BV season Grade

OFFENSE:

QB: Dillon Gabriel - 70 - Passing game had some ugly moments but most weren't on him IMO.
RB: Eric Gray - 100 - Every time I think he can't carry this offense more, he does it.
WR: Drake Stoops - 71 - Had a nice spell for a minute and then was rarely seen again.
WR: Marvin Mims - 50 - There's something wrong and I don't know what it is but suddenly he can't catch.
TE: Daniel Parker - 60 - Can't say I noticed him much.
TE: Brayden Willis- 78 - Why can he not get a look in an offense with ZERO intermediate passing game? Still blocked extremely well.
OT: Anton Harrison - 81 - I didn't think he had a great game in pass pro but did a nice job leading the way on the ground.
OG: McKade Mettauer - 70 - Slow and steady keeps the position.
C: Andrew Raym - 75 - Sooners did a nice job with West Virginia and thought Raym was good before the injury.
OG: Chris Murray - 73 - Costly penalty (playing out of position) but largely thought he was good.
OT: Wanya Morris - 65 - Thought he, again, looked highly volatile. It's all peaks and valleys with Morris.

Offensive Average: 72.1 (793)

DEFENSE:

DE: Reggie Grimes - 70 - Had something of a resurgence, was definitely better all around.
NT: Isaiah Coe - 80 - Was the lone interior defender making plays.
DT: Jeffrey Johnson - 65 - I just never noticed him making an impact.
DE: Ethan Downs - 81 - His best game of the year by a mile for me, was consistent in pressure and, as always, his pursuit.
LB: Danny Stutsman - 75 - Thought he played outstanding in the first half but that miss on the final drive against Greene is brutal.
LB: David Ugwoegbu - 64 - Find a time in this game where he wasn't higher than his WVU counterpart.
CH: DaShaun White - 83 - Another really good performance from White, he's just one of the few guys really seeing what's happening.
CB: Woodi Washington - 81 - Touchdown was a tough give away but he tackled well and broke up several more.
CB: C.J. Coldon - 78 - Man it's hard to ignore that WVU just rarely looked his way.
S: Justin Broiles - 70 - Didn't notice him, which is often a good sign, before the injury.
S: Billy Bowman - 81 - Thought he looked like the guy we have all expected.

Defensive Average: 76.2 (838)

SPECIAL TEAMS:

K: Zach Schmit - 50 - The two field goals were misses but were also brutal asks, still the kickoff OOB was just bad.
P: Michael Turk - 78 - Kicked it pretty well in some awful conditions.
KR: Jalil Farooq - 83 - Give him every touch you can.
PR: Marvin Mims - 75 - Actually made a play in the return game.

Special Teams Average: 71.5 (286)

Key Reserves:

DT: Jordan Kelley - 72 - Fumble recovery at least seemed big and had some good moments.
DE: Marcus Stripling - 74 - Thought he created consistent pressure for the first time all day.
DE: R. Mason Thomas - 71 - The face mask was just brutal but Thomas did apply some good pressure.
S: Robert Spears-Jennings - 72 - Man, just impossible not to see how much potential he has.

Reserves Average: 72.5 (290)

Team Average: 73.9 (2217)

My Overall Grade: 52

Breakdown:
I'll be honest with you, I've got no idea how I can get the score lower on some of the players to get the average where it belongs. There were some decent performances but not just having a dogfight but losing to the worst team in the Big 12 that even with a win over Oklahoma (remember when that was meaningful?) the Mountaineers may STILL fire their head coach.

This is embarrassing on just about every level for the Sooners and there just have to be some severe questions asked within the walls in Norman. After wins over Kansas and Iowa State I kind of started to buy into some progress being made. Even after Baylor I was willing to say 'that's a decent team that is starting to figure it out'. But I don't care what the situation is, this tweet should NEVER be true:

Talk to me about improving talent, ok, I can get there. Talk to me about having to change the culture, ok, I can get there. But losing to a team who'd love to have your talent problems, benched their quarterback, and is on the verge of getting their coach fired and they have a better culture and talent?

Come on, again, 'that's not good enough' for a place like Oklahoma.

Scoring Standard:

100-82: Playoff Contender
82-74: Big 12 Title Contender
74-65: Bowl Game Participant
65-0: 'I'll be hoooome for Christmas
So when can we start giving grades to the coaches?
This is a joke when will you people wake up?
Y’all laughed at me all year saying he ain’t the guy

STAFF PICKS: West Virginia

@BPrzybylo - This is a rough one because the only thing you could learn about Oklahoma after this game at West Virginia is bad. If OU is able to take care of business, it’s a big duh, so what type of moment.

But if the Sooners are to struggle? Oh boy.

Even though WVU has played much better at home, taking TCU to the limit and beating Baylor, OU shouldn’t have any issues if it does what it should.

We’ve said that a few times this season, so all bets are off. To begin, if Dillon Gabriel and the offense can get off to a hot start, the crowd in Morgantown is going to disappear. WVU is 3-6 and most fans are hoping Neal Brown will be out the door. Give those fans a reason to leave, nice and early.

You don’t have to get cute with it. Lean on running back Eric Gray to be the force he has been in the last month, and let the running game open it up for Gabriel and the receivers to take advantage.

J.T. Daniels felt like he’d be a great fit for the Mountaineers, but it hasn’t exactly panned out that way. He’s coming off a rough outing in the blowout loss at Iowa State.

If OU plays clean without any takeaways, the Sooners cruise toward becoming bowl eligible. Add in a takeaway or two from the Sooners defense, and this could be a confidence-building type of game.

It’s just hard to know how difficult OU is going to make Saturday for itself. Sooners get the job done, with a three-touchdown outing by Gabriel, and all eyes go toward Bedlam and hoping OU can finish the way it wants to vs. Oklahoma State.

OU 31, WVU 19.

@Eddie_Rado - West Virginia isn't a very good football team. Think that's where we start this week. It's a game Oklahoma should win. But then again I don't know if Oklahoma is a very good football team.

The scary thing? This Mountaineers team plays much better in the cozy digs of Milan Puskar Stadium. To the tune of averaging No.9 nationally in offensive production. Gulp. Oklahoma has to play better defensively. When the bar is set as low as it is right now ... please just have moments.

Offensively? Dillon Gabriel and friends should have a field day. You think OU is bad defensively? Take a look across the field on Saturday at the Mountaineer unit.

Eric Gray once again has a big day. Gabriel and Marvin Mims connect for a couple big bombs and it's the OU defense that makes a handful of plays in the turnover department.

@Josh_M - If Oklahoma is going to have any semblance of a functional season, it's got to start here. I'm not saying 8-4, 9-4, etc. is what anyone was dreaming of coming into the year but it might just be enough for the train to get back on the tracks as the Sooners head into bowl season and then, obviously, 2023.

As Eddie has said, this is probably the worst team in the big 12 and there's just no reason for Oklahoma to not go to Morgantown and handle business. That being said, the Mountaineers have been considerably better at home than on the road after getting manhandled in places like Austin, Lubbock, and Ames in recent weeks.

To me this just comes down to the defense playing functional football and getting enough stops to keep putting the ball in Dillon Gabriel's hands.

The vertical passing game should be there as West Virginia is a bad mix of young and injured in the secondary.

Blend that with a rush defense that while featuring a pair of quality defensive lineman in Dante Stills and Jordan Jefferson has struggled to stop the run game. With the Sooners really finding their feet in that department it feels like good things can, and possibly will, come on the ground.
