Mike Gundy wants

Spring games are boring. Why not play annual OU and O-State out conference games like we did with Texas before the Horns became conference foes? A lot more interesting than playing cupcakes. Or is that too tough a season for the Sooners now that we are SEC members? I hope that’s not a consideration.

I have mixed feelings on playing OSU as an OOC opponent.
I like any good rivalry being continued and this would be a welcome renewal for the state of Oklahoma, much like Texas playing Texas A&M for the state of Texas.
But adding OSU would add to an already brutal schedule.
And for the record, OU this season has Michigan as one of its OOC opponents then there is Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn and LSU.
If there is a tougher schedule in college football, let me know.

No doubt we have a tough schedule but I’d rather continue beating down OSU most years rather than schedule weak teams that don’t give us a true challenge. At my age the chances of me living to see another natty aren’t that good, so I’d rather enjoy beating down our natural rivals like Texas and O-State than play lesser teams just to insure a better record. There’s good arguments for not going this route however I rather watch games that are competitive. But that’s just me.

Why not just schedule a real game OOC every season? I guess a scrimmage is a safer route for him.

Because Joe Castiglione is not in favor of continuing the series. Gundy and Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg are, but it takes two to tango.

Its funny because I have always heard the opposite that it was Gundy and the OSU AD who said they weren’t interested in keeping the series going. I am not doubting you but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a mutial decision by both schools in football.

It makes no sense considering they still play each other in the other sports.

I think you're right. One of the primary factors is that OSU has to play 9 conference games compared to 8 for OU. They already usually play one P4 non-conference game, so that would only leave room for one guaranteed win against a cupcake if they also had to play OU.
