*** This is who I hinted on earlier today on hitting the portal and I promised you some back story.
Today, the Sooners went to JR RB Gavin Sawchuk to talk about restructuring his contract. First, let’s make it clear Sawchuk didn’t want to leave and several staffers wanted Sawchuk to stay.
However, with the new valuation process and how OU is operating — along with addition of Jadyn Ott out of the portal — there was a push to see if Sawchuk would renegotiate his contract.
Naturally, after Sawchuk agreed to a his contract in January, Sawchuk and his family felt it wasn’t in their best interest to agree to a different contract. Per sources close to Sawchuk, the RB was already on the lower end and not near what some feel he might have been. Again, this decision to enter the portal wasn’t easy at all for the JR running back.
During the spring, Sawchuk was working with one’s and rotating with Xavier Robinson. Sources told OUInsider that with the new profit sharing down the line and Ott and Sawchuk being so similar in skill sets, that the move was made by Jim Nagy and the new scouting/front office at OU to see if they could make it work with Sawchuk. As we all know now, the negotiations hit a wall and Sawchuk reluctantly decided to enter the portal.
Again, this comes as a huge surprise, with Sawchuk a favorite of the staff and teammates alike. Another instance that reminds all that this is now a business and that anything can happen at any point.
I expect Arizona State and a few others to come pretty hard after Sawchuk.
More once we get it.
