So if the Longhorns missed on Gilbert because of a miscommunication about contract details, there's nothing to call that other than ridiculously incompetent and stupid.

When Cumbie turned down the position, it was understandable -- he has a good thing

****

From Nahlin at Inside Texas:

I'm in a bad spot to write but maybe now you're picking up what I've been putting down.

Texas would prefer the illusion of support rather than actually supporting Strong. The BOR is dragging its feet with Gilbert like with Cumbie. Whoever leaked the terms for Cumbie (and it wasn't Strong's camp) are gumming up negotiations with other candidates.

Basically, because the political cost of firing Strong was too great we're left with something that looks like this, something worse.

I'm in a bad place to write right now. The plan was to get with JS and write everything we know on Monday but that won't suffice. I'll talk to him in a few and he'll get something posted.

If you're blaming this on Strong you are incredibly disingenuous.

Remember how I said a parting of ways was best? That's because Strong is bad for Texas and Texas is definitely bad for Strong. I knew it would be bad but not THIS bad.

What an absolute embarrassment. The best course now, imo, is to probably part ways with Strong and shame the people who f***ed this last week up.

You smell that K2C?

It's a real stench wafting out of the west all the way to Coweta here.

That entourage must be in town...

I actually like Charlie Strong. I see what he did with Louisville when former Tulsa coach, Steve Kragthorpe left that program in shambles.

That being said, I don't pull for any Texas head coach. I'll wait to pull for him until Strong takes over a team like UCF after next year. I bet he would succeed and the horns would have explody heads....HA!

Oh, me too...I have nothing against him, sorry he's not doing better actually.
However, I think he's got a little John Blake thing going that he might be out of his depth at that level.
Louisville good, Horns, bad.
It happens.

It's called the 'Peter Principle'.

Reading the horn board and it looks like the got their man......Q-B coach from Tulsa...He didn't call plays, but I think he did at Bowling Green......

Sterlin Gilbert...........

I hope they got the deal closed. If they don't, they might as well promote from within since everyone would be wary of them. While it is fun to watch the drama with the Horns, at the end of the day we want them to work it out. We want the conference to be strong and a competitive Texas team helps to achieve that goal.

They should go after Knight too. He's a lot better than any QB they have on the books. What a fiasco. I wish them ill from every fiber of my being...but there is no where to go up from here. To say they suck is an insult to prostitutes.

Maybe. And he might be a little more like Eddie Sutton in hoops.. Eddie was a terrific basketball coach. Some say the grape got him when he took one of the elite college basketball jobs and caused his failure at Kentucky. More likely, it was the job and the pressure. He took Arkansas to final fours. He took like five programs to the NCAA tournament. He was a very solid coach most of his time at OSU.

Charlie can coach. He had a very good recruiting class a year ago, and might again this year. But he is one of those defensive guys who needs a really take charge, can do OC that he can trust with that side to, so he can keep his fingers on the defensive side. That just hasn't happened.

Some of it is on him, like with the charade of hiring Wickline to be the "OC" in name only, when he really had somebody else doing the job. The politics of anybody being a football head coach at UT are challenging enough. Being a black man with the closeted red necks in power in Austin has a couple of difficultly layers added.

Or maybe Charlie just caught lightning in bottle with Bridgewater because of his deep Florida recruiting ties, and Teddy made him look like a great head coach, when he's really only a really quality DC.

Having great recruiting connections in Florida would help a coach in just about any HC job in America, except for the University of Texas, where your classes are just expected to be Texas unanimous or close to it for a lot of reasons. It's likely just a really bad fit.

Breaks my heart.
