I remember him coming off the bench in the 1968 Bluebonnet Bowl vs SMU after Warmack injured his leg and almost rallied the Sooners with two late TD passes. A try for a two point conversion failed in the closing minutes and OU lost 28-27.
He was kept from starting his years at OU at least in part due to playing behind Warmack, then in 1969, he could not beat out some guy named Mildren.

I met Mickey several years ago. He and my brother-in-law were very good friends & coached together at Bartlesville. I went to a few coaching clinics at OU in the mid 80s with these guys. Beware of coaches on tight expense accounts at coaching clinics. They can fit 12 guys into a hotel room (my room) with two double beds with room to spare.

Not to be picky, just to inform. Mickey's senior year was 1969, no 68. He was listed as the starting quarterback on the depth chart through the spring and the first half of the pre season of 1969. Back then, we didn't start the 10-game season until the third weekend of September. But Jack was moved up to the top of the depth chart late in August, and started the game against Wisconsin in Madison in the opener. Mildren threw a 70 something yard touchdown pass on his first throw as a Sooner, and we put up over 500 yards total offense on the road, and won 48-21.

Mickey was a quality guy. His senior year, things kind of fell apart, when we lost two starting OLinemen and the defense. maybe the only time in the last 80 years when OU ran a three deep secondary, got torched in the conference and despite having his senior classmate Steve Owens win the Heisman, we went only 6-4, including three blowout losses in the conference. In Retrospect, if Mickey had played all year, and Jack had redshirted, we might have had the best team ever had Jack been around for the 1972 season.

A Sooner friend and I were talking about that today, having not heard this sad news. So many guys from the Sooner football team in my four years at OU, are no longer with us. Prayers' for Mickey's family.

Good catch.
I don't recall Ripley's presence after the 1968 season and/or Bluebonnet Bowl that same year. Mike Jones from OKC is the only other QB that I remember on the roster in 1969. Sooner Stats has Ripley listed on the 1969 roster which is deceiving.
As for Mildren, I don't believe he was ever considered to be redshirted given his great talent which far exceeded that of Ripley or Jones.....plus the fact that Mildren was needed to team up with Heisman winner Steve Owens his senior year.
