Which is the bigger 2019 addition: Jalen Hurts or Alex Grinch?

What is best for OU football in 2019...Alex Grinch.

Why

It’s highly likely that Alex Grinch helps significantly improve OU’s defense .. on the field of play and to a degree with new recruits. This takes would take pressure off the OU offense.

It’s not even a given that Hurts beats out Tanner Mordecai for the starting job. Mordecai is very underrated IMO by the local media and fans.

Sorry but I have to disagree on Jalen not being a given to start over Mordecai. He would have and could have gone anywhere to play and been told he would be the Starter if he would come there. I just don't think he would have come to OU or went anywhere else had he not been told he would BE the starter, why transfer to sit on the bench? If not for Tua he would have been the starter at Bama last season and would likely be this season as well if Tua was not there.
Having said that I am sure Riley knows what Mordecai can and cannot do, if he is underrated why even go after Hurts in the first place?
All I am saying is I am not buying them not knowing who the starter will be like last season. There is no way Murray was not ever going to be the starter last season. Being promised a starting job and keeping it is two different things, players can always be benched or not start the next game or games depending on their performance. I could be wrong, has happened many times so its only my humble opinion.

Don't you think we should pump the brakes just a little on Grinch? I mean we all thought Mike Stoops coming back would be great and look what happened. I'm optimistic but I'm not jumping on the Grinch train quite yet. He is gonna have to prove it to me first

Maybe not. Maybe he's really confident in his abilities and coaching to this point that he knows he can upstage any competition without necessitating a promise from a coach.

And if he's going to ride a bench, I think it does make sense for him to ride the bench of an offense that is getting picked over with a fine tooth comb by NFL teams. I would guess that the OU offense is better preparation for the next level than the Alabama offense is - or it's at least on par and therefore gives more diversity to his knowledgebase.

As always, I support all of the coaches until they prove they are not worthy. Stoops did. Grinch hasn't. When/if he does not deliver then I'll fuss & disCuss. Until then Go Grinch go!

No need to tamp down on the very good prospects of improvement on what was some of the worst OU defense in history!

Grinch is demanding effort...Mike Stoops did not.... that alone helps... but along with recent improved defensive recruiting ...including much improved young DL depth that should help improve OU’s defense. We can reasonably expect year over year defense improvement for the next few seasons

OU players can often recognize a player’s abilities and are often the first to says something.

About a year ago Mordecai was compared to Baker Mayfield by OU football players. Yesterday while on the radio OU football color man on the OU radio broadcast Teddy Lehman reported that he had heard Mordecai was looking very good. He when on to say that this is not to mean that he would start over Hurts. Other normally reliable sources are also indicating that Mordecai is looking very good.

I’m not saying Mordecai will be the starter but it’s not a slam dunk that Hurts wins the job either.
There are reasons why Hurts was beat out at Alabama. Hurts will be pushed to work very hard at OU.
This is a good situation for OU.

If Mordecai starts over Hurts, a battle-tested, championship caliber performer, OU's QB situation will be out of this world. Of he doesn't beat out Hurts, it could still be out of this world.
