*** Oklahoma and 2024 three-star safety Michael Boganowski have been in a good place for some time. That's not to say that the Sooners aren't in an intense competition to land him. Programs like Michigan and Kansas State are two programs that definitely caught his attention, with another being the Kansas Jayhawks (visited in late March).
With Michigan, the Junction City (KS) safety has built a really strong relationship with Michigan LB coach Christ Partridge. The Wolverines are recruiting him as a linebacker and Boganowski has said he would "likely" take an official to Ann Arbor "sometime this summer."
The other team that is most notably on his radar is the proverbial hometown team Kansas State Wildcats. EMAW's linebacker coach, Steve Stanard, is Boganowski's lead recruiter for the Wildcats. With Junction City and Manhattan (KS) being so close together (20 miles), there is a definite draw there with him an his family. Also, because of the distance and location, the Sooners three-star defensive offer has visited the Wildcats five times since October.
Still, the Sooners and safety coach Brandon Hall have continued to be in a good spot for Boganowski. Oklahoma is also the ONLY program that seems to be recruiting him as a safety, and speaking to a someone well acquainted with Boganowski's recruitment, I was told his body type was "more SEC-esque and (OU) is looking for that type of backend player for the defense moving forward." Now, that doesn't mean that OU and the Jayden Hardy types don't have their place. I just think it means that OU wants more big bodies at safety, but they will also take on some smaller ballhawks if they think they are elite as well.
All that said said, the Junction City standout visited OU for their spring game and one source told me, "The family came up and really enjoyed it at the spring game. They sat around and talked in BV's office for a good while and he clicked really well with the family," the source said. "Even his dad's colonel came up with them (Dad's in military). The colonel is an OU alum, so the visit was a hit."
That same source also made a point to say that they felt "things were in a good place" with OU, Boganowski and his family. Another source told OUinsider that the Sooners staff was in constant communication with him, and that Brandon Hall was by Junction City last week. The source said, "Bogo is a priority and was one of Hall's first stops when they hit the road after the spring game." I am told that Hall spent several days in Kansas and made stops at all the JUCOS before heading down to Tulsa to see 2024 Tulsa Union four-star DB Devon Jordan (more on him tomorrow).
As for an official visit with OU? He has yet to tell Parker or I when they will take place, but a few sources around Norman feel it will be in that June 16-18 range. That's when the the Sooners hold their annual ChampUBBQ Weekend.
Regardless, I have input a Future Cast for Boganowski to Oklahoma and continue to feel the Sooners are in pole position for him.
*** Another Sooners safety target to keep an eye on is 2024 four-star Missouri City (TX) ATH Josh Lair.
Oklahoma was by to see Josh Lair recently and sources feel this thing is moving much better in OU direction than it previously was just a few short weeks ago. There is even talk of the Sooners potentially getting Lair up for an official this summer. Also talk of a potential unofficial visit a bit earlier if his uncle can get things worked out, but nothing is set just yet, according to what I am told.
So, what's the change? Well, the Sooners landed 2024 four-star WR Zion Kearney recently. A source told me that Kearney and Lair are very close and that is playing a bit into, with Kearney really turning up the heat recruiting Lair to join him in Norman. Still, the Sooners have a long ways to go, in my opinion.
Programs like Arkansas, Texas, TCU, LSU, and Baylor are going to be difficult to overcome, but I know BV is really high on Lair and thinks he could be really good as a safety. Unfortunately, LSU and Kerry Cooks seem to have the upper-hand here. So until Lair gets up to Norman, I would be in a believe it when I see frame of mind.
Still, this went from non-existent to now talking about possible visits, so we will at least keep our eye on it and update you all when we hear anything else worthwhile. Until then, the safety class continues to be trending toward a Jayden Hardy and Michael Boganowski tandem in the Sooners 24K class.
