Baker arrested.......

Let's see, 21 years old. Old enough to drink, old enough to go to jail. He is educated, he was acting like a punk. I don't call that a leader. He should be grateful to have the ability and opportunity. I give him zero excuses.

OK, so kick him off the team. Strip him of his scholarship. Let's show the world of sports how clean OU is going to be in the future.

Not happening.

Cockiness isn't in play here.
Neither is saying a young man who's turning 22 in April is a kid.
No argument about his comparison to Perine.....I never would have realized the difference if you hadn't pointed it out.

True, even at the expense of having his "babies" embarrass the program, the university and OU's fan base.
Winning can be achieved without having a "whore" philosophy of winning at all costs.

I'm not embarrassed.

I think what he did was stupid, lacked some character, and cost him money. But none of his problems effect me. None of us are pure. WE might be closer to purity at our age, but at 21, few are/were pure and I'm not ripping the guy for stupidity on his behalf.

Throw me TDs, win me games.

We've all had "stupid moments" in our youth.....but many of us have never been a high profile D-1 athlete, a team captain, a Heisman candidate and arguably the best all around quarterback in OU history when we screwed up.
Mayfield is not just a "kid".
I don't think anyone is throwing rocks at 'WHAT He Did', so much. That was Young and Foolish, and we've all been there/done that to a greater, or lesser degree. What really gets me is that AFTER seeing the 'Walls come tumbling down' for some of his team mates, and realizing the HUGE Effort needed to correct the developing stigmas on OU, he contributes to the problem, not the solution. Baker knows his Poster Boy Position is central to the leadership of the team, going forward...He, along with the Big XII Conference, campaigned for it, fought for it, got it, and now he puts himself and the University in a most unfavorable light...

I'm mostly just disappointed, and it's my own fault... from having expectations. I expected Extraordinary Behavior, but only got Ordinary...

Down the street from me is a 16 year old kid that played football and is now fighting cancer. I really don't care if he plays or not. My opinion of a leader is not him. To me he is spoiled. I am waiting to see what really happened.

to be honest if Mixon doesnt bludgeon Molitor this really isnt a big deal if Baker gets off with misdemeanor fines and court cost...other than maybe he gets to sit a half...IMO

Its sucks for him because his "Hero Cape" image is stripped of him but other than that and getting to see Hoover write some scathing comments and hearing losur fans bitch and moan... by summer it will be a nothing deal....if and until he has to sit for a time in a game.

Seems to me that gridiron prima donnas are granted special considerations that are not provided society's average Joe. Why should they abide by the laws of society when they're treated as if they are above the law. I'm sick of the privilege our gridiron heroes receive. I pull his same stunt in my life and my employers can me like a tuna. My ability to support my family has vanished.

Bob will not show the fortitude this situation requires as he has to protect his talented QB if he aspires to see another playoff appearance. If he had ANY cajones, he would suspend BM for the 1st 2 games of the season. That's right. The 1st 2 games. OUr most important game on the 2017 schedule is not UT or Okie State. It's tOSU. If BM has to sit out the most important game - a potential legacy game - of the year, perhaps Bob will have sent the proper message throughout the program, university, nationally and to Baker.

Baker is NO kid and his actions not only spit on himself but, more importantly, OUr university. We will most likely win every game on our schedule with tOSU being the only game up for grabs. Win or lose that game, we will still have an excellent chance to get back into the playoffs. Wouldn't hurt, imho, for Baker to sweat out the Buckeye game from the spotlight of the bench.

Alas, Bob will not be so bold. There's a game to be won.

I see Mayfield getting a mild punishment, then some here will pour on the "I told you so" rhetoric claiming reactions to Mayfield's actions were overblown....then, Mayfield starts against Ohio State.....and the latest stain on OU, while not erased, is forgotten. The Sooner Nation is all smiles again.

So what if Stoops sits Mayfield for two games, what message does
that send to him and the rest of the team ? Nothing. Period.
Before I set him out for any games, I would start him out
on the offensive line against the biggest and baddest
defensive lineman the other team had and hope we had
about two overtimes. This incident sickens me that a grown
man in his position would do this. Then again if you don't
expect anything your not disappointed.

That is, IF the Sooners win !

Bah... I'm reserving my right to pass judgment after the Ohio State game. If Baker loses, he should have been kicked off the team, and Bob Stoops is a moron. If he wins, that cop was just being a big jerk-bully to my bro and should be on paid leave for a week to think about his mistakes. :D

Don't straddle that fence without a Saddle, JCon! :p

I guess we will see. They don't arrest people for doing nothing. At least normally.

A guy on the SEC network said Stoops should follow Nick Saban's lead of disciplining players

SEC Network analyst Booger McFarland doesn't believe Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops should suspend quarterback Baker Mayfield for next season's opener, citing precedent Alabama's Nick Saban set during last year's offseason with Cam Robinson.

McFarland on Sunday spoke freely on Twitter about several topics involving college football's biggest stories in recent days, but may strike a nerve with those in Tuscaloosa and Norman:

Booger McFarland "If I'm Bob Stoops I don't suspend Baker Mayfield 1 game.. Saban didn't suspend Robinson at all last year What's the difference ?"

— Booger https://twitter.com/SECbooger/status/835887108501929984

"Saban handled Robinson and teammate Hootie Jones' arrests on weapon and drug charges internally and did not further discipline his players with a loss of playing time. Robinson and Jones were charged with possession of marijuana, but the district attorney later decided not to prosecute either player.

