* At the last minute, Venables had to tell two of his WR commits to take a hike since the portal looks like it has better options.
* did not have the back-up WRs ready to play this year (and perhaps they were over-rated as recruits, which falls on Jones' ability as an evaluator, and see the first point)
* did not develop the back up WRs during the season
* of the two WR commits that stuck in this class, one is an in-state OU fan who would have come no matter what. So put him down for 1 WR commit this cycle.

Somebody please explain Jones value.

The top 5 WRs were out with injury. I'm not exactly sure what you expected. Not to mention the OL didn't provide protection long enough for basically true freshman guys to progress into routes.
It’s surprising that those who want Venables and/or an assistant coach fired seem to ignore your points, bcsooner.

Jones is a very good coach and great recruiter, but he doenst make the decision on what kids to recruit. Lebby liked tall receivers to play on the outside part of his offense was throwing the 50/50 ball which the guys we recruited could do. you can count on both hands how many 50/50 balls were thrown this year. Usually guys that are 6'3 and up are not great route runners. With the help of Jones I believe we land some solid WR out of the portal. Kid from NC State and kid from Tech are two I believe we get.

BV wasn't firing anyone before signing day. Not to say that he won't moving forward, for all we know some of them might have been told to start looking for a new job but no way he was gonna fire any before ink was put to paper.

The same Crimson glasses that had many hyped coming into the season keeps their vision tainted in the same way with the negative.

Don't get me wrong, this season sucked hard, but it can all be summed up from a bad OC hire, replacing all 5 starters on the OL and a historic string of injuries at WR.

We are never going to be devoid of talent but we've reached a critical juncture where the coaching has to be better than the guys on the other sideline because half the teams with play have talent equal too or better.

I don’t think the ink means anything any longer
Probably not but if you fire a Coach or Assistant right before signing day you may not get the ink. This was BV's smallest and lowest ranked class in 3 yrs so my guess is why take a chance by firing anyone before signing day.
He has the whole off season to do that if he wishes but my guess is nobody else is leaving unless they know its coming and find another job at another school.

Really good post (again) bcsooner.
What is seen as a major meltdown of the football program may be restored by the new offensive coordinator, improvement by the current players on the offensive line, the addition of JUCO and/or transfers on the OL, WR and QB Mateer from Washington State and the addition of a good freshman class.
I think Mateer is an instant upgrade at QB and will be vital for Arbuckle’s offense going forward.

The Rivals' "class rankings" are based on total points, and they are skewed by volume over quality. If you look at the "average stars" ranking, OU's 2025 class is 9th nationally at 3.78 stars. This is consistent with OU 2024 at 3.71 stars and OU 2023 at 3.77 stars.

These days, it really doesn't matter. Anyone can leave anytime without losing a year after signing. I suspect that unless our offensive staff guys find a better job, there won't be changes. OUr offensive staff isn't as bad as people are led to believe. Everybody has injuries. But nobody has injuries like our offense had this season.
