I need a new weapon. I have some scum that have moved into the neighborhood. I live deep in the country and don't feel completely safe with my shotgun. I can't shoot a pistol. (Nerve problems). What's my best choice?

This?

I'm the opposite. I'm a pistol guy, not a rifle guy. I shoot right handed with a pistol, but my dominant eye is my left eye. Not a whole lot of left-handed rifles out there. However, two rifles have my interest.

1. The KelTec CMR-30, a 22 Magnum with a 30 round magazine. It will tear things up.
2. Sig MPX-P 9mm.

I'll probably get the Sig first. After I buy about ten more handguns that I want. ;)

What about an AK? That seems to be rage now days. Remember, I have neuro problems, so I don't know if I could handle the kick back and maintain accuracy. I might just update my shotgun. Double barrel is so out of date......

K2C, I have lots of guns and there is no magic as to which is the best. If you can't shoot a pistol then I assume a revolver is also out of the question. So, your choices are either a shotgun or a rifle. I keep a loaded 9mm S&W MP pistol by my bed as well as a Judge loaded with the new Hornady Critical Defense 410 load.

I recently bought a Hi-Point 9mm Carbine. It is an ugly gun with a few cons against it. However, the cons are mostly about the large amount of composites materials used in the manufacture and the fact that is a little more difficult to breakdown and clean. Also it is kind of ugly and is pretty heavy.

The good things about this carbine is in the areas that count when you are looking for home protection. It is a very accurate weapon right out of the box. I hardly had to make any adjustments as it was very accurate out of the box. The second good point is that it is very reliable. It comes with one 10 round magazine. I bought six more 10 round magazines and two 20 round magazines. The first time I took it to the range I shot about 400 rounds. Once I got the hang of handling this rifle I never had a single problem. Have been to the range a couple of time since. I normally shoot a couple hundred rounds each time and I still haven't had any issues.

While one of the cons of this carbine is that it is a little heavy, that is also a good thing as you will hardly notice any kick back.

I like the 9mm as it is big enough to get the job done and small enough to not have to worry about blowing through the target. I use target rounds for target shooting and load a hollow point for other uses. Another reason I like the 9mm is that it is cheaper than most others. I buy my target rounds for just under $0.25 per round. I buy them a 1,000 rounds per box.

Rifles and shotguns are not the best for personal protection, but if that is all you can shoot then buy one of these carbines.

I'd personally consider an AR over an AK, but I'll let the experts chime in on that. I've never shot either one. Besides, they're dangerous. I hear they get up by themselves and just start shooting people. ;)

Check out the Taurus Circuit Judge. It may be what you need. A 5-shot .410 shotgun revolver. It also shoots 45. I will add it as #3 on my list above. About $500.

EDIT: I read Roy's post after I posted this. He has the Judge, the pistol version of this gun. Good choice. Don''t break into his house.

Actually, the kick, or recoil of the AR-15 is way less than any shotgun. FWIW.
Stay with what you're comfortable with. Just upgrade to say a Remington 870 home defense model.
It holds 5 in the tube and 1 in the chamber. Pretty formidable if you use 00 buck 12 guage.
Downright messy.

Thanks 22. A 410 shell seems a little light for my taste. Do they make it in a 12 gauge?

100% this. Shotgun is the way to go as far as home defense.

My 870 is loaded with buckshot. I'm getting some bird shot for it. Buckshot is overkill for me in my house. I don't want the pellets traveling next door. A hoodlums not going to ask what the load is anyway.

The thing I love about a shotgun is they won't be asking ANYTHING when they hear you rack that pump. The sound is pretty universally known. It's a pretty good deterrent from having to shoot anyone at all. They hear that and they likely will be hauling ass without having to pull the trigger.

I have a friend who once lived in a relatively sketchy apartment complex. He left his unloaded shotgun by the front door. Every single time someone knocked, regardless of who he was expecting or not expecting, he picked up the shotgun and cocked it before he even looked through the peephole. It always brought a giggle to me.

Don't get me wrong. I live in very safe neighborhood if you consider my place. It's a seven mile run in the deep country and my neighbors are all armed and friendly.

The problem is drive by scum that drives the area due to so few of houses. For some reason they think sparse makes us a good place to steal.