Mayfield faces charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and has a hearing scheduled for Monday".

I agree to some extent. Meaning, the good kid, the starting QB left Norman for Aggie after being benched for Baker. So choose your battles w/ image carefully. A guy that shines w/ character but has struggles on the field or a guy that is cocky as all hell, has worts but gets the job done.

No one is advocating such punishment.
And bet the farm that on September 9th, Mayfield starts against Ohio State.

Well then what are you advocating. There sure is a lot of nagging, bitching, and complaining that the team you cheer for is now tarnished. So exactly what would you do to Baker CT?

True but like it or not the actions of these players come back and reflect on him, his staff and most of all how the media and people in general look at the program.

Well then, he can't win for losing then. Because if you think that one can recruit 85 athletes to play for OU that will not have off the field issues and still win Championships, you're kidding yourself.

I guess you can expect certain things in the world but one is going to be disappointed greatly by doing so.

Baker is not the first OU player and will not be the last OU player to get himself in trouble. Of the 85 or so on the roster today, I would say at least 5% will have an issue sooner or later.

Pretty much like it should be IMO. Being arrested and charged does not mean one is innocent or guilty. Street law, meaning the cops did their job to some extent. They got a problem off the street for the safety of the general public and the one being arrested. Court law dictates what really happened, why and the punishment if any is applied.

who knows it could have been some Arky cop wanted to make a name for himself for the pride of pig sooey land....

i can see Baker helping a friend get out of a fight and then talking trash to the cops when the guys in the fight start lying about what happened and Baker then goes off on them bows up, cops tell him to shut up but but Baker doesnt stop...i can see that happening.

I'm confused. Are you saying that is an acceptable circumstance?
I've been in plenty of situations where an out of control officer was gunning for anyone to make a move, and even when I was drunk, I wasn't dumb enough to be that person.

Paying off fines and court costs aren't so bad...long as you get Elle Woods as your attorney!

no what i am saying yes he did it. but its magnified to 10th degree, why read more into that what was written. I can see how this happened due to Baker being with the chip he carries on his shoulder...no more than that. why be so damn judgemental

he was dumb for being in arky to begin with. with those dynamics i can see how this got out of control

I hear you. I never thought it was that egregious to begin with. Like Senior Sooner said, this is happening multiple times a night in every college town across America. I think a lot of people are just surprised it had to be Baker, but you're right, he's a cocksure individual which doesn't jive well with imbibing. Better to go from very reserved to normal operation when properly lubed rather than from cocky to straight up dumbass.

"Loser fans"....I suspect I've been called worse. Good that this doesn't eat at you, and I'm serious about that. Not trying to be a smart ass. As I posted, some fans aren't bothered with Baker's on field antics. I am. This is sorta the same kind of deal. But those of us that are concerned about what happened in Fayetteville aren't loser fans. I can assure you of that. Taking me out of the list, just check out the great Sooner fans/posters that have expressed their displeasure and disappointment for what may come to the PROGRAM....not to Baker personally. On the other hand, I respect everyone's take. Basically, I've discovered that there aren't many bad fans, if any that post here. Post more often.

One reason why I have been making jokes about it is I have no control over what players do or what punishment should or should not be given by a Coach. Does no good for me to worry about things that I have no control over. Either that or I am just getting used to this kind of crap from a Sooner Player. Either way I won't lose any sleep over it.

This big time. We as fans have absolutely no control on who comes through the OU program. The only control we have is either to continue to support the program we all enjoy and love or not to. Hence my take on the whole thing. I'm personally not bothered or concerned. Baker is not my son. Neither is Mixon. Molitor is not my daughter and Stoops is only the HC of my favorite college football. I'll still support them all, wear the colors and I'm not even close to being embarrassed to do so. I enjoy the sport of the game. Players and Coaches will come & go and just cycle through my team.

I admire your resolve, WNAS. One day I may get to that point, but I'm only 70 and have been the way I am since I was 10 years old so it ain't easy to change. :) But I get you. Boomer!

Exactly WNAS. Pro football players are gown men and have done and will do far worse than having a few too many and acting a fool. Heck I was still a kid up until I turned 49 last year, now I am just a tired old man getting ready to turn 50 in April that wants to be a kid again chasing tail and drinking beer. Ah the good ole days. Enjoy your youth while you can Baker, it goes by faster than you think it will and its even tougher to let go of it.

I doubt that any of us believe that we have any control over any facet of 'The Program', but I'm an Ol' Broad who is either 'fur it, or agin it' and I'm All In on OU Football, and YES! when things like this most recent POS occur, it hurts my heart! It is something that didn't NEED to happen...SHOULDN'T have happened, and it changes more than what's apparent right this minute. It's NOT about 'Baker had too much to drink, and showed his butt'...It's about we were just beginning to climb out of that dark place that the Mixon Incident put us in, and we were given the opportunity to start over, if you will, and put that, and the DeDe Deal, and the Parish Cobb Crap behind us...New Year...New Game! This set back the program...One step forward; two, back...H**L YES, I am personally bothered and concerned!

Great post Senior Sooner. I've always believed and have posted many, many times that fandom is different for each of us. We are linked together by our love & support of the Sooners but each of us have a different take on things while doing so. It's what makes this board rock & roll, and you're one of the best rockers here!
