I suspect boosters are less a problem than LHN. They require a lot of time during the season that is unproductive in producing the next win. It's a monumental aid in recruiting, and Charlie has taken advantage of that. But dang. We heard the Horns had a great recruiting class, before four Baylor last minute defectors joined them. And you don't see much contributions from all these studs.
The big curiosity to me, if burnt orange does win the "Herman Sweepstakes," is how Buechele does in his offense. Herman has built his offense around athletic quarterbacks who can hurt the defense running it. It opens up everything else. Buechele ain't that guy. Texas has been so inconsistent at quarterback since Colt McCoy left, and while Buechele has shown a lot of rookie mistakes, he appeared to be the guy to change that. Will he just be a stand in until Herman gets "his guy?"
One thing I believe. Texas will have a two headed monster at running back next season, if 25 and 33 are both healthy. They'll have a bunch of young talent to play defense. They still have a chance to be scary good, if they coaching gets upgraded. But how long would Herman last if he lost to the equivalent of SMU while wearing a burnt orange coaching shirt?
And I wonder if Herman doesn't end up at LSU anyway. Today might have made that more likely. Every talking head I heard today was really critical of the fourth and goal call on the last play of the Florida game. I thought it was blatant second guessing, but these days, apparently knowing anything about anything is less important than being as bombastic as possible. Orgeron seems like a good fit for Baton Rouge, but my suspicion is that LSU brings in whomever the very best available coaching name might be. After Thursday night, that might be the Houston lame duck.
I still think it's a totally different task to pull off even two top five upsets in a season, than to play in a conference where pretty good, can get you a 6-6 season with only a small amount of bad luck. I'm not sure Herman is all that. But I guess we'll get a chance to see, starting in August 2017 at someplace that has great instate recruiting advantages.
