, king of the "alley oop pass" at Flanker and off the bench, R.C. Waters, another running back. Joe "the Jet" Perry was their leading rusher, but he was at the end of his career, winding down.
The 49er's were switching to the NFL's first spread offense. They called it a shotgun, and traded Tittle to the Giants after 1960, where he won three straight Conference titles, all as NFL runner up, in the days before the Super Bowl. Tittle wasn't well suited for the Shotguy, which they didn't use as a long yardage offense, but on every snap. After they traded Tittle, they added another guy with initials, who was there only a year or two, named J.W. Lockett.
Guys with initials was kind of their specialty. The Shotgun went away after the Bears blitzed it into submission. Still working on the same college backfield guys. It's harder to find. Pretty sure the Bengals started Pete Johnson at fullback in front of Archie Griffin for a while. Both played at Ohio State in the early 70's.
