Mike Stoops has been the biggest issue with OU's defense. Not THE reason, but one of several.
I suggest looking at the scores of so many games that took over 40 points to win in recent years, with the playoff game loss to Georgia as the "poster child" for OU's porous defenses.
And beating teams in bowl games like Auburn (8-5), Iowa (7-6), Connecticut (8-5) and Stanford (8-5) over the past 9 seasons, while getting mauled vs. ATM and Clemson (twice, giving up 77 points in those two games) and then 54 points to Georgia, is not impressive.
Beating Alabama 45-31 was a nice win, but in my opinion it was against an Alabama team still reeling from its "kick-6" loss to its biggest rival Auburn in the last regular season game. That Alabama team was talented, but played poorly (2 picks, 2 fumbles and several QB sacks as I recall) and appeared to be playing unfocused, as if they did not to play in any bowl without a championship at stake.

Exactly right CT. They didn't have the magic that day but we did. Great Defense make bad O less Offensive so the Sooners would be smart to get a Brent clone to Norman but who thats available ? JC gets paid to find and make this happen I believe ?
ABC's coverage today includes an interview w/ Bob Stoops visiting the booth. Does anyone actually believes that he is not the 'face' of OU?

It gave up 500 yards and 33 points.
I know some of that is attributable to the way our offense plays. But how much?
If you held a gun to my head, I would say our LB core is playing at maybe a "C+" or "B-" level, and our Defensive line at a "C" level. Defensive back field is fine. T. Brown might end up playing on Sundays. Motley has an outside chance to do that too.
I think part of our problem is sheer talent on the front seven. Our run defense isn't scaring anybody. When was the last time we had a D-line man or LB go high in the NFL draft? Is that on MS?
And every time someone screams for MS head, I remember how BV got run out of town on a rail because his defenses were so "awful".

I truly believe you are being overly harsh on the defense.
Do you realize that of 10 OU offensive possessions OU averaged about 5.5 plays/possession. Do you realize those 66 points the offense scored came with OU possessing the ball for about 16:43. Think about that for a minute.
A large part of the reason Baylor ran 101 plays was because the OU offense scored about ONE minute and 45 seconds of possession time. The OU defense barely got any down time before they were right back on the field.
I don't like Mike Stoops as our DC. I wish he was anywhere other than at OU.
However, lets also factor in how damn young this OU team is. We are simply loaded with true and redshirt Freshmen and Sophomores. Count them up yourself. This is a very young team.
I think you are way to hard on the DL and LBers.
Which won't be easy. UT will will field the best defense OU has seen this year, and their DBs are physical. They'll clutch and grab with Brown and CD all the way down the field. They'll try hard to take away our big plays.

Yeah, me too.......after all, OU has only three 5-star and nine 4-star recruits on its 2019 commitment list of 18 players and the class is currently ranked 6th in the nation.
We have no one to blame but ourselves !
I agree 110% with the above. I am concerned that the running game could get stuffed, putting everything on passing game.
