Quietest signing day

Would someone please share/summarize how well we did recruiting defensively?

This class is small. But the level of talent is big. Per rivals, using their 'Avg' ranking, OU comes in at #7, but by 'Points' #12. Granted, the numbers come from the offensive side of the ball. Add to this, the thought that each year, and especially this year, the transfer portal is going to continue to get bigger & deeper w/ players. Thus supplementing the overall 'class'. Riley and company will be looking hard to fill a few holes.

3 Star Coe DT is a Jr College transfer that will be used in the rotation immediatley.

4 star Harmon DB is going to be a ball hawk. He's already on the record stating he wants to be a finalist of the the Thorpe Award. That's a solid goal and an attitude that it takes to win.

4 star Smith OLB was ranked #33 in the entire class. The highest defensive ranked player of the class. Actually just shy of a 5 star rating. He's going to be a stud. He's going to be fun to watch.

4 star Gilliam DT, is going to push for playing time next year. Good kid w/ size already that appears to have his head on right. He came from the same HS as Harmon.

Are we at Bama level yet? no. But overall we did really good. Better than the past. I'm also reading that we'll most likely see a Safety added via the transfer portal.

My take anyway after reviewing & reading the reports of signing day.

Thanks KC, newnasty, JConXstry. Really appreciate the effort and information.

Like you said newnasty, we're not getting a many five stars on D, but were trending up, just like the defense in general. I like our chances to contend for a playoff spot next year.

6.1 is a 5star on Rivals. Clayton Smith is pretty darn close. He's got nice size for a backer too.
Rawlins-Kibonge could be fun to watch develop. Possibly one of our better DEs in a loooooong time.

I forget the poster but someone said we have a safety from last year that is looking good. I was concerned about safety in this class so hoping we get the help we need over the top per your comments on the transfer portal.

Just watch the kid from Florida's tape, Danny Stutsman. Wow, this is a great get for OU. People go backwards when he hits them. Great ball skills and ability to run with the ball. Another Rocky Calmus.

The dude is fast. I'm pretty sure it's why Grinch grabbed him. Speed D.

It's my opinion that the best recruiting talent evaluators, when all is said and done, are the coaching staffs.
Stutsman and Downs are good examples of this.
I'm also liking that Riley is claiming there will be more additions to the 2021 class and it won't surprise me if there are a few pleasant surprises.

Harrington 6'3 220 JUCO transfer sat out this season with an injury. Him and Mukes will be intimidating on the back end.

.

Smith, McCutchlin, Gillam, Harmon, Downs and Stutsman are perfect for Grinch. Mukes will most likely never play safety but a Hybrid LB.

Rawlings-Kibonge, if we see him playing for OU,in the next 12 months, it will be on the BB court. He's raw but talented. I think he's only played one full year of football and will need to add 20lbs. But the upside is definitely there.

Bowman will never play defense, Riley will dial up plays for his talent. It's a shame, because he would most certainly be our best CB. WR and return guy, is his future.

Coe, will be a practice squad, might see limited duty. If he gets quicker, playing at 280 or so, then maybe. Not sure why we offered. But if certain pieces fall in place, he might be a grey shirt.

Are we sure about Bowman? Because he is not as tall/long as Grinch likes?

No one here KNOWS where these newcomers will play, much less if they will be key additions....and Bowman's size should not be a deterrent for any position he plays given his athleticism.
If Riley said Bowman could play both ways, it may be true, as well as on punt and kickoff returns.

Leigh just became an even bigger priority.

Agreed. I think OU had some doubts about Foster as he was a legacy of A&M, but the news of Leigh pushing off signing until after the first of the year was the news that stung them the most. That is something that was unexpected. Caleb Williams needs to work on his buddy and bring him back into the fold.

Whichever team Leigh is signing with already knows hes coming. Its not unusual for a 5 star kid to want to "put the hat on" during the All-American game. More people will be watching them pick their teams during the game than when they signed at their school. With several guys entering the transfer portal, we need at least 3 quality linemen in this class to keep the drop off in the depth chart to a minimum,

This may be correct, but w/ Covid happening, there are many 'exhibition' games that are not being played. In fact, I'm thinking that half the bowl games this year will be cancelled. They may have some sort of 'show' in it's place to disuss the HS players & their school choices that he can do the hat game in, but there may not be a game.