BTW, I have an appointment to purchase an AK with an individual tomorrow. I'm a little worried, the guy sounds like a terrorist or maybe even an undercover federal agent. ;)

That's what I'm talking about!!! I have plenty of rifles to choose from, but in the end it's the 12ga shotgun and .45 1911 next to my bed every night.

Get two of these and feed them quality no grains dog food. Be sure to keep them up to date on shots, heartworm pills, and monthy flea and tick prevention. They'll love being out in the country and will guard the house better than any gun. I pity the fool shows up uninvited at night and 350 pounds of asskicker starts running at them.

Funny, but also not so funny. I wake up early around 4:00 am every morning. So, it is normal for me to take my four mile daily walk sometime between 4:00 and 5:30 am. I live in a nice neighborhood that is pretty safe. However, on occasion I have been out when it is totally dark and have met up with someone wearing dark clothes with a hoodie. also, have met up with dogs that have escaped and roaming the neighborhood.

Also, there are lots of Rots and Doberman who occupy backyards and don't act friendly towards me when I am out on my walks. I was attacked by a Rot once that looked like he was the big brother of the two in your photo. So, I always carry my S&W 9mm M&P pistol while out walking so early in the mornings.

After my first encounter with the Rottweiler I have been paranoid about them and Doberman. They are the two breeds that seem to get my attention. So, I do agree with you that if you want some protection they aren't a bad choice. However, a Rot and a good gun are a better choice.

I got kicked out of an apartment complex in Norman for having a cat in my apartment (no pets allowed). I had it for over a year, and management was even aware of it. They just turned their head, since I was a perfect tenant (do my own repairs, always early with payment, clean, etc).
Some new neighbors holed a 150lb Rott up in their 450 sqft 1 bedroom apartment. It, of course, went crazy, tore the place up, and jumped through the window. They told management that they thought it was OK, because they had seen my cat in the window.

FYI, this tip might not work on a giant Rott or Doberman if you're not big and strong yourself, but dogs have extremely weak/no abdomen strength. Pick them up by the hind legs, and they're helpless.

Had a friend/co-worker that was walking his Lab when they were attacked from behind by a Pit. The Lab heard it coming at the last second and confronted the Pit. Obviously, it wasn't going well for the Lab, so my friend picked the Pit up by the back legs and proceeded to look for the owners. After unsuccessfully finding anyone nearby claiming ownership of the dog and his shoulders getting tired of holding it, he proceeded to put it back on the ground, and it started going crazy again. So he lifted it back up again, took it to the nearest tree, and swung it like a bat against the tree to break the hind legs. His Lab ended up succumbing to his wounds a few months later due to liver failure from all of the meds required.
Turns out the owners of the Pit were one of these violent breed rehab specialists with city political ties. The police and animal control were unhelpful in the situation because they knew the owners. The owners even came to his door that night and confronted him about injuring their dog. He ended up selling his Dallas house and moving out to Allen because he was so frustrated with the situation and DPD.

Get an AK and alter it for automatic fire. That way you can spray through the walls of today's cheap houses and kill the whole family.

From a half-mile away.

Good luck.

I didnt read all the posts, but a AR 15 and several 30 round mags will work fine. Inexpensive accurate, and lots of rounds. A half a dozen pops and any potential threat is going to run for the hills. I have a pair of 9mm one for each hand with 15 rd mags and 2 spare twenty round mags (dont know if the 20 cap mags are legal) but cheaper than dirt sold them to me anyway and cheap also. Thats 70 rounds that I can spray in 30 secs. If they are still coming I guess its the home defense shotgun. but no one is getting in thats for sure.

This is a prime example of a person I DO NOT want as a neighbor. Just the idea of living next to someone who talks about spraying 70 bullets in 30 seconds really scares me more than the thought of someone breaking into my home.

Taurus Judge pistol is what you need. It shoots a killer .410 shotgun shell that has alternating combination of metal disks and 00 buckshot. What I keep on hand for the wife when I'm gone. A can't miss weapon. Thiefs worst nightmare.

I want to know how someone is going to be able to find, let alone, lift a 90+ pound Rot in attack mode by his back legs. Personally, I don't think it is possible. :):)

three dobermans and you are set.

need a little more? add a miniature schnauzer or two and you are immune to intrusion. And, you'll never be able to take a nap as the schnauzer will wake you from a coma. They bark at everything.
