Time to move forward

The Tennessee disaster is in the past. Time to get up off the floor and get pissed off about how things have developed. Time to start blocking people and making plays on offense. Hawkins is going to have to be a superstar to salvage the teams pride. But if this team gets mad and fights like hell they can stop the bleeding. In the meantime, start the search for a new set of offensive coaches and ball busting recruiters. Time to stop screwing around and living off past Sooner glories.

Football Venables on OL struggles: 'I'm tired of watching the same thing'

The Sooners now rank 101st in rushing offense, 116th in sacks allowed and 114th in tackles for loss allowed.

Against Tennessee, the OL struggled with the same issues they have all season.

Football Pick-Six Tennessee: Six plays that summarized Oklahoma's 25-15 loss to Vols

It's hard to put into words how this past weekend's game has me feeling about the rest of the 2024 season, however, I'll do my best.

With that, here's my new "Pick-Six" series. Enjoy.

Oklahoma Breakdown ( Gabe Ikard analysis of the offense is really damming)

In short
  1. Offensive line- Heath Ozaeta worst player by far on the offensive line, our footwork was horrible to say the least l, no juice, and said that Everett looked like our best offensive lineman by far in warmups and only saw him take 10 warm up reps
  2. Bauer Sharp- is the worst inside split zone blocking TE that he’s ever seen and questioned why we run it so much with him in the lineup and also why tf did we run this concept on the 2 yard line which resulted in the safety
  3. Cursed multiple times and was the most frustrated/angry that I’ve ever seen him, questioned the coaching, the plan, the execution, and everything that the offense did
  4. Why do we not put our small wide receivers in motion instead of letting them get jammed at the line of scrimmage, makes no sense to him
  5. In all honesty most of the offensive play calling and especially the run game made no sense to him
  6. Don’t need to summarize his thoughts on Arnold for obvious reasons he’s not anywhere close to QB1

Arnold vs. Hawkins

I keep seeing this everywhere I turn today saying Hawkins was that much better than Arnold during the offseason. Was there truly that big of a difference between the 2 in the offseason? If so why in the hell are we putting Arnold out there every game. It does not matter anymore about hurting someone's feelings with how much these players are making nowadays, THIS IS OU. Hawkins should have started game one if this is truly the case.

Kaleb Hicks

Why have we seen none of Kalib Hicks ? Barnes is a great pass protector but he struggles making people miss and in the spring game and from reports it seems Hicks has that ability. I assume Hicks sucks at Pass Pro but the whole O-Line is struggling with assignments. At this point I would rather put out young talented guys who need to have reps on the field to see their assignments better. I would not mind seeing a similar aspect on the O-line of telling these older guys if they can’t execute their assignment then they will be benched for a young guy who is learning their assignments. Honestly, after typing that out I think that applies to the whole offense of if you are an older guy and you cannot execute then they should be replaced by a young talented player who needs reps.

Play that Sealed JA’s Trip to the Bench

Was absolutely the “lateral”

There was absolutely a lead up by the final straw was the lateral to Ragins.

Venables stated in the post game presser, and you can clearly see, that OU should be running on said play due to defensive alignment. The pass shouldn’t have even been an option, let alone to be behind the LOS.

One thing that struck me was BV saying MHJr. has the ability to “execute the basics of the offense” which to me says more about JA’s inability to see/identify things than it does about Hawkins Jr’s ability.

I’m going to do a full breakdown but I believe JA’s issue is not talent but his ability to see the field pre and post snap. He has a slowler clock and doesn’t seem to have the visual field to play the game at the highest level.

Im actually not mad...

Tough loss at home. We lost some good players tonight and we're reminded how inept our offensive gameplans have been. However, I think tonight we found ourselves a qb who although not perfect...actually made our offense look like more than a jv offense.

There are actually some really good take aways leaving this game:
1. Our defense is for real. They played their asses off...all game and for 3qrts with basically NO help.
2. We're in the SEC. One loss doesn't mean the end of the season. With an average offense we can be competitive. If BB does his typical "the online improves in October" who knows what may happen
3. Tennessee is a damned good team and with 5mins left we really had a chance to win the game. We were outclassed on the offensive line and their rbs vs ours was pretty bad. Else where we look the part. Even with puppy wrs when they're given a chance. (Well qb was 😬 until 9 came in as well)
4. College football like the NFL is so qb centric now. Tennessee did NOT let up when Hawk came in. Tennessee did NOT play a huge zone and just give him routes. They didn't want to give up their TD and damn sure didn't want to give up two. He did what he did with the same oline, OC, 2nd string wrs and basically Barnes as his only rb...and we looked markedly better. He accounted for our longest play of the year running the exact same play with Pettaway that jfa missed Brenen on early in the game..it proly house calls it if he's hit in stride. Btw...nico also runs the same play for his td pass in the second quarter.

I do fear depending on an 18yr old dual threat qb his first season trying to navigate and just make it thru the SEC. However, for the first time since Hurts left I feel like we have a qb that can win a big game for us. No shade to dg (everyone knows he wasn't my fave) and no one can ever take his UT performance away, but he was limited. Hawk can grow into something...he's gonna take his lumps, but that kid showed major heart in 2qrts of football and Sooner to Sooner...sign me up for THAT

I'll take the L for the sake of finding if we finally have our Que.
3 losses could sneak us into the tournament. We definitely still have a lot to play for with even 2 losses.

Upon the Rewatch: vs Houston Offensive Edition (Super Offensive)

Already had a chance to run this thing back. Watched live and there was some good but also some serious serious bad.

1. Brennen Thompson is not a number one receiver. He’s just not. He is not even in the same ball park as a route runner as Burkes/Anderson/Anthony/Farooq. He is a #3 at best who is gives you a vertical threat. Didn’t think that after spring and was very skeptical of what we were hearing.

2. Barnes is a solid player. However, Tatum is your best back. Seeing it live, his explosiveness is different. His one carry was the best looking thing all night and with an offensive line that struggles in a number of ways, it’s paramount to have a back with good vision, explosive acceleration steps and runs with good balance. Barnes is not going to ever be a tackle breaker because he doesn’t have the balance/core strength to hold up.

3. The offensive line is really bad. 64 needs to get an earful and not see the field after the helmet move. That was absolutely a BONEHEADED move. Howland needs to get slotted at tackle.

4. Woodi is Not putting up good film. Malone, Gentry, Jacobe, Kani are all better. Seeing it live it is even more obvious.

5. Peyton Bowen is missed. Billy Bowman is one of the worst punt fielders I have ever seen at a big time program. Has no sense of timing/feel for the position.
