I know what MS and the rest of the defensive staff and players were thinking.
We have a 3rd string QB, that hasn't started a game since HS. He hasn't played a meaningful snap in CFB. We'll make him try and beat us with his arm and take away the run. Semi sound strategy. But the best way to make a QB with a average to below average arm make mistakes. Confuses him, make him rush, disguise coverage and blitz his ass. Get hands up, show blitz and stay with it. Show zone and delay blitz. Squeeze the gap Galimore was taking a double. When they brought in #7, go big with the big uglies and stuff the run. Paterson would have ran a 4-2-5 with #7, and a 3-4-5 with 3rd string. We tried a 3 man front but without Lampkin. We needed both Galimore and Lampkin upfront on every 3 man front. But bring the house, sometimes. Sellout and make an average inexperienced QB beat you. Instead we played soft and "hoped" for errant throws. Force mistake, don't plan or hope for them.
One of the biggest problems, our are 2 LB's, lack of experience, in calling the front set. Evans was horrible most of last year but he knew, the defense calls. Our guys are not there.....yet.
