Whatever punishment is or isn't handed down, Mayfield's behavior is disappointing, unacceptable and an embarrassment for OU and fans.

Operative word here is Disappointing. Fairly, or unfairly, as a Team Leader, Baker is held to a higher standard...He's under a Huge Microscope, and He fumbled! Because Bob has shown a degree of leniency with previous offenders, he may have to put the hammer down on Baker, and go harder than he might have, before this 'Losing Streak' began. Today, Bob is probably second-guessing his handling of previous Off-the-Field-Incidents, along with the DOK staff and many others in The Sooner Nation...If 'Bad Boy Behavior' can bring down Barry Switzer, it can bring down Bob Stoops...

If Mayfield gets "harder" punishment, what would that involve ? Stoops likely will do whatever he can to have Mayfield start the Ohio State game on 9/08....as Stoops is evidently more focused on winning games than player behavior.
Does this really surprise anyone? I love Baker, BUT I have always thought he was a hot head and I didn't like it when he showed it on the field. Some do, I don't. I really feel sorry for Bob.

It's not just OU who has this problem, most every other school has their own brand of idiots.
As for feeling sorry for Stoops, I don't. He's a multi-millionaire; he (like Switzer) cannot baby sit these kids 24-7 BUT has the wherewithall to see that Someone does

To me and everyone else here, OU is not every other school. Why can't OU try to be the exception rather than the norm ?
Why can't they make Raising Cane's "Peel For Love" sweepstakes a little bit easier to win? I would have loved winning $100,000 for once...
In retrospect, I think it's a stretch to expect OU to be an American university's version of St. Peter's Basilica. As long as Bob is not letting his program run as loose as Art Briles' Baylor football team, I think OU will be fine.
Realistically, no one expects OU to be a convent....but saying Bob is not letting his program run as loose as Art Briles' program is akin to saying, "You know, for a fat girl, you don't sweat much".
247 has posted a story from an sec wonk saying Saban set the standard last year for not punishing (felonious activities on his team) so there is that precedent

So that must further legitimize my earlier statement that only a slap on the wrist is forthcoming.
Given all the good things going on with recruiting, stadium and facilities upgrades and a potentially very good team on the horizon, my bet is Stoops sweeps this under the carpet and moves on.....unless something more damaging is revealed in the police report tomorrow.

Baker Mayfield is a Sooner team captain, the quarterback for OU, a two year starter, an All American, a 2016 Heisman finalist, and an expected Heisman finalist for 2017. He isn't the average college athlete. And he should never act like one. This incident is bigger because of what Baker has accomplished and what he represents. There's probably more to this story.
That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying we shouldn't buy into the hyperbole being spewed by the media that OU is a corrupt football program "focused only on winning". Most everyone in this thread is overreacting, for one because we don't even know the facts, at least not yet, regarding Mayfield's offense. #ReserveJudgment
The bad thing is it does tarnish Baker and his image more than anything ...the media are idiots about crap like this and will blow it up like an atom bomb as opposed to what they did with 20+ women being assaulted at BU, as for Mixon that was like 3 years ago hes gone...As for OU and Bob...it stings for them but win and OU is back where it is, only to some of the few self righteous will carry this till death....this is nothing compared to what OU has been through in the past and we still call that Coach "the King" OU and Bob will be fine in time...the one that it hurts is Baker sure he may miss the first game and it may cost him a Heisman it may not....I really dont know if this really hurts the NFL opportunities or not for Baker if anything it just shows how dumb he was for going to Arky to begin with WTH was he thinking...
A couple of things: First, these are misdemeanors. The guy above who said it was a felony to flee (even on foot) is wrong. Second, we do not know all of the evidence. Let's not listen to one side of the story and draw conclusion so. Plus, he's a fiery guy, which is what this amounts to, even if true. Just a lot of overreaction as far as I'm concerned.
He should have known Bobby Petrino was ousted from there all because Petrino had a sexual relationship with an Arkansas student.
They are self-proclaimed "Christians" in Arkansas, yet their state has a history of racism and oppression much like the rest of the South. I believe they still have some of the Jim Crow laws in their state's constitution.
I've always got the impression by how he carries himself on the field at times that he is a punk. This event I think helps to solidify my original analysis.
This is not about guilt or innocence or overreacting....at this time. This IS about Mayfield embarrassing OU.
But rest assured that Mayfield will start against Ohio State.
I was only going by the report on CBS but he was initially charged with a felony and it was reduced to a misdemeanor. For the record though in the state of Arkansas fleeing on foot could result in a Class D felony as described below.
3) If serious physical injury occurs to any person as a direct result of the fleeing on foot, the fleeing on foot offense is a Class D felony.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department’s arrest report, Mayfield was picked up for public intoxication at 2:56 a.m. and cited for misdemeanor disorderly conduct, felony fleeing the scene -- Guerin Emig of the Tulsa World reports that has been reduced to a misdemeanor -- and misdemeanor resisting arrest. Mayfield was released on bond early Saturday afternoon. His court hearing is set for Monday morning.

