Wheaton scheduled to commit December 23rd.....

Guy's been recruited for a couple of years now, at least. Not a fan of stringing people along, waiting until the last minute, etc..
From what little film I've seen of him, I'm surprised he's ranked in the top 10 on Rivals. He isn't ranked nearly that high on the ESPN 300, where he's a 4 star. He's fast enough, for sure, but I haven't seen him break many tackles. I'd like to see him at OU, but I won't lose any sleep if he goes elsewhere. If his decision is based upon who's hurt, who's coming back, who's leaving early and whatnot, then it sounds to me like he's afraid to compete for a job. A real stud doesn't worry about that kind of stuff; he's going to walk into the locker room like Larry Bird and remind the rest of them that they're vying for 2nd place.

Sure is a lot of speculation on this board about the kid.
“He appears to be a head case”. Possibly “afraid to compete for a job”.

Or maybe he is just an 18 year old who is having a hard time choosing between two great opportunities?

Never looked at it that way. You might be on to something there.

I don't think he's afraid of competition. It's an odd deal for sure. There is no mention of any adult in the picture. No mom, dad, uncle, Coach, etc. Definitely little contact w/ DeMarco in the last couple of weeks. Someone has to be assisitng, guiding him, and whoever the adult is in the room, needs to shit or get off the pot, Fish or cut bait. This will force him to decide. He may not decide what the adult wants but decisions are made. There is gong to be a moment in time where OU and/or Bama is going to hit a date on the calendar and just walk away. I'm not sure either school is there just yet.

he ran 4.8. Matt Clapp smoked him

he was classic big fish in small pond in HS. Played wildcat QB

I think he could’ve been a good short yardage specialist here though

Yeah I will defer to the schools that recruited him and the reported 40 times. The coaches at OU ain't recruiting a 4.8 rb...IMO.

I can’t see OU ever recruiting a back or other skill position player with 4.8 40 speed.
they didn’t know

I think the current staff is much more on top of speed. They want proof

when pandemic hit, I know they made Kendall Daniels video some 40s for them and probably part of the reason they didn’t recruit him to play DB

they nearly recruited 2 in the same class. Justin J wasn’t much faster

he quit right away tho

That doesn't explain away other top tier schools and the reported times. Both rb's were highly recruited...and that don't happen with 4.8

Rick DeBerry was recruited by everybody and he ran 5.0

Scouting speed off of film can prove difficult

Like I said, I will defer to the top tier colleges which recruited these players. DeBerry had multiple offers including Alabama. If your point is there are misses or false narratives related to recruited players, I agree. However it is not like OU is missing on an offer for 5 star rb running a 4.8.

Saban must have really done a sales pitch like he did McClellan. Strange that we get WR by the bushel, but some back to barn with nothing on RB. The good thing at least he told the shorthorns to shove it early on.

Hard to believe a back with 4.8 speed could average 8 yards a carry his senior year in high school.
Even harder to believe that OU somehow "didn't know" Calhoun ran a 4.8 as a running back. I doubt if any coaching staff would let that slip through the cracks.
If he was a 4.8 runner....and OU knew it....fine. It would explain in part why he could not compete with the likes of Murray, Brown, Finch, Madu, etc. before he was injured.

My profound apologies...there was a fake post on Bleacher Report as well as follow up on TideFans. The BR post got taken down. I must say, this is eerily similar to the Jase McClellan situation. Thank God Brooks is coming back.

OU has come in second for too many highly regarded recruits recently. Foster, Egbuka, Wheaton.
Need to start winning some of these battles. Hopefully Leigh brings us some good news.

When Gundy moved out of the RB Coach, recruiting went to sh!t. He was by far the best RB recruiter in the country at the time.

OU still has a top 10 class for 2021.
There should be more coming.
I wonder if Riley can flip L.J. Johnson from Cypress, Texas. He's said to be a Texas lean.

Must have been that his 5 Star status meant the world to recruiting ranking peace of mind.

Well, it sure meant a lot to Alabama.
Alabama can do no wrong...but before long the hot recruits will grow tired of being a number in the system. Stock piling does no good unless there is the intent to use them. McClellan and Robinson surely stand in front of him...as does Sanders when he gets healthy. So boom he is third or fourth team.
