NORMAN --- After an impressive performance on Friday night, the Sooners were unable to carry the momentum into Saturday's doubleheader with West Virginia.
Oklahoma's offense was effective early in game one of the doubleheader, as the first run of the game was put on the board in the first inning after an error by West Virginia. OU led 1-0 headed into the second.
After being held to zero hits the night before, the Mountaineers' quickly changed that during game one on Saturday. Off of a wild pitch, West Virginia tied the game at 1-1 going into the third.
The Sooners regained momentum in the third after an Easton Carmichael RBI, but it quickly went downhill from there. Brendan Girton was given the nod to start on the mound, but was pulled in the fourth inning after West Virginia's bats were getting hot. He finished the contest with three runs allowed.
It was all Mountaineers' from that point on, with West Virginia jumping out to a 9-2 lead in the seventh and winning 9-5. This marked Oklahoma's first loss in conference play.
After splitting the first two games of the series, it all came down to the Saturday night clash. Oklahoma went with lefty Jamie Hitt on the mound, but the Mountaineers kept their momentum from the earlier game.
West Virginia started the game fast and never looked back. After two home-runs in the first inning, OU found themselves down 0-4 going into the bottom of the first. After being unable to get the bats going, Oklahoma exited the first down 0-4. After going down 0-6 in the second, Kyson Witherspoon replaced Hitt on the mound.
The Sooners' offense started gaining momentum in the third after an Easton Carmichael sacrifice fly and a Michael Snyder RBI single cut the lead down to 2-6, but despite the momentum the Sooners' bats went cold. Oklahoma lost 8-3 despite Witherspoon's 11 strikeouts and one hit in. 7.2 innings-pitched.
After losing the series to West Virginia, Oklahoma moves to 7-2 in the conference and will face Oral Roberts on Tuesday in Norman.