Every big time program is focused on winning but the problem lies with the past happenings. OU and Bob Stoops has just come off the Mixon attack from the media, then the Westbrook story breaks and now the Baker story once again puts the media attention on Stoops and OU. Fair or unfair these players are young adults and should understand that their actions off the field can affect the way other folks think about a program good or bad.
What did anyone think the reaction would be from the media or other fan bases after all the bad publicity from Mixon and Westbrook a year ago? The media loves stories like these and jump all over them while rarely reporting the good actions of others from the team. Its the world we live in today.
He is pretty mouthy on the field, probably mouthed off to the Police too I bet. Being a walk on one would think he would be pretty humble and thankful for the opportunity to play at OU, guess not.

Don't forget about Frank Shannon and his sexual assault issue. I am getting tired of this behavior. Baker should have been out building homes for the poor, or performing some other work for humanity. Just a waste.

I get focused on the here and now, and then I start recalling other past incidents. Clean up your act OU, getting to be ridiculous.
Kids these days? Are you kidding or just forgetting? Kids have been arrested for this action for MANY, MANY years. This is absolutely nothing new. I see no increase, if anything, most likely a decrease when comparing the ratio to the population etc. What I do see is a 24/7 coverage of multiple cable news including the general population all walking around w/ phones that have video cameras. Because we see/hear more about these things these days doesn't mean there is an increase.
Let's be honest here, I'm personally very happy that social media & phones w/ video wasn't around when I was young and bullet proof. As I said earlier, stupid is as stupid does. I've clearly had my stupid moments. Most of us have.
We've all had "stupid moments" in our youth.....but many of us have never been a high profile D-1 athlete, a team captain, a Heisman candidate and arguably the best all around quarterback in OU history when we screwed up.

Disagree. Whether you like it or not, whether you accept it or not, OU football already has a black eye and has for 30+ years. Baker getting drunk didn't give it a black eye. Bottom line, in the realm off CFB, there are plenty of 'fat girls' that don't sweat and on this list sits OU.
Let's see, 21 years old. Old enough to drink, old enough to go to jail. He is educated, he was acting like a punk. I don't call that a leader. He should be grateful to have the ability and opportunity to play football. I give him zero excuses. He will be 22 in April.

Winning can be achieved without having a "whore" philosophy of winning at all costs.
He is a kid. He's a kid that plays D1 football but he's a kid. I don't condone what he has done. But get real CT.... Because he plays football for OU, a Team Capt, and Hreisman runner up does not take the stupid out of people. He is who he is. As Oklabama posted earlier, there has always been a side of cockiness to him. It's what makes him the D1 athlete, a QB that no D1 school offered a scholly to. It's this same cockiness that made him a Team Captain, and ultimately a Heisman candidate.
Bottom line, he isn't a Samaje Perrine type person. Never has been and never will be.
