OUI 2024 Survivor Pool - Week 1

The OUI Survivor Pool is back! Often imitated, but never matched. As usual, we'll start off right be opening it up a week early so we can maximize the number of participants. Everyone here is invited.

For those that have never played before, the concept is to successfully "survive" the college football season, picking a new undefeated FBS team each week, and advancing if they win. While the rules are simple, surviving for the long haul isn't as easy as you might expect!

GROUND RULES:
  1. Your pick must be undefeated coming into the week.
  2. You can only use each team once per season.
  3. Your pick must have a game that week.
  4. Your pick must win their game.
  5. Your pick has to be submitted before their game kicks off.
Fail any of those five tests, or forget to make a pick, and you're out. Changing picks prior to kickoff is okay, but I ask that you DON'T EDIT POSTS. Administering this thing is way easier if you just add your changed pick to the bottom of the thread.

I'll try to post the prior week's results and start a thread for people to submit the next week's picks each Monday.

Note that there are a handful of games this week, which I consider "Week 0". For the purposes of the Survivor Pool, we don't submit picks for Week 0. Your picks are for Week 1 (the weekend that OU and almost everyone else kicks off).

The more of us that participate, the more fun it will be. Last year we had 291 contestants. How many can we get this season?

A quick hats off to last year's champions, @Klsparks11 and @StlSooner19 .

6 Years ago today, my father passed.

My wife and I were at the game watching OU dismantle FAU. My father was watching at his home with my mother and nephew. They ended up going to the ER as he wasn't feeling well, which they did ever so often those days due to his diabetes. It took a while to get in touch with us because wifi wasn't good in the stadium then. We left the game in the 3rd and began our 2 hr drive back to Texas.

I received the call I've always dreaded that he had a heart attack and passed.before we arrived at the hospital ER. My father had always been my hero and it hit me hard. I deal with it well and have for several years but I still think of him every day.

He loved being a father and grandfather. He was born and raised in Oklahoma, which is why I am a rabid Sooner fan. One of my first Sooner memories was "the kick" against the OSU. He was proud to be a Christian and an Army veteran. He flew the American flag every day and would salute it each morning when he went out to get the newspaper. Some on this site reached out with kinds words at that time and I will always remember the support.

God bless!

Some Late Night thoughts on the Temple Rewatch

Watching the game back a second time tonight after watching with friends and family on Friday. A few (unsolicited) thoughts and observations:

1. I’ve been watching the offensive line on every offensive snap. Not an oline expert by any means, but I don’t think it was quite as terrible as most folks on this board. Don’t get me wrong, it was bad, but I think there is hope. They got some decent push/movement in the run game. I do think assignment and knowing “where they were working to” was subpar, but, to be expected in game one. Sexton and Febechi aren’t the problem. The three transfers were glaring weaknesses. I’ve counted at least 5 first half plays where Tarquin hasn’t touched a defender post-snap. He gets no push in the run game. Brown is just simply not a starting P5 tackle, let alone SEC tackle. Not trying to be harsh, but that’s a complete miss from our staff. Hatchett is really underwhelming. Honestly, all three of those guys don’t move well and don’t seem strong enough to play this level. If any of those three guys are starting come conference play, we are in major trouble.

2. Speaking of OLine, I think our best long term bet will be Jake Taylor RT, Febechi RG, Hickman (or Everett/Bates short term) C, Sexton at LT. Pray one of the young guys can step in at LG and give some type of production. Keep all the transfers not named Hickman off the field.

3. This has been the most fun I’ve had watching an OU defense in five years. Effort, swagger, intensity. I know it’s Temple, but the ingredients are there to be special. If they can stay healthy and get above-expected pass rushing production, look out.

4. I think it will be hard to keep #11 off the field defensively. Also love the future potential of #24. So many athletes all over the field on that side of the ball.

5. Not an excuse, but the field really does seem to be in rough shape. Guys slipping and sliding everywhere.

6. It’s been talked about plenty, but Hester and Thompson are going to need to step up. Our passing game won’t have margin for error with alligator arms in traffic and uncontested drops. Personally, I think losing Farooq is a way bigger issue than most.

7. Looking at the larger CFB landscape, there are plenty of teams who legitimately struggled against weak competition in their openers (Michigan, South Carolina, Oregon, Wisconsin, etc.). In the grand scheme of things, I think OU is in a great spot.

