I like Rattler more than ever after this game. Haha. Most people would have had a nervous breakdown in that situation. I’m just glad he responded to the boos on the field. If the boys can grind out games, that’s a good time. I thought WV was going to come in here and take one. Happy I’m wrong. Hopefully, this is a good launching point for this team’s identity.

Rattler is not playing to expectations but after tonight it's hard to pin much blame on him. The offensive line was a mess tonight. Lincoln has once again failed to establish a run game in the early games and the line lacks cohesion.
This. The oline was terrible. WVU was pushing them back all game.

About all we can expect with only two RBs.

Two running backs should be sufficient if they are talented, the offensive line blocks and the coach calls a good running game. 2000 season Q had 200 attempts and Works had 83. All the other backs average less than 3 carries. So IMO two backs are enough to win. The only problem with two backs is in case of injury, but so far that can’t be an excuse for the poor play. I think our backs are better than some give them credit for and I blame the rushing woes on Riley and the offensive line. Most of our great teams have relied on just a couple of running backs. BTW, Gray is averaging 5.0 yards a carry and Brooks 5.8 yards.

I think I agree that we don't run enough on first down. Also, we had like 20 called runs vs. 36 passes. Not balanced enough. Part of this is on Riley's game plan. But part of it is him trying to do what he thinks the team can do. I don't know.

But for all those criticizing Riley, who are we going to get that's going to be better? I mean he himself has won three straight conference championships, and gotten to the playoffs twice. It's the defense that has let us down during our losses.

Is there some coach out there that we could bring in that would make the team a lot better? If so, who? A coordinator from one of the SEC teams like Georgia or Alabama?

I totally agree. The point I wanted to make is that our poor offensive performance thus far isn’t due to only having two running backs. Both Gray and Brooks have rushed for 5 yards a carry and shared the duties equally. However its frustrating to think that our defense only gives up 16 to Nebraska and 13 to West Virginia and we barely escape losing two games. Sooner fans weren’t ready for that kind of offense from Riley and Rattler so both are going to get deserved criticism. It comes with the territory.

The Oline is just bad. Wherever Stills lined up, we had no answer. Once again we have not targeted the TE/HB. Over the middle had a lot of openings but hardly ever utilized. At this point we need to go extra wide, zero maulers on this squad. Morris looked decent, Raym is not ready. The 1st games with the CONSTANT rotations has killed these guys. It takes a lot of snaps for a Oline to gel.

Rattler is having a sophomore slump but his fall off is still better then 80% of Div1 QBs. If he can get Oline play, he'll be alright but I don't see the talent on this squad.

Rattler’s focus of just the primary target is killing his pro possibilities. Plus he takes off running like a scared deer. These qualities will have to change. Nowhere even close to a Heisman candidate. Move Mims to outside receiver. And ride OL ass until change is realized. For the Coaches to say this is the best OL in years was outright lying.

A couple of things besides bad Oline.

Defenses are staying basic, no more trying different things to confuse the QB. Riley was a master of tricking defenses and exploiting but now they are staying basic and telling our offense to out execute, we are not.

The RBs are really good but the counter has been figured out and the Oline, isn't any good. We have a lot of depth but it's all average players, so it's hard to separate, the bunch. Bidenbaugh needs to get 5 and stay with them.

On a positive note, the Dline us top 5, the LBs are top 10 and best yet Bonito and Ashomore have settled down. They both looked horrible in the beginning.

Rattler just needs to get and keep that swagger, he has all of the talent.

It sounds so simple and maybe you’re right. I hope so. But I sure would like to see things begin to blossom before too long. There’s a really big game coming up pretty soon.

One thing that many people overlook is the importance to the offense of the center. Creed might have been the best to play that position in the last 10 years in all of college football. That's the guy that makes the line calls, and he was super smart with his reads. I wonder how much of the O line difficulties are related to having a new guy in that one position. I believe they started a freshman there yesterday.

BINGO.

The o-line play has been poor. Rattler has not lived up to the hype. If this continues, Rattler may not get a draft grade he likes and will return next year. Then Riley will have a problem, Williams will want to play next year.
And I don't have one problem with rattler not workin out. It happens.

Good point. We also have to remember that Rattler isn't the one who anointed himself the Heisman frontrunner this year. The media is to blame. Should we be expecting better of Rattler? Sure.

If he had some signs of confidence, then sure he will be rebound. Holds on ball too long, misses seeing wide open targets, and takes off running like a drunk quail. All of these problems will need to be fixed by shorter mid zone passes, and simplified blocking schemes for the OL which remains shaky. But it’s ultimately coaching that has to change to restore his late season confidence from last year. It’s gotta change before it is too late.

All these improvements are possible ONLY if Rattler's supporting offensive cast plays like it did the second half of the 2020 season.
Not happening.
The offensive issues through the first 4 games go beyond just Rattler.
So goes the entire offense.....so goes Rattler's performance....and vise-versa.

Would be interesting to know how much of this could be improved by playing Williams and if so, maybe could get Linc to finally see the light on signing an OL ?
If it takes losing Rattler to the portal to save a season is that not the way to go ?
Play the best players to go all the way, Conference be damned

I grew up when OU defense was as important as the offense. Then the wishbone became the weapon. Even so, OU defense remained a main stay. We got away from the formula for awhile then Bob Stoops bought it back only to abandon the defensive importance to favor offensive superiority. Riley has continued with that strategy. I’m pretty sure that won’t work in the SEC. BONUS: And now the offense can’t get out of the way of the defense. Geez.

Well hell let’s just cancel the rest of the season. Bunch of freaking nancies.
You know, you’re probably right. We’ve all been spoiled at one time or another but for the most part been through one disappointing season after another because we were lead to believe “this is the year”. Well that’s getting old so now we’re just pissed and that’s never a good look. Frankly I don’t care how it looks. I want another championship.

Well some of us are just grouchy old men now that are tired of waiting. That and since I moved last year my new neighbor is an a-hole. 🤣
Just look at how he looks at me. The nerve.
