Players to watch in spring practice......link

Good read, thanks for sharing. Personally, I think the LBs are the most important positions to watch. Next would be WRs.

I agree. The bloggers name is Atlantic Sooner. I've seen his work before, but didn't know he had his own site. He may have posted here in the past. One thing I like about him is he is an admitted Sooner homer.

BTW, he did address the LB and wide outs. I wasn't crazy about his wide out choices, but you bet, i'll be watching all of them.

I picked this up on Sooner Times site.

A blogger list 13 players to watch in spring practice. It's a really nice read, but I disagree on #1. I personally don't see where Kyler Murray will be on the main stage, maybe next year.

BTW, I love his #3, Neville Gallimore. Here's the link.....

I believe Kyler Murray is an important player to watch because he will be the starting QB in all probability after Mayfield is gone. I believe he is the future kingpin in OU's program, depending on how he progresses and how he becomes a team leader.
Two other players to watch, IMO are:
Center Alvarez, moving from his guard position and replacing team captain Darlington. His successful transition to center will be critical in stabilizing OU's rebuilt offensive line.
Running back Rodney Anderson, coming off a redshirt year after a great high school career. He needs to contribute this year and be ready to assume an even bigger role in 2017, when Perine heads to the NFL.
In addition, true freshman QB Kendall Murray needs to become a solid backup and he needs to do it before September. I cannot assume or even speculate that two walkons (McGinnis and Clark) will prove their readiness. Murray is a good player.

CT, you named the two I'm most interested to see. Do we know for sure if Anderson will be able to play in the spring?

Good read but I disagree w/ #1 & #2. With a Freshman as the back up QB, OU needs to give him all the reps he can handle. Murray can't see the field next year and giving him reps instead of Kendall is a waste of reps.

Yes sir, I read his info on LBs and WRs. Honestly, I don't care who, I care that they step up. ;)

Don't know about Anderson and hopefully someone here has heard something on his injury. I have not read or heard anything on him since he was hurt before last season....maybe no news is good news.

Just a quick question, who is going to be the #1 go to receiver this year ?
I would like to see OU put at least two receivers on the field, that either
one could be the main receiver. Hopefully they can do that.

I just read where Anderson suffered a sprained MCL but by August 28th of last year was up and running and impressing coaches. OU evidently decided to redshirt him given the depth at RB (Perine, Mixon, Ross and Brooks) and maybe to buy more time on his recovery and learning process. The article mentioned that the coaches could have played him right away if needed last season.

I don't know if we'll have a number 1. Know we won't have more than one. We might have two number twos. There will be no Sheps or Broyles in this group.

I think a couple or three might be pretty reliable.

I look for Mark Andrews to be "the guy" and Westbrook and Mead to be impressive as well.

Mead is a high ceiling guy to me.

We've recruited all these big receivers over the last 7 or 8 years and it's only the little guys panning out.

Tracking the ball in flight with good hands is the most underrated factor in being a good receiver. I'm not sure Mead has either. I know of very few guys who have bad hands that turn into good ones. And even fewer who track the ball poorly and improve that. The can get better. But if you're bad at it, it seldom improves from poor to great. I think we have a couple of big guys with possibilities, besides him, especially a couple who have dealt with some injuries.

Plan on attending the Spring game primarily to see Austin and Kyler Murray direct the offense in Sooner uniforms.

Mead has been given every chance to succeed but just can't get it done in game time situations. You have probably hit the nail on the head in your analysis.

I'd say "every chance to succeed" is quite an overstatement.

He's dealt with some drops this past season that were the likely why he would see little to no action after in those games but he made a couple big grabs in our biggest game.

If that sparks confidence to go with ridiculous talent, I think we'd be silly to just toss him away as a bust.

That's the $10,000 question.

BCS, I agree with you most of the time, but Mead has played more than any of the young wides. Uncontested drops more than 2 or 3 times aren't encouraging.

On your side, he was the first young guy Bob praised in his presser today. They have a lot of faith in him. I trust Bob. He must have been a hard working guy. I just want someone who will CTDB consistently.

I wish college tracked advanced stats like they do in the NFL. I'd like to see targeted along with receptions. Does someone track that?

JCon, I promise that the staff is tracking those stats. Guarantee it. But they just aren't publishing them, which I think to be the right policy.

Could've sworn someone here said Westbrook was not guaranteed to even return to personal issues. Hope I'm wrong but has anyone else heard anything about that?

I think he is the best bet to be our "go to" guy next year. Andrews will be a huge help but I think he's much more valuable as a TE in our offense. I have concerns about Mead too, hope he proves me wrong.

Smallwood is another one I think has a chance to step up and be very good but has been hurt a lot.

We went after JUCO WRs so odds are we will start with Westbrook, the JUCO kid (forgot name), and the best of the rest at the other WR spot(s). Most uncomfortable I've felt about our returning WRs since Coach Stoops has been here.

It might have been me on Westbrook Tulsan. If not, I read it somewhere. I have read that Stanvon Taylor maybe moved to wide receiver. He's one of the four being held out because of injuries.

BTW, I'm the one that posted a conversation I had with one of Taylor's high school coaches. He told me Taylor was special, but he would never be a factor because of injury problems. His prediction is on target so far.........

We just called him "coach" at the local watering hole. I have to admit he wasn't that bright when I dealt with him.

I did rent a house to Antwian Jimmerson, former disgraced Booker T Washington head coach in the East Central district. He was a former Tulsa linebacker. He used to give some good inside info.

No worries, was just curious. I went to HS with former coach Travis Hill. He did a great job while he was there.

Do you remember the "haunted house" across from the East Central School? How about the Swedens (sp) grocery store that sold beer to minors?
Yes on the house and I'll take the Fifth (pun intended) on the store. We used to go to Little Joe's too. On Pine and 129th I think. One of us would give him the high sign at the front door then We'd meet him out back. Dang, that was more than 40 years ago.

Great memories.............We had "Mister Jones bait shop" where we
could load up on cheap beer. Mister Jones always asked for an ID. Problem was he couldn't read. HA!

One thing, there was an unwritten rule was you didn't steal from him No way!. It was passed down from generation to generation. We bought beer and we respected him.

Problem was one generation broke the rule. He shot and killed a punk that broke into his shop. He died soon after without being charged. His grandson was a catcher on my baseball team and his sister was a fox.

I still think our #1 performer at WR will be Andrews. While he may be listed as TE, he caught most of his passes & TDs lined up at WR. The guy was a beast last year and I suspect that that trend will continue. He's a nightmare to cover and has a knack to get open & catch the ball.

Totally agree WNAS...I have posted several times, but I saw him at the spring game last year and he was incredible....gotta get the man the ball this year.

I read that Stoops wanted to get him more involved in the passing game. Today another board has an article about Stoops update on Rodney Anderson. Sounds good and it says it was a broken leg. I think it was Oklahoma 247 board.

Andrews is very tough for any LB to cover, that's why he's more dangerous as a TE. BUT...we need a few other real receiving threats for us to be able to fully take advantage of him there. Hoping that happens, could be 2008 offense huge.