8. Speaking of teams struggling in their opener…Houston…woof. Our defense should be salivating for next Saturday.

Rewatched the game…

Sorry for the long read. No more coaching for me and I need my fix lol

1. I know its one game and against Temple but this defense is DIFFERENT. They have a confidence that I haven’s seen since maybe the 03-04 team. And the scary thing is we were basic AF! We are 3 deep in every position and might not have to blitz to get QB pressure! G-Baby played his ass off last night but the guy who stood out for me was Dolby. I could be wrong but it looks like he makes a lot of the calls on the field. There was a 3rd down play on Temple’s scoring drive that they converted on and he was going crazy trying to get the call right because he knew they were compromised. That guy is a DUDE. My worry has always been the middle of the field. If we have that on lock then Jesus take the wheel!

2. This may sound crazy but the offensive line wasn’t as bad as it looked. Not saying they were good but many of the issues are assignment flaws that will be fixed with reps. For example, lets say the center and guard were combo blocking, the guard would go 2nd level to soon leaving the center with no leverage allowing an easy win for the defender. Hickman going down ****ed up the flow but this group hasn’t gotten many reps due to injuries and just weren’t staying on their blocks long enough. I can work with the interior guys. #54 has a mean steak.. The OTs worry me especially in pass pro ESPECIALLY Brown. He is BAD bad. Multiple times he was getting pushed into JA’s lap. Sharp had to help him a ton. Might need to let the young guys eat if it’s the better unit. I trust BB to get it right and he is definitely gonna cuss them out during film. But with all that being said there were holes to run through. Which leads to #3

3. The RBs were missing holes man. And I love Sawchuck but you have to know your personnel. There are times he needs to hit the hole but too patient at times. He looked the worse of the backs. Tatum is different and I’m taking #8 and #20 and I’m running a ton of 2 back. Every time they were in a 2 back set we moved the ball at will. I’m doing this especially with banged up WRs. Mix it up between 21 personnel and 22 mainly for running to help this o-line. And 2 of the sacks were due to lack of RB pass pro.

4. Just like JA is fresh, so is the OCs. I think getting JA in rhythm with quick game and rolling him out will help and I expect to see more of that. Pass catchers need to step up outside of Deion and Bauer. Don’t rush Nic back until he is 100%. Let the Zion Bros get work. Nix the designed runs for him. Only time he should run is if he is scrambling or an occasional zone read.

5. LAWD PLEASE DON’T JINX THIS BUT DAMMIT I THINK WE HAVE A KICKER!

Joel Klatt in trying to hype USC he used Texas in the early 2000's and he actually said the college football world ran through Texas for 6 years..

I put a post asking what 6 or 7 was he referring to since he is suggesting it was 6 or 7 season consecutive. .

2000 OU BEAT TEXAS 63-13 Big 12 title
2001 OU BEAT TEXAS 14-3
2002 OU BEAT TEXAS 34-24 Big 12 title
2003 OU BEAT TEXAS 63-13 #1 Lost Big 12 championship game
2004 OU BEAT TEXAS 12-0 Big 12 title
2005 Texas took the title and the Natty.. Ok.. will start here as season 1 of your 6 seasons
2006 Texas went 10-3 Texas won in Dallas. but OU took the Big 12 title,,,,. Did the college football world run through dkr this season? NOPE...
2007 Texas went 10-3 OU BEAT TEXAS and took the Big 12 title.. But did the college football world run through dkr this season? NOPE...
2008 Texas won in Dallas but OU tool the Big 12 title making it 3 straight for OU... But did the college football world run through dkr this season? NOPE...
2009 Texas won in Dallas and took the Big 12 title and lost the BCS title game... If you want to says college football ran though dkr in 2009... I will give you this one... but where in the hell are the 6 seasons you are talking about?
2010 5-7
2011 8-5
2012 9-4
2013 8-5
2014 6-7
2015 5-7
2016 5-7
2017 6-7
2018 10-4 Texas caught a depressed Georgia
2019 8-5
2020 7-3
2021 5-7

So Klatt... are you trying to add 2023 into the 6 season in the mid 2000's where college football ran through Texas? Because I will give you 2005 and 2008 and 2009.. but there is a 3 season gap where OU took the Big 12 title and went 34-6 through the regular season ..

The exaggeration of Texas record will never cease..

Football For Zac Alley, reuniting with Brent Venables feels like 'home'

We finally got to talk to Zac Alley after Friday's game, and he shed some real insight on how it feels to be back with Venables at Oklahoma.

College Football Game Thread

LSU vs USC is an entertaining game. USC’s defense looks greatly improved. Miller Moss could be the real deal. He’s thrown some impressive passes and looks poised in the pocket. LSU’s qb has been very good too. The Tigers appear to be the more compete team, especially more balanced on offense. I’m definitely rooting against USC but they look good enough to hold their own against LSU.
